Oxidative changes in human lens proteins during senile nuclear cataract formation.

1. Proteins from the cortex and nucleus of the human lens were studied to determine if any changes could be detected in their amino acids during senile cataract formation. 2. Senile nuclear cataract formation was found to be accompanied by a progressive oxidation of cysteine and methionine. The oxidation of methionine and changes in the distribution of the nuclear proteins did not appear to start until about 60% of the cysteine had been oxidized. 3. In the advanced nuclear cataractous lens, about 90% of the cysteine has been oxidized and 45% of the methionine is present as the sulphoxide in th

Senile cataract extraction and diabetes.

A study of hospital discharge diagnoses from both national data and data from a local medical centre indicates that diabetes substantially increases the probability of cataract extraction at age 40-49, about doubles or triples the probability for age 50-69, and has little effect on risk at age 70 and over. Strengths and weaknesses of the data are discussed. Other reports, generally estimating a much stronger association between diabetes and probability of cataract extraction, at least at age 50 and above, are critically evaluated.

[Visual properties of unilateral aphakics corrected with spectacles (author's transl)].

A study of visual habits consisting of a questionaire and an examination was carried out on 70 unilaterally aphakic patients. These patients wore correcting glasses and had better vision in the cataract operated eye. It was observed that the patients, aided by senile convergence weakness on one side and senile divergence weakness on the other, were able to develop a form of monocular vision without complications and in particular without double vision. These patients who wore glasses developed a type of "multiple choice" vision, which was dependent on the intelligence and the determination of

Aging and senile cataracts: an integrated theory. Dedicated to professor Dr. F Hollwich on his 65th birthday.

Earlier theories of cataract formation have been unsatisfactory and incomplete because they usually assigned a single causative factor to the lenticular changes of cataract. The older theories tended to restrict themselves to consideration of the lens itself, and so were necessarily limited in their premises. The recent rise of interdisciplinary study in medicine has demonstrated the need for a more fundamental and yet broader search for explanations to the disease process. Aging itself is a case in point, and it gives ophthalmologists the framework for an integrated and comprehensive theory o

[Monitoring the progress of lens opacities in cases of senile cataract by retro-illumination photography (author's transl)].

A follow-up study of lens opacities, utilizing retro-illumination photography with the fundus camera is described. After giving technical details, results are discussed and possible errors pointed out. If evaluation by planimetry or other devices is not possible, a useful procedure is the evaluation of simultaneous projected slides by a group of ophthalmologists not directly involved in the trial. This is demonstrated by testing the effect of 1-hydroxy-pyrido-(3,2alpha)-5-phenoxazone-3-carboxylic acid on the progress of senile cataract in a total of 48 eyes. Together with slit image photograph

Eye lens color: formation and function.

Aromatic amino acids are photooxidized by near-ultraviolet light to colored products that are bound very tightly to protein amino groups. The resulting colored proteins absorb near-ultraviolet light more strongly and are rendered more hydrophobic than the untreated compounds, and they fluoresce at 440 nanometers when excited at 360 nanometers. Coloration in the lenses of diurnally active animals (including man) may be caused by this reaction, and senile cataracts may result. Such changes in many other proteins (as in the skin and retina) could lead to more serious consequences.

The Abiotrophies of the Retina and Choroid: (Section of Ophthalmology).

(1) Hereditary lesions fall into three groups:-(a) Malformations: Present at birth.(b) Abiotrophies: At birth the tissue is fully differentiated but it undergoes degenerative changes at some period in post-natal life.(c) Phakomatoses: A group possessing features of the two previous groups and some features of neoplasms.(2) The conception of abiotrophy draws attention to a large group of affections which have a hereditary character and develop in apparently normal tissues, making their appearance in different families at different periods of life. The conception is well established in neurology
