Aqueous humor and serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels in patients with cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 (OH) D) levels are associated with various pathologic ocular conditions. Few studies have assessed 25 (OH) D concentrations in non-serum specimens, and none to date has assessed 25 (OH) D concentrations in human aqueous humor and their association with ocular diseases. This study investigated the possible correlations between 25 (OH) D concentrations in aqueous humor and serum and whether vitamin D concentrations in aqueous humor were associated with cataract. METHODS: This study prospectively enrolled 136 patients, including 87 with senile cataract a

Molecular signature for senile and complicated cataracts derived from analysis of sumoylation enzymes and their substrates in human cataract lenses.

Sumoylation is one of the key regulatory mechanisms in eukaryotes. Our previous studies reveal that sumoylation plays indispensable roles during lens differentiation (Yan et al. 2010. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 107:21034-21039; Gong et al. 2014. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 111:5574-5579). Whether sumoylation is implicated in cataractogenesis, a disease largely derived from aging, remains elusive. In the present study, we have examined the changing patterns of the sumoylation ligases and de-sumoylation enzymes (SENPs) and their substrates including Pax6 and other proteins in cataractous lenses of diff

Proteomic analysis of aqueous humor from cataract patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

A postcataract surgery complication in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is lens capsular contraction. To identify potential proteins contributing to this phenomenon, high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis was conducted with aqueous humor samples collected from 11 patients who underwent cataract surgeries, with four patients diagnosed as RP and cataract (RP group) and the other seven with only senile cataract group. The upregulated proteins in the RP group were enriched in wound response, while downregulated proteins were enriched in cell adhesi

Evaluation of Nd:YAG Laser Capsulotomy Rates in a Real-Life Population.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the rate of posterior capsule opacification (PCO), under "real-life" conditions, as measured by rates of Nd:YAG laser intervention, rather than from a controlled study from which patients with conditions predisposing to PCO have been excluded. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This was a retrospective, multicenter study in an unselected consecutive cohort of patients undergoing surgery for senile cataract. Patients aged 18 years and older, previously implanted with the CT LUCIA 611P IOL, were contacted at 12, 18 and 24 months to ascertain if they had r

Hepatic encephalopathy increases the risk of hip fracture: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic hip fracture is a common general health problem with a significant impact on human life because it debilitates the patients and largely decreases their quality of life. Early prevention of fractures has become essential in recent decades. This can be achieved by evaluating the related risk factors, as a reference for further intervention. This is especially useful for the vulnerable patient group with comorbidities. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a major complication of liver cirrhosis, may increase the rate of falls and weaken the bone. This study evaluated the correlat

Aqueous cytokine levels in four common uveitis entities.

To investigate aqueous cytokine profiles in acute anterior uveitis (AAU), Fuchs' syndrome, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and Behcet's disease (BD), we assayed the concentrations of 17 cytokines by multiplex immunoassay in aqueous humor (AqH) collected during cataract surgery from 24 AAU, 29 Fuchs' syndrome, 29 VKH disease, 30 BD and 30 senile cataract control patients. Aqueous cytokine levels were compared between the five groups and analysed by logistic regression. Cytokine levels were then compared between uveitis patients who underwent cataract surgery within 3 months and those who und

Effects of Sodium Selenite on Oxidative Damage in the Liver, Kidney and Brain in a Selenite Cataract Rat Model.

Selenite cataracts are effective and convenient animal models for simulation of human senile nuclear cataracts. These models are widely used to study the effects of various stresses on eye lenses and to screen anticataract drugs. However, there have been no comprehensive toxicological evaluations of these animal models. To investigate the effects of sodium selenite on some important organs in selenite cataract model animals, this study analyzed (1) histopathology by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining; (2) methionine sulfoxide reductase (Msr) A and B1 protein expression; (3) glutathione perox
