BACKGROUND/AIMS: Observations in central India, over a period of more than a decade, suggested that the frequency of sight restoring cataract surgery was substantially higher in women of childbearing age compared to men of the same age. Formal surveys in the subcontinent of India have confirmed a higher prevalence of cataract in women. The present study was conducted to explore possible effects of childbearing and associated adverse factors on cataract risk.

We report in vitro measurements of effective diffusion tensors characterising the anisotropic transport of water in human eye lenses ranging in age from 13 to 86 years. The proteins of the eye lens, which do not turn over throughout life, undergo many modifications, some of which lead to senile cataract. We describe a modification, S-methylation of cysteine, that may serve to protect the lens from detrimental modifications. PURPOSE: In keratoconus corneas, it has been shown that levels of degradative enzymes and transcription factor Sp1 are elevated and those of inhibitors are reduced, especially in the epithelial layer. This study is to determine whether the biochemical abnormalities identified in corneas also exist in conjunctival tissues.
METHODS: Conjunctival tissues were collected from normal subjects and from patients with keratoconus, senile cataract, and other corneal diseases. Immunohistochemical staining for cathepsins B and G, alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor, alpha 2-macro-globulin and Sp1 was performed.
