Simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (SOMET) for bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency in a patient of failed simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report the successful outcome of cataract surgery following simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (SOMET) in a patient with drug-induced cicatrizing conjunctivitis (DICC) and failed simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET). While SOMET has previously been described in Stevens-Johnson syndrome, its utility in cases of failed SLET or DICC has not been reported. Additionally, the long-term outcomes of SOMET and subsequent cataract surgery post SOMET have also not been described previously. CASE PRESENTATION: A male in his thirties presented with bilateral limbal

Unilateral 'cheetah-like' endotheliopathy: A rare endothelial phenotype regressing after phacoemulsification.

PURPOSE: To report an exceptional case of unilateral endothelial corneal disease with unique specular microscopy findings and a regressive course following cataract surgery. METHODS: We present a 60-year-old patient with a unilateral corneal anomaly discovered during a routine slit-lamp examination. Specular microscopy, retro-illumination (innovative prototype) were used for imaging. Endothelial cell density (ECD) was assessed, and genetic testing for TCF4 gene mutations was performed. During the follow-up, the patient underwent phacoemulsification for cataract surgery. RESULTS: Retroillumin

Ringless Premium Intraocular Lenses - a Narrative Review of Technological Advances.

The standard method for achieving presbyopia correction after cataract extraction has traditionally centered on intraocular lens (IOL) optics featuring concentric diffractive patterns or combinations of diffractive and refractive elements, or "rings". While there has been a transition from simple monofocality to intricate polyfocality in IOLs, this has been accompanied by associated side effects. Halos, glare, reduced contrast sensitivity, waxy vision, low reading speed, reduced depth of focus and difficulty in night vision and driving are important photic phenomena that IOL developers have at

Association of ophthalmic disease and physical activity in All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND: The association between physical activity (PA) and ophthalmic disease remains uncertain, as most studies relied on self-report. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between long-term, objectively measured PA by wearable devices (Fitbit) and the incidence and prevalence of common ophthalmic diseases in the All of Us Research Program. METHODS: We conducted cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of 14,757 adults with electronic health record (EHR) and Fitbit data. Participants had at least 6 months of valid Fitbit wear (≥10 h/day and ≥100 steps/day). The cohort had a mean

[Research progress of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy].

Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy is an inherited corneal endothelial disease that primarily affects middle-aged and elderly individuals. Due to the absence of obvious clinical symptoms in its early stages, it is often missed in diagnosis. If such patients are not properly diagnosed prior to cataract or other intraocular surgeries, postoperative corneal edema can easily lead to medical disputes. Therefore, early diagnosis and grading are crucial for clarifying patients' corneal status, reducing the risks of intraocular surgeries, and improving prognosis through early intervention. With advan

Ripple-Like Descemet Membrane Folds Following Combined Microhook Ab Interno Trabeculotomy and Cataract Surgery: A Case Report.

We report a case of distinctive ripple-like Descemet membrane folds after combined microhook ab interno trabeculotomy (µLOT) and cataract surgery. A 70-year-old Japanese man with primary open-angle glaucoma and cataract underwent nasal µLOT followed by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the right eye. At 1 week postoperatively, unusual ripple-like Descemet membrane folds, which had not been noted at the examination on postoperative day 1, were observed in the inferior cornea with localized corneal edema. Best-corrected visual acuity was 0.4 in decimal notation. Multimodal

The genetic landscape of myotonic dystrophy type 1: insights from nearly one million genomes.

Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystem disorder caused by CTG repeat expansions in the dystrophia myotonica protein kinase (DMPK) gene. Current prevalence estimates of 1 in 3,000-8,000 have traditionally relied on clinically ascertained and geographically restricted cohorts, underestimating population burden and failing to capture ancestry diversity. Using large-scale whole-genome sequencing (WGS) datasets, we aimed to identify DMPK repeat expansions across nearly one million participants, define their ancestry-specific distribution, and evaluate associated clinical phenotypes, with

[The importance of addressing issues related to bilateral cataract surgery].

Age-related cataract, the primary cause of blindness among middle-aged and elderly populations, represents a clinical condition where the bilateral surgical strategy cannot be simplified to the superposition of two independent operations, but constitutes a systematic project targeting the reconstruction of binocular visual function. With the increasing diversity of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses, clinical decision-making for bilateral cataract surgery has encountered new challenges: how to formulate a reasonable bilateral cataract surgical protocol? This paper reviews the clinical tr

Staged Bilateral Total Elbow Arthroplasty in Advanced Rheumatoid Elbow Disease: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) remains a valuable surgical option for end-stage rheumatoid elbow disease, particularly in elderly, low-demand patients with painful joint destruction and functional loss. Bilateral elbow involvement can severely compromise self-care and independence, and staged bilateral TEA requires careful patient selection and realistic counseling. CASE REPORT: We report a 79-year-old female with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and glaucoma, with a relevant surgical history that included right total hip arthroplasty, bilateral total knee arthr

Letter to the Editor: Comment on Yu X, et al's "Conjunctival Atypical Lymphoid Hyperplasia Associated with Cytomegalovirus Infection: A Case Report".

We comment on the report of bilateral conjunctival atypical lymphoid hyperplasia with cytomegalovirus (CMV) positivity by Yu et al. While the case is clinically valuable, we believe that the available findings do not establish active CMV infection or a causal relationship with lymphoid hyperplasia. We discuss the lack of tissue CMV PCR, discordant immunoglobulin heavy-chain clonality between eyes, diagnostic overlap with ocular adnexal lymphoma, and the need to consider lacrimal gland involvement and IgG4-related disease. We encourage cautious interpretation and longer clinicopathological foll

Chitosan-Coated Quercetin Nanoemulsion Eye Drops for Sustained Ocular Delivery and Protection of Lens Degeneration from Oxidative Stress.

Quercetin is one of potent antioxidant. Its clinical utility is limited because of its poor solubility and bioavailability. Since oxidative stress is a cause of cataract formation, this study thus developed quercetin-loaded nanoemulsion (QNE) eye drops and further improved their efficacy by preparing in a form of chitosan-coated QNE (CS-QNE). It was found that CS enlarged the droplet size of QNE to 184.33 ± 0.71 nm and shifted the ζ-potential from negative to positive values. CS-QNE had entrapment efficiency of 99.99% with a pH of 6.0 ± 0.0, and shear-thinning behavior. Drug release study demo

Dexamethasone versus triamcinolone acetonide for the management of postoperative inflammation following cataract surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cataract remains the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide, particularly in low-resource settings. Effective control of postoperative inflammation is essential to prevent complications such as cystoid macular edema and raised intraocular pressure. Dexamethasone and Triamcinolone acetonide (TCA) are widely used corticosteroids; however, their comparative efficacy remains uncertain. This updated systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare their effectiveness following cataract surgery. METHODS: A systematic search of 4 databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane C

Performance evaluation of mainstream large language models in cataract science popularization Q&A: a comparative study of readability, quality, and educational suitability.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is one of the main causes of visual impairment and reversible blindness worldwide, and it mainly affects the elderly population. Clinically accurate and sufficiently readable patient education materials play a crucial role in this regard. With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), patients are increasingly obtaining health information generated by artificial intelligence (AI); however, the reliability of online medical information is often questionable. This study systematically evaluated the readability, quality, and educational suitability of mainstream
