BACKGROUND: Ocular complaints, including acute or subacute vision loss, are commonly encountered in emergency departments (ED). These potentially time-sensitive complaints are difficult to diagnose and evaluate without adequate, specialized equipment and expertise. Additionally, a thorough evaluation often requires a more extensive and specialized physical exam, imaging, and ophthalmologic consultation, all of which may not be readily available in the acute setting.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presented a patient in the emergency department with the chief complaint of vision loss. Poi

A woman in her 50s presented with suspected open globe injury (OGI) of the right eye after being hit with a high velocity piece of plastic. Visual acuity at the time of presentation was counting fingers in the affected eye. Slit lamp examination revealed a full thickness laceration of the cornea and a traumatic cataract. Primary corneal repair was performed and the patient was left aphakic after cataract removal. Secondary intraocular lens placement was deferred for 2 years, after which time a scleral-fixated intraocular lens was implanted using the Yamane technique. Postoperative visual acuit

PURPOSE: To describe neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment of visual axis opacification and secondary membranes in pediatric patients with cataracts under intranasal dexmedetomidine sedation.
METHODS: Twenty eyes of 17 patients with secondary membrane formation after cataract extraction were enrolled in this study. Intranasal dexmedetomidine sedation (3 ug/kg) was administered, and Nd:YAG laser (Ellex Super Q, Adelaide, Australia) procedures were performed with children in the sitting position with their chin supported on a laser delivery slit lamp. Preoperative and

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of anterior vitreous detachment (AVD) in routine bag-in-the-lens (BIL) cataract cases and possibly to identify risk factors for its presence.
SETTING: University Hospital of Antwerp, Belgium.
DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Patients having routine BIL cataract surgery were included. Patients with traumatic cataract, previous intraocular surgeries, YAG laser treatment, intravitreal injection, or medical conditions that might affect normal ophthalmologic anatomy were excluded. Several parameters were collected from the patients' records

PURPOSE: To present two cases of full-thickness corneal lacerations following crab claw injuries.
OBSERVATIONS: The first case is a 61-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) with right-eye discharge, pain, and vision loss. Prior to presentation, the patient was with his friends on a fishing trip when one of them caught a crab and threw it to the patient, striking him in the right eye. The crab claw caused a penetrating injury to the cornea, with the patient presenting with a 9.5 mm full-thickness corneal laceration. He underwent emergent corneal laceration repair.Six mon

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prognostic factors and features of post-traumatic endophthalmitis.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled adult patients (>18 years old) diagnosed with post-traumatic endophthalmitis. Their medical records were reviewed and the patient demographic characteristics, features of injury, management, outcomes and microbiology data were analysed.
RESULTS: A total of 131 eyes from 131 patients were enrolled. Post-traumatic endophthalmitis was more common in male patients (122 of 131 patients: 93.1%), in those aged 30-44 years (51 of 131 patients: 38.9%), in those injur

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical outcome and safety profile of a new sutureless scleral fixation (SSF) technique using a single-piece foldable acrylic Carlevale intraocular lens.
METHODS: In this case study, 27 eyes of 27 patients were implanted with an SSF single-piece IOL because of inadequate or absent capsular support. The hand-shake technique used during surgery was combined with the creation of scleral pockets in order to secure the IOL haptics. The BCVA was evaluated in the 1st and 6th month in every patient and in the 12th and 24th months, when possible. Also, we evaluated the improv

PURPOSE: Open globe injury (OGI) is a serious form of ocular trauma that can significantly lower quality of life post-injury due to comorbidities. This study was designed to investigate how traumatic cataracts and other pre-operative variables affect visual outcomes of OGIs.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted for OGI patient records with presence of traumatic cataracts, visual outcomes, comorbidity data and provider training. Multivariable logistic regression analysis determined if several pre-operative variables including traumatic cataracts, retinal detachment and hyphema were pr

A 36-year-old man was referred to our clinic because of traumatic cataract in his right eye, which had developed after being hit in the eye with a badminton shuttle as a child. He noticed that his vision in his right eye was gradually becoming worse. His refraction, corrected with spectacles, was -4.25 -2.00 × 115 in his right eye and -5.50 -1.50 × 57 in his left eye, with a corrected distance visual acuity of 20/32 and 20/20, respectively. Because of allergies, the patient never tolerated contact lens wear for more than 2 hours. On a slitlamp examination, we confirmed anterior subcapsular sta

BACKGROUND: Iris root is the thinnest and weakest portion of the iris stroma. It can detach easily due to blunt trauma or accidental engagement of the iris during intraocular surgery resulting in glare, photophobia and monocular diplopia. Multiple techniques described for iridodialysis repair such as hang back technique, stroke and dock technique and sewing machine technique are technically challenging.
PURPOSE: To describe an simplified approach of iridodialysis repair using 9-0 prolene suture.
SYNOPSIS: We demonstrate the technique of iridodialysis repair using animation for better underst

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to describe the characteristics of open globe injury (OGI) and the relationship between the complications and visual outcomes in children with this type of injury.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of 1,664 children, under the age of 16 years, who were hospitalized for OGI between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2015. Each patient's age, sex, cause and agent of injury, complications, visual acuity, and classification of ocular trauma were collected for review and analysis.
RESULTS: The mean age was 5.6 ± 3.4 years. Right eyes were particu

PURPOSE: To describe a case of a penetrating ocular trauma and plastic intraocular foreign body (IOFB), undetected on preoperative imaging.
OBSERVATIONS: We present the findings of a 40-year-old male who sustained an open globe injury and IOFB composed of plastic following crossbow-related trauma. Preoperative detection of the IOFB was unsuccessful on clinical exam, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography. During extraction of the traumatic cataract, an intralenticular IOFB was discovered and removed through an enlarged limbal incision. Postoperative review revealed that a fragmented pla

BACKGROUND: To report a rare case of fungal keratitis and endophthalmitis due to Coniochaeta hoffmannii.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 71-year-old immunocompetent male sustained a corneal laceration, traumatic cataract, and retinal detachment due to penetrating injury from a nail pulled from a wooden deck. The patient's postoperative course was complicated by infectious keratitis. Fungal cultures, DNA sequencing and analysis of the internal transcribed spacer sequence confirmed Coniochaeta hoffmannii. Topical and oral voriconazole treatments were initiated; however, due to impending perfo

BACKGROUND: Paediatric traumatic cataracts are an important but preventable cause of acquired blindness. Understanding the epidemiology of paediatric traumatic cataracts is a prerequisite for prevention. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile of paediatric traumatic cataracts in southwest China.
METHODS: The medical records of children (age range, 0-14 years old) who developed traumatic cataracts following open-globe injuries and were hospitalized at the Department of Ophthalmology at West China Hospital, between January 2011 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyz
