Light- and drug-induced pupillary dynamics in eyes with a retropupillary iris-claw intraocular lens.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the pupillary characteristics and response to light and drugs in eyes with posterior chamber (PC) placement of iris-claw intraocular lens (IC-IOL). METHODS: In this cross-sectional, comparative study, we included adults with an IC-IOL implanted in the PC of a single eye. We excluded patients with ocular trauma, postoperative IC-IOL displacement or complications, and extended iris atrophy. We used anterior segment optical coherence tomography to perform light-controlled pupillography, measure the pupil diameter (PD), and estimated the pupil circularity under mesopic condi

Sympathetic ophthalmia in an 85-year-old female and a 90-year-old male after a non-complicated cataract surgery: a case report.

Here, two cases involving the oldest reported patients with sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) after non-complicated cataract surgery, are reported. The first case was an 85-year-old female with bilateral decreased vision and headache. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.8 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye at the initial visit. Pseudophakia and choroidal detachments were observed in both eyes, and retinal pigment epithelium undulation was observed by optical coherence tomography. The second case was a 90-year-old male with bilateral optic disc oedema. The BCVA was 0.09 in the right e

Immunohistochemical Findings in Retrocorneal Membranes of Eyes with Corneal Decompensation after Complicated Intraocular Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Retrocorneal membranes (RCMs) may result from epithelial ingrowth, stromal keratocytic downgrowth, fibrous metaplasia of the corneal endothelium, or a combination of these processes. In an institutional case series, the clinical history, ocular findings, and immunohistochemical staining results of RCMs were analysed in patients with unilateral corneal decompensation after complicated intraocular surgery. METHODS AND PATIENTS: Between January 2021 and September 2022, six retrocorneal membranes were excised during Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and D

Acute-Onset Postoperative Herpetic Endophthalmitis: A Case Report.

Herpes simplex virus uveitis without corneal reactivation is more frequent than previously thought. Although herpes simplex virus has been implicated as a cause of postoperative uveitis and endophthalmitis, it has not been reported as a cause of acute postoperative endophthalmitis within the early postoperative period, specifically within one week following cataract extraction. A 55-year-old man with vascularized irregular central disc-shaped stromal corneal opacity with complicated cataracts underwent cataract surgery. Intraoperatively, there was posterior capsular rent, requiring anterior vi

A wandering Ozurdex in the anterior chamber.

Dexamethasone intravitreal implantation (Ozurdex®, Allergan Inc. Irvine, CA, USA) has been used in the treatment of persistent macular edema (ME) due to various vitreoretinal diseases. We described a case of Ozurdex® migration into the anterior chamber. This patient had diabetes mellitus for years and received pars plana vitrectomy due to retinal detachment and anterior chamber intraocular lens implantation due to complicated cataract surgery. We managed this case with surgical intervention without delay and achieved a good effect on complicated corneal edema and previous ME.

Safety and Efficacy of Prostaglandin Analogues in the Immediate Postoperative Period after Uneventful Phacoemulsification.

Prostaglandin analogues (PGAs) have been associated with the development of pseudophakic macular edema (PME) in complicated cataract cases, but evidence on their effects in uncomplicated phacoemulsification remains controversial. This two-arm, prospective, randomised study included patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension under PGA monotherapy who were scheduled for cataract surgery. The first group continued PGA use (PGA-on), while the second discontinued PGAs for the first postoperative month and reinitiated use afterwards (PGA-off). Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs

Peering into the eye: A comprehensive look at ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and its diagnostic value in anterior segment disorders.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is a noninvasive imaging modality that enables in-vivo visualization of the structures of the anterior segment of the eye. Unlike routine ophthalmic diagnostic ultrasound which uses frequencies of 5-10 MHz, UBM utilizes ultrasound frequencies in the range of 50-100 MHz. The high-frequency probes in UBM allows for higher resolution and better visualization of subsurface ocular structures, even in the presence of anatomic or pathological obscuration. UBM has qualitative as well as quantitative applications in various disorders affecting the anterior seg
