Intraocular Lens Opacification in a Patient With Gyrate Atrophy With a Subluxated Intraocular Lens.

BACKGROUND Gyrate atrophy is a rare metabolic disease that profoundly impacts the choroid and retina. This condition is recognized for its ocular comorbidities, including a predisposition to the development of posterior subcapsular cataract and compromised zonular integrity, both of which ultimately necessitate surgical management. While cataract surgery is a common intervention, it can have long-term sequelae. Intraocular lens (IOL) opacity is a known complication, with various morphological patterns documented in the ophthalmic literature. However, no specific pattern of IOL opacification ha

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether perioperative topical prostaglandin analog (PGA) use alters the risk of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME) following routine cataract surgery. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Patients undergoing cataract surgery, without pre-existing high-risk factors for PCME (such as prior cystoid macular edema, uveitis, or retinal vascular diseases), categorized into three perioperative PGA exposure groups: (1) PGA prescribed within 3 months prior to surgery ("PGA Before"), (2) PGA prescribed within 1 month after surgery ("PGA After"), and (3) PGA pr

Long-term comparison of posterior capsular opacification in highly myopic eyes between hydrophilic and hydrophobic intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE: To compare the long-term outcomes of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in highly myopic eyes between hydrophilic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and hydrophobic IOLs. METHODS: 679 highly myopic eyes (axial length ≥ 26 mm) undergoing phacoemulsification with IOL implantation were included in this retrospective study and divided into the hydrophilic IOL and hydrophobic IOL groups. The severity scores of PCO were evaluated using EPCO2000 software system, with both the areas of central 3.0 mm (PCO-3 mm) and of the capsulorhexis (PCO-CCC) analyzed. Clinically significant PCO was defined as

Intracameral moxifloxacin for endophthalmitis prophylaxis after cataract surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative endophthalmitis is a devastating complication of cataract surgery. Intracameral moxifloxacin has emerged as a promising prophylactic strategy due to its broad-spectrum properties and pre-formulated preparations. However, a robust synthesis of evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using evidence from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL, including RCTs published up to August 2025. The primary outcome was the incidence of endophthalmitis, while

Effect of Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Versus Conventional Clear Corneal Incisions on Endothelial Cell Density and Surgical Efficiency in Cataract Surgery.

Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) with the FEMTO LDV Z8 laser system in comparison to manual conventional cataract surgery (CCS). Background: Preservation of corneal endothelial integrity remains one of the most critical determinants of long-term visual quality after cataract surgery. The introduction of low-energy femtosecond laser systems has raised expectations for safer and more efficient procedures, particularity in cases with denser cataracts. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized study. Here, 38 eyes in the FLACS group an

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes After Cataract Surgery with Implantation of Either a Partial-Depth of Field Extended or Monofocal Intraocular Lens.

Background/Objectives: To compare the clinical outcomes following cataract surgery with implantation of a new partial depth of field (DOFi) intraocular lens (IOL) versus a monofocal IOL of identical material, platform, and haptic design. Methods: Single-center, non-randomized trial including 55 patients randomly assigned to be implanted either with the partial-DOFi IOL Tecnis PureSee (partial-DOFi group, 29 patients) or the Tecnis monofocal IOL DCB00/ZCU (both Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision) (monofocal group, 26 patients). Efficacy evaluation and predictive value of IL-20 and Apelin-13 after cataract surgery by phacoemulsification combined with IOL implantation.

BACKGROUND: Phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the standard treatment for cataract. A proportion of patients still experience suboptimal visual outcomes or postoperative complications. This study aimed to investigate the roles of Interleukin-20 (IL-20) and Apelin-13 as biomarkers for assessing visual outcomes and predicting postoperative prognosis following phacoemulsification with IOL implantation. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 193 cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification combined with IOL implantation between January 2023 and December

Microfibres in the Anterior Segment During and after Cataract Surgery: A Survey of Leading Ophthalmic Surgeons in Germany and Switzerland.

ABSTRACT: PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of microfibre contamination in the anterior segment during and after cataract surgery and to evaluate the use of polymer-based disposable materials in ophthalmic operating theatres in Germany and Switzerland. ABSTRACT: METHODS: A web-based survey was distributed to senior ophthalmic surgeons across hospitals, private clinics, and surgical centres in Germany and Switzerland. The questionnaire collected data on professional background, use of disposable versus reusable materials, and observations of microfibres intra- and postoperatively. Descriptive

The effect of sub-Tenon versus topical anesthesia on pupil responses in the early postoperative period after cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether sub-Tenon anesthesia used during cataract surgery has a potential effect on pupillary dynamics by assessing late-term pupillary responses, and to compare these outcomes with those under topical anesthesia to ensure the safety of sub-Tenon anesthesia. METHODS: The medical records of 63 eyes of 63 patients aged 50-70 who underwent cataract surgery between January 2022 and December 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data and medical histories were reviewed. Comprehensive eye examinations including visual acuity, biomicroscopic and detailed fundus exami

Refractive outcomes and predictability after cataract surgery combined with GATT or Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy.

To compare the refractive outcomes and biometric predictability after cataract surgery (PHACO) with those of PHACO combined with GATT and Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) goniotomy. This is a comparative, retrospective, multicenter study. One or both eyes of patients who had undergone PHACO (control group; CG) and those who had undergone combined PHACO and GATT (GI) or KDB (GII) that had been followed for at least 2 months were analyzed. The refraction observed on postoperative day 60 ± 15 was compared with the refraction predicted by the Barrett II Suite using VERION (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA). Poss

"Optimizing IOL centration in cataract surgery: Narrative review of techniques, challenges, and outcomes".

Intraocular lens (IOL) centration is pivotal in determining the visual quality and refractive success after cataract surgery, especially with premium IOLs such as multifocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF), and toric lenses. Despite the surgical and technological advancements, achieving perfect centration of the IOL remains a challenge, influenced by anatomical variations and intraoperative variables. Different preoperative variables, such as the patient's refractive status, the technique of axis marking, calculation of IOL power, IOL material and design, and measurement of visual angles, have
