Refractive outcomes after cataract surgery using swept-source OCT biometry and image-guided toric IOL alignment: a prospective comparative study in normal versus long axial length eyes.

This prospective comparative study evaluated the refractive accuracy of the ARGOS® swept-source OCT biometer combined with the VERION™ Image-Guided System in cataract surgery using the Barrett Universal II formula. Ninety eyes were divided into Normal Axial Length (AL) (22.5–26.0 mm, n = 50) and Long AL (≥ 26.0 mm, n = 40) groups. All underwent phacoemulsification with PanOptix® Toric IOL implantation. The primary outcome was mean refractive prediction error (RPE) at 1 month. The mean RPE was − 0.07 ± 0.18 D in the Normal AL Group and − 0.05 ± 0.23 D in the Long AL Group (P = 0.375). The perce

Perioperative treatments and endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in France: the national population-based ICCARE study.

Cataracts surgeries are the most common ophthalmic procedure worldwide. Despite established guidelines, perioperative topical treatment practices remain heterogeneous. Clarifying real-world prescribing patterns and their association with post-operative endophthalmitis (POE) is essential to optimize postoperative care and patient safety. The aim of this study was to describe perioperative topical treatments, estimate the POE incidence, and identify associated risk factors in France. We conducted a retrospective, population-based cohort study using real-world data from the Système National des D

Surface modification of intraocular lenses with zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine) for posterior capsular opacification prevention.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) remains the most common long-term complication after cataract surgery, primarily caused by adhesion and proliferation of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) on the intraocular lens (IOL) surface. Here, we report a zwitterionic carboxybetaine-coating strategy to endow IOLs with anti-adhesive and anti-fibrotic properties without compromising optical clarity. The zwitterionic monomer carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA) was grafted onto the IOL surface via plasma activation, forming a stable antifouling interface. The CBMA-coated surface exhibited reduced wa

Photothermal and cascade ROS generative multilayer as intraocular lens surface coating for effective posterior capsular opacification inhibition.

Cataract is the leading cause for blindness. While the intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the only effective treatment in cataract surgery. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most frequent complication after cataract surgery, mainly resulting from the proliferation and migration of residual human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) within the capsular bag. While surface modification of IOL has helped slow its progression, long-term effectiveness and biocompatibility remain major challenges. Supraphysiological concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by natural enzyme stim

Impact of cataract surgery on a delirium-related electroencephalography index in older adults.

The bispectral electroencephalography (BSEEG) method is a simple one-channel quantitative electroencephalography approach that yields a single index, with higher scores previously associated with more severe delirium in older adults. We prospectively measured BSEEG scores in 21 patients over 60 years old before and 1 month after cataract surgery. BSEEG scores significantly decreased after surgery (p=0.001), and this decrease significantly correlated with improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (r=0.52; p=0.02). Improved visual function after cataract surgery was associated with lower BSEEG

Clinical investigations and mechanistic insights into the antioxidant effects of drugs post-cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative recovery from cataract surgery in elderly patients can be complicated by oxidative stress and inflammation, which may affect clinical outcomes. Mingmu Dihuang Tang (MDT), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, is postulated to offer antioxidative and anti-inflammatory benefits in this context. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of MDT as an adjunctive therapy for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in elderly patients after cataract surgery. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 120 patients were allocated to either a contr
