OBJECTIVE: We assessed the safety of long-term varenicline administration for smoking cessation.
METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, multicenter trial, eligible adult smokers (18-75 years) who smoked an average of > or =10 cigarettes/day were randomized to either varenicline 1 mg twice daily (BID) or placebo for 52 weeks. Subjects made weekly clinic visits until week 8, and then every 4 weeks until week 52, with a follow-up visit at week 53. The target quit date was the morning of the week 1 clinic visit. A careful consideration was given to the results of surgical treatment of patients with traumatic cataracts complicated with concomitant pathology (corneal scars, anterior and posterior synechia, lens subdislocation, anterior and posterior crystalline capsule defects, etc.). In 107 cases phacoemulsification was done with other cases having lensectomy, intracapsular extraction or phacoaspiration of traumatic cataract. Indications and contraindications are specified for traumatic cataract phacoemulsification.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to present separately for black and white patients with advanced glaucoma 7-year results of two alternative surgical intervention sequences.
DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 332 black patients (451 eyes), 249 white patients (325 eyes), and 10 patients of other races (13 eyes) participated. Potential follow-up ranged from 4 to 7 years.

Since 1989, we have used a relatively straightforward technique for giving total body irradiation (TBI), using anterior and posterior parallel opposed fields with the arms and fists acting as compensators. The dosimetry, toxicity and outcome of 48 patients (26 adults, 22 children) treated with TBI using this technique have been audited. A dose of 14.4 Gy in eight fractions over 4 days was prescribed to all patients with an unrelated donor and 12 Gy in six fractions over 3 days to those with a sibling donor. The critical period in which human visual acuity may be lost after visual deprivation can be deduced by studying children with amblyopia which follows uncomplicated unilateral cataract and the subsequent aphakic blur. The visual acuity at the first contact lens fitting increases linearly on a log scale as a function of the age at onset between 3 and 10 years.
