Novel CRYGC Mutation in Conserved Ultraviolet-Protective Tryptophan (p.Trp131Arg) Is Linked to Autosomal Dominant Congenital Cataract.

Congenital cataract (CC), the most prevalent cause of childhood blindness and amblyopia, necessitates prompt and precise genetic diagnosis. The objective of this study is to identify the underlying genetic cause in a Swiss patient with isolated CC. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and copy number variation (CNV) analysis were conducted for variant identification in a patient born with a total binocular CC without a family history of CC. Sanger Sequencing was used to confirm the variant and segregation analysis was used to screen the non-affected parents. The first de novo missense mutation at c.39

A Comprehensive Investigation Into the Outcomes of Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) as a Treatment for Corneal Endothelial Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) has emerged as the preferred method for posterior lamellar keratoplasty, as it enables the replacement of the compromised host endothelium with a viable donor lamella. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of DSEK on surgical outcomes and visual acuity. METHODS: The research was carried out from November 2019 to October 2021, encompassing a sample of 18 patients (18 eyes) who satisfied the inclusion criteria for DSEK. The pre-operative evaluation was performed once before the surgery, while post-ope

Safety and efficacy in pediatric secondary intraocular lens implantation, in-the-bag versus sulcus implantation: a multicenter, single-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of pediatric cataract remains challenging because of the extremely high incidence of postoperative adverse events (AEs), especially the AEs related to the locations of secondary implanted intraocular lens (IOL). There are two common locations for secondary IOL implantation in pediatric aphakic eyes: ciliary sulcus or in-the-bag implantation. However, there are currently no large, prospective studies comparing complication rates and visual prognosis of in-the-bag versus ciliarysulcus secondary IOL implantation in pediatric patients. Whether or how much secondary in-the-bag

Short-Wavelength Light-Blocking Filters and Oral Melatonin Administration in Patients With Retinitis Pigmentosa: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The medical community is beginning to recognize that retinitis pigmentosa (RP), due to its disabling progression, eventually leads to a reduction in the patient´s quality of life, a direct economic impact, and an increase in the burden on the health care system. There is no curative treatment for the origin of the disease, and most of the current interventions fail in reducing the associated negative psychological states, such as anxiety and depression, which lead to increased variability of vision and pose a continuous threat to the patient's independence. OBJECTIVE: The aim of t
