Gore-Tex Suture-Associated Endophthalmitis in a Young Patient.

Gore-Tex sutures are commonly used for scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOL) due to their high tensile strength and lower risk of breakage. However, complications such as suture erosion and infection remain a concern. This report presents a case of Gore-Tex suture-associated endophthalmitis in a young patient. A 21-year-old man with a history of penetrating eye injury and subsequent aphakia in the left eye underwent SFIOL surgery using Gore-Tex sutures, with a resultant best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/30. Eighteen months later, he presented with sudden pain and an exposed suture

Novel Surgical Approach for Aphakia and Iridodialysis: Artificial Iris and Scleral-Fixated Lens as a Single Complex.

Background: Artificial iris (AI) implantation is an innovative and increasingly utilized surgical procedure for injured eyes with iris trauma. Methods: A 76-year-old female and a 34-year-old male presented at the emergency department with a traumatic corneo-scleral laceration and perforated corneal ulcer, respectively. Emergency surgeries were performed to restore ocular integrity. In both cases, a modified surgical technique involving the implantation of an AI was performed; however, two different models of AI were used. Results: The AIs were sutured with four stitches directly to the scleral

Impact of lens capsule status on pupillary capture following intrascleral intraocular lens fixation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pupillary capture can cause complications after intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation; however, no method has been established to definitively prevent pupillary capture. Therefore, we aimed to examine the differences in the incidence of pupillary capture in patients who underwent intrascleral IOL fixation and had intraoperative lens capsule preservation or lens capsule loss. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study, conducted at a University Hospital, included 83 eyes from 83 patients. The eyes were allocated to the capsule and no-capsule groups based on the presenc

Office-Based 25-Gauge Needle Revision of Closed Peripheral Iridotomy in Aphakic Silicone Oil-Filled Eyes.

PURPOSE: We present a novel office-based technique using a 25-gauge needle to reopen closed peripheral iridotomies in aphakic eyes filled with silicone oil. METHODS: We use a 25-gauge needle to enter the clear cornea and reopen the closed peripheral iridotomy, allowing for aqueous humor and silicone oil to escape and relieve elevated intraocular pressure. RESULTS: This minimally invasive office-based approach provides immediate relief of elevated intraocular pressure due to silicone oil-induced pupillary block, avoiding the need for more invasive surgical intervention. CONCLUSION: Our techn

Intraocular lens power calculation in pediatric cataract surgery: A narrative review.

Congenital cataract is a lens opacification that disrupts normal visual development, requiring early surgical intervention to prevent amblyopia. In children, timely surgery, followed by optical correction and vision rehabilitation, is crucial for achieving binocular vision with foveal fixation. The recommended surgical timing is within 8 weeks for unilateral cases and by 4 months for bilateral cases to minimize long-term visual impairment. Despite advancements in intraocular lens (IOL) technology and ophthalmic microsurgery, accurate IOL power selection in pediatric patients remains a challeng

Visual and refractive outcome, higher order aberrations and complications following intraocular lens exchange in eyes without comorbidities.

Intraocular lens (IOL) exchange is performed to treat severe IOL-related complications. There is little published data on the impact of this procedure on the refractive outcomes and intra- and postoperative complications, especially in otherwise healthy eyes. We investigated the refractive outcome of IOL exchange surgery, including corneal aberrations; additionally, we assessed the influence of different IOL characteristics on intraoperative and postoperative complications. This prospective clinical study included 35 eyes with homogenous IOL calcification without other ocular pathologies. Usin

GJA8-associated developmental eye disorders: a new multicentre study highlights mutational hotspots and genotype-phenotype correlations.

Variants in gap junction protein alpha 8 (GJA8), the gene encoding connexin 50 (Cx50), are primarily associated with developmental cataract, although some are associated with severe structural eye anomalies, such as aphakia (absent lens), microphthalmia (small eyes), and sclerocornea. To further define the relationship of GJA8 variants to ocular developmental disorders, we screened four large international cohorts with structural eye anomalies, including anophthalmia, microphthalmia, and coloboma (AMC) or cataracts. We identified 15 new families carrying 14 different heterozygous GJA8 variants

Congenital Aphakia Associated With a GJA8 Pathogenic Variant: A Case Report.

Congenital aphakia is a rare eye condition in which the lens fails to form properly. It is typically caused by pathogenic variants within the FOXE3 or HCCS genes; however, it can also be associated with GJA8 pathogenic variants. GJA8 should be included in the genetic testing of patients with this condition.
