Pneumatic vitreolysis (PVL) is the intravitreal injection of a small quantity of expansile gas for the purpose of achieving focal vitreomacular traction (VMT) release for eyes with symptomatic VMT, or inducing VMT release and closure of the macular defect for eyes with a small stage-2 macular hole (MH). Initially, there was limited interest in this technique upon its introduction for clinical treatment in human eyes in 1993. With the advent of optical coherence tomography allowing detailed observation of vitreomacular interface changes and rising importance of medical economics in recent years

PURPOSE: To investigate the tractional alterations of the central bouquet (CB) in idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERMs).
DESIGN: Retrospective, consecutive, observational case series.
METHODS: ERMs were classified according to a 4-stage grading system. The CB was defined as a circular area of approximately 100 μm composed of densely packed cones (and Müller cells) in the central fovea. Tractional abnormalities of the CB were identified with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Ex vivo histopathologic analysis was performed.
RESULTS: In this study 263 eyes with ERMs were included.

A 13-year-old female presented with diminution of vision in both eyes for 3 months following snakebite. Best-corrected visual acuities were hand movement in both eyes. Fundoscopy showed vitreous hemorrhage, and B-scan ultrasonography revealed an underlying tractional retinal detachment (TRD) involving the macula in both eyes. Patient underwent 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy in conjunction with belt buckling, endolaser, and silicone oil tamponade in the left eye. At 6 weeks postoperatively, best-corrected visual acuity of the left eye was noted to be 20/200 with settled TRD and attached retina.

Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis (EFE) caused by disseminated fusariosis is a rare condition that generally has a poor outcome, even with intensive therapy. Here, we describe a case in which this type of EFE was diagnosed with vitreous sampling and was successfully treated with 25-gauge vitrectomy and antifungals, including liposomal amphotericin B and voriconazole. A 16-year-old male patient undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia complained of eye pain and blurred vision in his right eye. Treatment was initiated for a vitreous opacity, possibly associated with herpetic retinitis, bu

The advent of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) medications has revolutionized the treatment of diabetic eye diseases. Herein, we report the outcomes of clinical studies carried out by the Pan-American Collaborative Retina Study Group (PACORES), with a specific focus on the efficacy of intravitreal bevacizumab in the management of diabetic macular edema and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. We will also discuss the use of intravitreal bevacizumab as a preoperative, adjuvant therapy before vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is characterized by the presence of epiretinal membrane (ERM), which exerts traction and detaches the retina. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells underlies ERM formation. Adjuvant therapies aimed at preventing recurrence of PVR after surgery mostly failed in clinical trials. This study was aimed to evaluate the anti-EMT properties of bio-active compounds epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), curcumin and lycopene as inhibitors of EMT induced by transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this work is to evaluate our own results of surgical treatment of retinal detachment in immature newborns. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the most complicated ocular disorders, both in terms of diagnosis and therapy. It is a potentially blinding illness that arises from the incomplete development of the bloodstream of the neuroretina of preterm infants. Currently, the most effective therapy is ablation of the avascular retina by laser photocoagulation or cryocoagulation. Despite this treatment, the immature retina may develop it´s detachment.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is one of the most common retinal vascular disease. Macular edema associated is responsible of the major decrease in visual acuity. The main causes often implicated are high blood pressure and diabetes. Other etiologies should be sought including CRVO secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). This rare etiology is associated with a poor prognosis when late diagnosed. Owing to the high associated mortality, early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary. We describe a case of APS complicated by a catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome in a patient w

BACKGROUND: Choroidal detachment (CD) is often observed at an early period particularly after trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage implant surgery. However, topical antiglaucoma eye drop-induced CD is a rare complication. Here, we report a case of topical bimatoprost-induced late-onset CD after trabeculectomy and review the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old man who suffered from primary open-angle glaucoma underwent his initial trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C in the right eye. Before the surgery, his intraocular pressure (IOP) was 20 to 22 mm Hg with bimatoprost 0.03%, dorzolamide 1%, an

Acute angle closure glaucoma (ACG) in the setting of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a catastrophic complication that has been documented infrequently in literature. Ours is the second only report that describes hemorrhagic choroidal detachment as an event leading to acute angle closure glaucoma in PCV patients and the first one to describe the use of diode cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) for this condition. The purpose of this article is to familiarize readers with this entity that has an extremely dismal visual prognosis. Ours is a descriptive case report of two patients with PCV comp

A 65-year-old Caucasian male presented to the eye emergency department with bilateral significant visual loss. He was otherwise healthy with no significant past medical history. Ophthalmic history was significant for chronic open-angle glaucoma, for which the patient was using latanoprost once daily to both eyes. There was no preceding history of trauma or ocular surgery and the patient was emmetropic. Two weeks prior to his presentation, he reported a headache, which settled spontaneously. Slit-lamp examination demonstrated bilateral keratic precipitates, bilateral significantly shallow anter
