Targeting Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in the Eye: Insights from a New Model of Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis.

Autoimmune uveitis is a relapsing blind-causing ocular condition with complex pathogenesis that is not completely understood. There is a high demand for accurate animal models of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) suitable for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of the disease and testing new therapeutic approaches. Here, we demonstrated that photoreceptor Ca2+/Zn2+-sensor protein recoverin is a uveoretinal antigen in albino rabbits provoking typical autoimmune chorioretinitis 2-4 weeks after immunization. The pathologic process in recoverin-induced EAU shared features with human disease a

Unmasking an unusual presentation of Hodgkin's lymphoma masquerading as ocular inflammation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is an extremely rare cause of ocular inflammation that is usually not considered in the typical workup of uveitis and other eye diseases. A few cases of ocular inflammation were reported previously showcasing HL with absence of typical symptoms of HL at presentation. Acknowledging the potential ocular inflammation associated with HL can prompt ophthalmologists to broaden their diagnostic approach and collaborate with internal medicine departments to investigate this rare yet significant etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Caucasian woman presenting u

Immune responses drive chorioretinitis and retinal pathology after neonatal CMV infection.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes a common congenital infection leading to long-term neurological impairments including brain, cochlear, and ocular pathology. Infection of newborn mice with murine (M)CMV is an established model of neuropathology caused by congenital CMV infection, with recent work suggesting that brain pathology may be driven by immune responses. In the eye, however, CMV retinitis is thought to result from virus-driven necrosis in the absence of T cell responses. We found that MCMV infection of newborn mice recapitulates human eye disease after congenital CMV infection, inclu

Cat Scratch Disease in Pediatrics: Who Has Systemic Involvement?

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae is the agent responsible for cat scratch disease (CSD). Although lymphadenopathy is typically the defining symptom, some patients develop potentially severe systemic compromise. It is unknown why some patients progress to systemic disease. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory characteristics of children with CSD and to analyze the differences between systemic versus localized infections. METHODS: Patients were identified by a retrospective review of medical records at a tertiary pediatric care hospital in Buenos

Case Report: Disseminated Tuberculosis After Kidney Transplantation.

Tuberculosis (TB) can cause significant morbidity and mortality among solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, including disseminated disease. Most TB cases after SOT occur in kidney transplant recipients, although data about TB in this population are sparse. Tuberculosis may present atypically in immunocompromised patients, underscoring why physicians must maintain high clinical suspicion when pertinent epidemiological risk factors are present, including birth or former residence in a country with endemic TB. We describe a unique case of disseminated TB in a 54-year-old Filipino woman who dev

An unusual presentation of invasive Fusarium aortitis in a patient who is immunocompromised: A case report.

Fusarium (F.) species are ubiquitous filamentous fungi that may cause various opportunistic infections, especially in patients who are immunocompromised. A rare manifestation of disseminated fusariosis affects the aortic valve and results in invasive aortitis, which poses a significant challenge for clinicians in diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report a case of a patient, aged 54 years, who is immunocompromised, presenting initially with Fusarium keratitis and chorioretinitis in both eyes and a new endovascular aortic mass. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography was performed, sugg

Multimodal imaging of an acute presentation of ocular histoplasmosis syndrome in an immunocompetent patient.

PURPOSE: Presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) is a posterior segment disorder that is usually subclinical unless choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) develops. It is thought to be the sequela of a prior systemic infection with Histoplasma capsulatum, and evidence supporting this association is based on epidemiologic, animal, and few enucleation studies. Acute presentation of chorioretinal involvement during an initial histoplasmosis systemic infection in immunocompetent patients is rarely reported, presumably due to the usual lack of or minimal symptoms of both the systemic and ocul

Refractory Candida dubliniensis Retinitis in an Immunocompetent Patient.

BACKGROUND: Fungal endophthalmitis is an intraocular infection that rarely develops in immunocompetent individuals. CASE: A 35-year-old healthy, immunocompetent male presented with a 1-week history of pain and redness in the left eye. Visual acuity was 20/50. Dilated fundus examination revealed focal chorioretinitis in the posterior pole with associated vitritis, suspicious for a fungal etiology. He was started empirically on oral voriconazole and valacyclovir. A comprehensive systemic workup returned negative. Inflammation worsened and a diagnostic vitrectomy was performed which revealed Can
