PURPOSE: To reassess the underlying pathophysiology of acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE) and relentless placoid chorioretinitis (RPC) through comparison with the non-inoculated eye of the von Szily animal model of neurotropic viral retinal infection.
METHODS: Narrative review.
RESULTS: Literature reports of isolated neurotropic viral entities and rising serological viral titers in APMPPE after presentation support a potential direct infective etiology. In general, viral transport along axons results in mitochondrial stasis and disruption of axoplasmic flow. C

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis is a rare manifestation of the parasitic infection, and reported cases often result in enucleation. Surgical removal of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis has not been previously described. We report a surgical case of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis spread from keratitis that ultimately resulted in a disease-free outcome.
OBSERVATIONS: A healthy 80-year-old male with a history of keratoconus requiring a penetrating keratoplasty in the fellow eye presented with a severe corneal ulcer clinically consistent with Acanthamoeba keratitis. He ultimately required a penet

Anterior uveitis is the most common extra-articular manifestation in children diagnosed with Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). It is typically a non-granulomatous, chronic, and asymptomatic uveitis. The lack of acute symptoms often delays the diagnosis with the incidence of severe ocular complications. Chorioretinitis lesions have been described in only 1% of cases. The absence of fundus changes can be explained by the impossibility of performing fundoscopy through the cloudy ocular media, secondary to inflammation. A 7-year-old female with a 3-month history of painless reduced vision came

PURPOSE: To review the literature on endogenous subretinal abscess (SRA).
METHODS: We searched in the literature for the terms 'subretinal abscess', 'chorio-retinal abscess' and 'choroidal abscess'.
RESULTS: A total of 122 patients were identified, of whom 20 patients (22 eyes) had no identified systemic infective foci (group 1) and 102 (120 eyes) had systemic infective foci (group 2). The mean age for group 1 was 44.6 years (range 2 weeks-82 years) and for group 2 was 43.2 years (range 1-89 years). The responsible pathogen was identified in 90% and 95% of cases, respectively. PURPOSE: To demonstrate a rare cause of acute, focal chorioretinitis.
METHODS: Review of slit-lamp fundoscopy, color fundus photography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography.
RESULTS: Slit-lamp examination revealed parafoveal microaneurysms, parafoveal intraretinal hemorrhages, and outer segment irregularity in the left eye. Fundus photographs demonstrated retinal hemorrhages and a greyish-whitish sheen in the central parafoveal area. Optical coherence tomography was notable for a small pocket of outer segment and retinal pigment epithelium disruption and

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to report a case who was treated with corticosteroids and anti- parasitic agents for ocular toxoplasmosis, but who progressed to acute retinal necrosis, and finally retinal detachment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old man presented to the ophthalmology clinic with a 1-month history of progressive blurred vision and floaters in his right eye. His best visual acuity (VA) was 20/20 in both eyes. The anterior segment was unremarkable. Funduscopic examination of the right eye revealed active lesions of whitish foci of chorioretinitis with surrounding edema along the su

SIGNIFICANCE: Severe vision loss from Bartonella neuroretinitis can be best treated to improve visual outcomes with a combination of systemic corticosteroids and antibiotics. Topical ketorolac 0.5% and difluprednate 0.05% are presented as a new adjunct therapy to potentially improve visual outcomes.
PURPOSE: This case illustrates severe posterior pole complications that can occur with cat scratch disease disseminated to the eye. Combination therapy with antibiotics and corticosteroids results in better visual outcomes. Topical treatment might further enhance visual outcome by preventing infla

Mycobacterium chimaera is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium, member of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), which has become a global public health concern due to infection following cardiac surgery performed with contaminated heater-cooler units. M. chimaera infection is characterized by a long latency, non-specific signs and symptoms and high mortality rates. Thus, the diagnosis is still challenging both for forensic pathologists and for clinicians. Clinical manifestations of M. chimaera infection include endocarditis, hepatitis, nephritis, encephalitis and chorioretinitis. A constant histop

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare form of chorioretinitis caused by retinal infestation by nematode larvae. Definitive diagnosis requires visualization of a motile nematode, but this can be challenging because the nematode is small, translucent, and usually motionless with overlying media opacity from cellular inflammation. The authors describe a case of DUSN in which widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography was used to localize a midperipheral intraretinal nematode facilitating subsequent clinical observation of movement. Inflammation resolved

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma retinochoroiditis (TRC) is the main cause of posterior uveitis in immunocompetent patients. Several studies have shown safety and efficacy of treatment with intravitreal clindamycin injection in patients with contraindications, inadequate response or side effects with classic oral therapy. The goal of this study is to describe anatomic and functional results of local treatment with intravitreal clindamycin injection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an observational, retrospective, single-center study in the ophthalmology service of Bordeaux university medical cent

OBJECTIVE: Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a progressive and destructive inflammatory disease of one hemisphere. Its cause is unknown. We investigated comorbidity and laterality factors that might predispose to RE.
METHODS: We retrospectively compared the histories of 160 RE patients to those with genetic generalized epilepsy (n = 154) and those with focal cortical dysplasia Type II (FCD II; n = 148).
RESULTS: The median/mean age at symptom onset in RE was 7/10 years (range = 1-53 years), and 58.1% of the patients were female. The female sex predominated in RE patients, with age > 7 years at

Nanophthalmic uveal effusion syndrome (UES) is an extremely rare idiopathic disease characterized by a short axial length of the eye, extremely thick sclera and choroid. These structural changes can lead to spontaneous serous detachment of the retina and peripheral choroid. There are many other causes of UES such as trauma, inflammation, cataract surgery, glaucoma, or retinal detachment. UES is classified into three types. All are characterized by a relapsing-remitting clinical course. The loss of visual acuity ranges from mild to very severe, depending on macular involvement. Changes of the r
