BACKGROUND: Conventional optical coherence tomography (OCT) has brought new insights to retinal diagnostics, but it is restricted due to its low scanning speed and limited resolution. In this study, high-resolution raster scanning OCT (HR-OCT) was used to identify typical changes in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).
METHODS: Fifteen consecutive patients with acute CSC were imaged using HR-OCT with an axial image resolution of 6 mum. The scanned area measured 6x6 mm2. Three-dimensional (3D) evaluation was performed using various analysing programmes.
RESULTS: Topographic changes in CSC

Uveal metastases are the most frequent malign intraocular tumour, of which more than 80% are localized in the choroids. This, together with the progressive increase in its incidence, makes its study and review necessary for a correct diagnosis and treatment in current clinical practice. Etiology varies according to the sex of the patient: lung carcinoma metastasises most frequently in men and breast carcinoma in women. These tend to multifocality and are generally localized in the posterior pole. Fifty percent of cases follow an asymptomatic development, but they can cause loss of vision, scot

Acute multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy is a fairly rare disease with unknown etiology and pathogenesis, possibly a focal response to a systemic inflammatory process. We present the case of a young patient who developed bilateral placoid retinal lesions, in different stages of evolution - cicatriceal lesions of the right eye and mixed cicatriceal and active lesions of the left eye. Investigations showed old immunity to cytomegalovirus and toxoplasma. Fluorescein angiography showed the typical fluorescein pattern (hypoflurecence in early phases and hyperfluorescence in late phases). The

PURPOSE: To evaluate the autofluorescence findings of acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC).
METHODS: Patients with ASPPC underwent complete ophthalmologic examinations, including biomicroscopy, fundus color photography, autofluorescence photography, and fluorescein angiography.
RESULTS: As expected, the patients had a yellowish lesion in the posterior pole. However, the lesion appeared to have two components, a diffuse placoid yellow discoloration at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and focal yellow spots that appeared to lie on the RPE. The diffuse pla

The diagnosis of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is best established by isolating the virus from urine or saliva within the first 2 weeks of life. Detection beyond this point may reflect perinatal acquisition of CMV. Cytomegalovirus is usually transmitted by direct human-to-human contact through vertical or horizontal routes. Infected persons can excrete CMV in urine, saliva, semen, cervical secretions, or breast milk. Because the virus establishes latent infections, blood products and solid organs can also transmit CMV. In the surgical literature, intestinal CMV-infected cells in i

Scedosporium apiospermum is a saprophytic ubiquitous filamentous fungus. It can cause a wide spectrum of diseases, from localized to invasive infections. S apiospermum has been described as one of the major fungal agents of chronic colonization of airways in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Invasive infections due to S apiospermum are only rarely reported in CF after lung transplantation. A 26-year-old woman with CF and chronic bronchial colonization by S apiospermum developed bilateral chorioretinitis and subcutaneous nodules 4 weeks after double-lung transplantation (LTx). Isolates of S apiosp

INTRODUCTION: Bartonella henselae is included into the group of gram-negative bacteria that can cause not so rare disease known as cat-scratch disease (CSD). This disease is characterized by the specific general symptoms, and the complications in the eyes can be manifested in the form of neuroretinitis, follicular conjunctivitis and focal chorioretinitis. In this paper clinical and epidemiological characteristics of a patient with ophthalmologic complications caused by Bartonella henselae are described. We indicate diagnostic possibilities and the criteria for making the diagnosis.

A 29-year-old man who had been treated for acute anterior uveitis in a local medical office and observed for 1 month presented complaining of distorted vision in his left eye for 1 week. On ophthalmic examination, the anterior segment was relatively quiet with few cells. A posterior segment examination revealed cystoid macular edema and multiple splinter retinal hemorrhages. Results of all laboratory and imaging studies were negative, except for a positive HLA-B27 haplotype. Fluorescein angiography revealed massive leakage in the mid and late phase, consistent with chorioretinitis. Periocular

While idiopathic central serous retinopathy (ICSC) is a common ocular condition, bullous exudative retinal detachment associated with ICSC is a relatively rare finding. Bullous retinal detachment has been described as a severe variant of ICSC, characterised by multiple leaking pigment epithelial detachments and the presence of shifting neuro-sensory sub-retinal fluid. The peculiar clinical findings may present a diagnostic dilemma and lead to inappropriate treatment. Here, we describe the atypical presentation of ICSC with bullous retinal detachment and the effect of focal laser treatment on r

Toxoplasma gondii infection is an important cause of chorioretinitis in Europe and the United States. Ophthalmological examination and a good clinical response to adequate therapy mainly support ocular toxoplasmosis diagnosis. However, clinical diagnostic may be difficult in some atypical cases. In these cases, laboratory confirmation, based on detection of local specific antibodies and parasite DNA by conventional PCR, is therefore important to confirm the disease etiology. More recently, real-time PCR has been developed to improve prenatal congenital toxoplasmosis diagnosis. We therefore exa

PURPOSE: Retinochoroiditis is generally diagnosed after the first year of life and the association with congenital toxoplasmosis presents a diagnostic dilemma. The detection of local intraocular specific antibodies could be useful for diagnosis.
METHODS: We studied six patients (mean age 7 +/- 5 years) with retinochoroiditis which appeared after the first year of life. Aqueous and serum were analysed by immunoblotting for anti T. gondii IgG to diagnose toxoplasmosis.
RESULTS: All serum samples were positive only for anti T. gondii IgG. The retinochoroiditis was active in three patients and i
