Chorioretinitis induced by intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillations for urinary bladder carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: We report the rare case of a chorioretinitis occurring after intravesical BCG instillation to cure in situ carcinoma. HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 57-year-old man was treated for bladder carcinoma with BCG instillations. Visual acuity was 20/20 in the right eye and 20/40 in the left eye. Bilateral chorioretinitis was discovered three months after initiation of intravesical BCG therapy. THERAPY AND OUTCOME: No progression of ocular lesions could be seen after a 6 months therapy with rifampicin, isoniazide and ethambutol. CONCLUSIONS: BCG chorioretinitis is a rare complication that can be

[Criteria for the clinical cure of tuberculosis of the eye].

The results of examination were analyzed in 314 patients with tuberculosis of the eye, including 120 patients having its inactive phase. Tuberculin skin tests were performed in 31 patients; fluorescence angiography and photostress tests were conducted in 122 patients, and 120 patients underwent lacrimal fluid crystallography. To define the cure rate in tuberculosis of the eye, it is necessary to have a complex of criteria: no clinical signs of active tuberculous inflammation in the ocular tunics and environments; no clinical, X-ray, and laboratory manifestations of tuberculosis of other organs

Comparison of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunoblotting, and PCR for diagnosis of toxoplasmic chorioretinitis.

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the major cause of posterior uvetis in European populations. The clinical diagnosis of toxoplasmic chorioretinitis is based upon ophthalmoscopic findings, which are often but not always typical. Laboratory testing is therefore important to confirm the etiology of the disease. In the present 2-year prospective study, the relative diagnostic sensitivities of the three analytical techniques (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA], immunoblotting, and PCR) were compared by using a group of patients (n = 19) with suspected ocular toxoplasmosis. The relative specificities

[Diagnosis of toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis using fluid from the anterior ocular chamber].

The authors discuss methods of improvement of the etiologic diagnosis of the toxoplasma and toxocara associated posterior uveititis, by examining specific antibodies in the aqueous humor. Paired samples of aqueous humor and serum were analyzed in 23 patients. Chorioretinitis of infectious etiology was suspected in 15 patients, 3 patients were treated for panuveitis, 4 patients for intermediate uveitis, and in 1 patient the sample was obtained to rule out malignant melanoma. The local ocular antibody production was calculated according to Desmonts. Toxoplasma etiology was confirmed by local ant

Frosted branch angiitis and late peripheral retinochoroidal scar in a patient with acquired toxoplasmosis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of acute frosted branch angiitis associated with acquired toxoplasmosis in which a late peripheral chorioretinal scar developed. RESULTS: A 32-year-old man without systemic symptoms presented with sudden visual loss in his left eye. Examination demonstrated frosted branch angiitis without necrotizing chorioretinitis. Serologic tests showed elevated Toxoplasma gondii-specific immunoglobulin M antibody titers. Antitoxoplasmic therapy and oral steroids healed the ocular inflammation. In a follow-up visit one year later, a peripheral chorioretinal scar was noted. CONCLU

Usefulness of immunoblotting and Goldmann-Witmer coefficient for biological diagnosis of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.

Toxoplasmosis is a frequent cause of retinochoroiditis. Although the diagnosis relies mainly on ophthalmological examination, biological approaches are particularly useful in patients with atypical lesions. In a prospective study to determine the value of immunoblotting and immune load calculation in the diagnosis of active toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, aqueous humor samples from 21 patients with retinochoroiditis and 5 control patients with cataracts were tested. Immune load was calculated on the basis of intraocular antibody production. The immune load ratio between aqueous humor and serum

Dorsal flexion of head and neck for rigid oesophagoscopy--a caution for hidden foreign bodies dropped into the epipharynx.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, 98% of children in Zimbabwe received breastmilk, however only 40% of babies under six months were exclusively breastfed 24 h prior to data collection. A 2014 survey revealed that Matabeleland South Province had the country's highest starvation rates and food insecurities were rife. This study aimed at investigating maternal, infant, household, environmental and cultural factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practice in Gwanda District. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2018. Interviews used pretested structured questionnaires

[Secondary ocular syphilis with chorioretinitis of the posterior pole - a case report].

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of syphilis is often very difficult due to the absence of typical organ manifestation. In addition syphilis has the ability to imitate any ocular inflammation. This may result in misdiagnosis and delay of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Up to now the first choice therapy is penicillin. CASE REPORT: We report about an otherwise healthy, 40 year-old-woman, who was referred to the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Tuebingen, due to an unclear loss of visual acuity (OD 0.1 and OS 0.4). The fundus examination disclosed focal chorioretinitis on the posterior pole,

[Analysis of the local synthesis of Toxoplasma gondii-specific immunoglobulins in the anterior eye chamber fluid. Report of two cases].

We reported two cases strongly suspected of ocular toxoplasmosis, in which a puncture of anterior eye chamber was performed for a final verification of clinical diagnosis. In both patients, fresh focal lesions of retinochoroiditis associated with old pigmented retinal scars were diagnosed. The 62-year-old women had a serological evidence of recently acquired T. gondii infection with an increasing IgG titre of a low avidity and a presence of specific IgM and IgA antibodies. In the 13-year-old girl, an immunological profile of the chronic infection was shown, confirmed by a high IgG avidity valu
