Agglutination of acetone treated toxoplasma (AC) is different from that one of formalin fixed parasites (HS). Sera from patients with a recently acquired ("acute") infection agglutinate both HS and AC parasites suspensions as well; contrary to sera from patients with past infection ("chronic stage") in which high titers of HS agglutination are often present, while the titres of AC agglutination are lower even negative. Ocular toxoplasmosis typically presents as a focal necrotizing retinochoroiditis. We report a case of diffuse necrotizing retinochoroiditis due to toxoplasmosis in a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The appearance at initial presentation was similar to the acute retinal necrosis syndrome. We recommend that toxoplasmosis be considered in the differential diagnosis of diffuse retinal necrosis in patients with AIDS. Although systemic disseminated toxoplasmosis is not rare in AIDS, this is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of diffuse ocular involvement.

The role of virus-infected mononuclear leukocytes (MNLs) in the pathogenesis of neonatal herpetic chorioretinitis in newborn rabbits was investigated. As early as 2 days after inoculating the animals' skins with type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV-2), infectious MNLs in the infected animals' peripheral blood were found. This study describes the ultrastructural characteristics of retinal parasitization by Toxoplasma gondii in a congenital mouse model. Forty-two eyes from infected mice, 18-22-weeks-old, and 24 control eyes were initially studied by light microscopy of semithin sections. The present paper deals with the electroretinographic findings in 30 patients with inflammatory or postinflammatory disturbances of the fundus. The alterations of the scotopic ERG depend on the localization and extent of the disease. The individual components of the ERG are affected differently. It is evident that in a high percentage of patients with unilateral disease the ERG of the fellow eye was affected as well. This might be due to an immunologic reaction. It is pointed out that further investigations are required in order to resolve the problems involved.

Of 38 heroin addicts treated for systemic candidal infections, 36 had metastatic cutaneous lesions (deep-seated scalp nodules and pustulosis in hairy zones), 15 had ocular localizations (mainly chorioretinitis), and 10 had osteoarticular involvement (vertebrae, costal cartilage, knees, and sacroiliac). The morphology of S-antigen-induced uveoretinitis in guinea pigs has been studied using transmission electron microscopy. Purified bovine retinal S-antigen was shown to produce a focal chorioretinitis, characterized by selective damage to the outer retina and, almost exclusively, a mononuclear cell infiltration of the choroid and retina. A histopathological study of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis in 39 eyes of mice infected in utero with Toxoplasma gondii and sacrificed at 16 weeks post-partum showed a wide variation in the pattern of tissue destruction. The clinical and angiographic findings in 2 patients with focal macular choroidopathy (FMC) are described.
