Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography biomarkers in vitreoretinal lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Although early detection is critical, diagnosing vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) remains difficult. We sought to assess the potential diagnostic value of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in VRL. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records and pre-treatment SD-OCT images of biopsy-confirmed VRL and uveitis patients, with primary involvement of the sub-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the outer retina, including acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC), chronic stage sympathetic ophthalmitis (SO), and idiopathic multifocal choroiditis (MFC). Proposing a Neurotropic Etiology for Acute Posterior Multifocal Placoid Pigment Epitheliopathy and Relentless Placoid Chorioretinitis.

PURPOSE: To reassess the underlying pathophysiology of acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE) and relentless placoid chorioretinitis (RPC) through comparison with the non-inoculated eye of the von Szily animal model of neurotropic viral retinal infection. METHODS: Narrative review. RESULTS: Literature reports of isolated neurotropic viral entities and rising serological viral titers in APMPPE after presentation support a potential direct infective etiology. In general, viral transport along axons results in mitochondrial stasis and disruption of axoplasmic flow. C

Surgical management of acanthamoeba chorioretinitis.

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis is a rare manifestation of the parasitic infection, and reported cases often result in enucleation. Surgical removal of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis has not been previously described. We report a surgical case of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis spread from keratitis that ultimately resulted in a disease-free outcome. OBSERVATIONS: A healthy 80-year-old male with a history of keratoconus requiring a penetrating keratoplasty in the fellow eye presented with a severe corneal ulcer clinically consistent with Acanthamoeba keratitis. He ultimately required a penet

Anterior and posterior uveitis associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis -case report.

Anterior uveitis is the most common extra-articular manifestation in children diagnosed with Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). It is typically a non-granulomatous, chronic, and asymptomatic uveitis. The lack of acute symptoms often delays the diagnosis with the incidence of severe ocular complications. Chorioretinitis lesions have been described in only 1% of cases. The absence of fundus changes can be explained by the impossibility of performing fundoscopy through the cloudy ocular media, secondary to inflammation. A 7-year-old female with a 3-month history of painless reduced vision came

Widefield SS-OCTA for Localization of Retinal Nematode in Diffuse Unilateral Subacute Neuroretinitis.

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare form of chorioretinitis caused by retinal infestation by nematode larvae. Definitive diagnosis requires visualization of a motile nematode, but this can be challenging because the nematode is small, translucent, and usually motionless with overlying media opacity from cellular inflammation. The authors describe a case of DUSN in which widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography was used to localize a midperipheral intraretinal nematode facilitating subsequent clinical observation of movement. Inflammation resolved

Rasmussen encephalitis: Predisposing factors and their potential role in unilaterality.

OBJECTIVE: Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a progressive and destructive inflammatory disease of one hemisphere. Its cause is unknown. We investigated comorbidity and laterality factors that might predispose to RE. METHODS: We retrospectively compared the histories of 160 RE patients to those with genetic generalized epilepsy (n = 154) and those with focal cortical dysplasia Type II (FCD II; n = 148). RESULTS: The median/mean age at symptom onset in RE was 7/10 years (range = 1-53 years), and 58.1% of the patients were female. The female sex predominated in RE patients, with age > 7 years at

Comparing the Results of Vitrectomy and Sclerectomy in a Patient with Nanophthalmic Uveal Effusion Syndrome.

Nanophthalmic uveal effusion syndrome (UES) is an extremely rare idiopathic disease characterized by a short axial length of the eye, extremely thick sclera and choroid. These structural changes can lead to spontaneous serous detachment of the retina and peripheral choroid. There are many other causes of UES such as trauma, inflammation, cataract surgery, glaucoma, or retinal detachment. UES is classified into three types. All are characterized by a relapsing-remitting clinical course. The loss of visual acuity ranges from mild to very severe, depending on macular involvement. Changes of the r

Infectious Uveitis after Local Steroid and/or Methotrexate Injections at A Tertiary Referral Center in New Zealand: A Case Series.

AIM: Infectious uveitis is one of the most visually devastating causes of uveitis worldwide and accounts for 19.6% of all cases of uveitis in New Zealand. With the burgeoning use of intravitreal injections, there has been a commensurate increase in the number of injection-related complications and reports of infectious uveitis following their administration in recent years. We present a case series of four patients with infectious uveitis after local injections. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed the data of four patients (mean age, 67.25 ± 7.58 years) who presented to the department of opht
