Unmasking an unusual presentation of Hodgkin's lymphoma masquerading as ocular inflammation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is an extremely rare cause of ocular inflammation that is usually not considered in the typical workup of uveitis and other eye diseases. A few cases of ocular inflammation were reported previously showcasing HL with absence of typical symptoms of HL at presentation. Acknowledging the potential ocular inflammation associated with HL can prompt ophthalmologists to broaden their diagnostic approach and collaborate with internal medicine departments to investigate this rare yet significant etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Caucasian woman presenting u

Oculosystemic pneumocystosis in 2 sibling Chihuahuas.

Sibling female and male Chihuahuas were evaluated for a 9-month history of tachypnea that failed to respond to fenbendazole, doxycycline, amoxicillin-clavulanate, and prednisone. Physical examination identified tachypnea, hyperpnea, and harsh bronchovesicular lung sounds. Fundic examination disclosed diffuse chorioretinitis, manifested as multifocal chorioretinal granulomas in the female dog and occasional chorioretinal scars in the male dog. Thoracic radiographs indicated moderate to severe interstitial to broncho-interstitial infiltrates in both dogs. Serum and urine antigen and antibody tes

Capsular phimosis with intraocular lens tilt and decentration.

A 34-year-old woman with quiescent bilateral intermediate uveitis maintained on once-daily dexamethasone 0.1% eyedrops, complicated by left cataract and glaucoma controlled with a single antiglaucoma medication, presented for cataract surgery. Her left corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was 20/40 because of a posterior subcapsular lens opacity. The anterior chamber angles appeared closed in all 4 quadrants on gonioscopy. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) confirmed the gonioscopy findings and, in addition, revealed a crystalline lens thickness of 5.53 mm, normal ciliary body structure, and mu

Toxoplasma Neuroretinitis.

Neuroretinitis is an inflammatory condition with rapid unilateral vision loss, optic disc edema, and macular star formation. While neuroretinitis is commonly due to infectious causes such as Bartonella henselae, neuroretinitis due to toxoplasmosis is uncommon. A 29-year-old male presents to our neuro-ophthalmology clinic on December 7, 2021, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with symptoms of left eye pain and blurred vision. Subsequent workup led to the diagnosis and treatment of toxoplasma neuroretinitis. The fundus exam eventually demonstrated a notable macular star. Treatme

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii bradyzoite genes in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells among patients with toxoplasmic chorioretinitis.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmic chorioretinitis may occur as a result of acquired toxoplasmosis or reactivated congenital toxoplasmosis. In this study, Toxoplasma gondii bradyzoite genes along with the B1 gene were evaluated to detect T. gondii DNA in serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with toxoplasmic chorioretinitis. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 10 patients (7 cases of active chorioretinal lesions and 3 cases of old chorioretinal scars). The genomic DNA was extracted from the patients' serum and PBMCs and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was perfor

The Diagnostic Conundrum of Retinitis and a Pigmented Scar.

We report a finding of a pigmented chorioretinal scar with acute retinal necrosis (ARN) caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) infection rather than toxoplasma, creating an initial diagnostic dilemma. A 53-year-old functionally monocular male presented with painless floaters and blurry vision in his seeing eye over a period of 4 days. An exam demonstrated anterior chamber (AC) reaction, vitritis, multifocal patches of whitening, and an occlusive retinal vasculitis. A superior pigmented chorioretinal scar with overlying contracted vitreous was noted in the periphery with no adjacent retinal w
