A 73-year-old woman developed multiple depigmented lesions in the fundus 4-6 months after an episode of acute Herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Post-mortem examination of the globe 15 years after this acute episode confirmed multiple old chorioretinal scars probably due to vasculitis of the short posterior ciliary arteries and branches. Patchy old infarcts were also noted in the iris.

The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the epidemiological characteristics of the sensory heterotropia cases seen in the Opthamology Department of Douala General Hospital between November 1991 and November 1999. Sensory heterotropia accounted for 22.5% of the cases of strabismus reported. Onset was before the age of one year in 80.4% of cases and after the age of one year in 19.6% of cases. All cases of esotropia were apparent before the age of one year. Sensory heterotropia was associated with amblyopia in 89.3% of cases, with eccentric fixation in 78.6% of cases and with nystag

Surgical extraction of the submascular neovascular membrane (SNM) is one of the new indications for surgery of the macula. The functional results after surgical extraction of the SNM depend on the state of the submascular pigmented epithelium and neuroepithelium which is, last not least, conditioned by the etiology of SNM. The majority of SNM in age-related macular degenerations has a poor prognosis, These SNM are as a rule nourished from several vascular sources and markedly destroy the pigmented epithelium because they penetrate beneath and above it. The authors evaluate in the submitted pap

PURPOSE: To elucidate the role and clinical spectrum of congenital lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection as a cause of chorioretinopathy, congenital hydrocephalus, and macrocephaly or microcephaly in the United States.
METHODS: We performed complete ophthalmologic surveys of all residents at Misericordia, a home for the severely mentally retarded in Chicago, and prospectively evaluated all patients with chorioretinitis or chorioretinal scars during a 36-month period at Children's Memorial Hospital, also located in Chicago. Sera for patients demonstrating chorioretinal scars (a sign of

PURPOSE: To report unilateral macular lesions, mimicking toxoplasmic scars, in two children with serological evidence for lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection.
METHODS: Case reports.
RESULTS: Patients were 4 and 5 years old, with negative toxoplasma serologies and no sign of rubella, cytomegalovirus, or herpes simplex infection (TORCH evaluation). Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection was detected in both cases by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by Western immunoblotting. The modes of infection were unknown; no history of symptomatic systemic lymphocytic chorio

We report a case of a 4 months old boy with esotropia of the left eye with large bilateral chorioretinal toxoplasmic macular scars. Chorioretinal scars are the most common eye finding in congenital toxoplasmosis and are often located in the macular region. Most infants with congenital infection are asymptomatic at birth but will develop retinal and/or neurologic damage later in life with consequent loss of vision. A routine examination of the fundus and computed tomography of the head can be negative. Serologic testing is essential for the diagnosis and the follow-up of the infection. Every in

PURPOSE: This study was initiated to investigate the causes of childhood blindness and visual impairment in the United States. We also sought a particular etiology--congenital lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV)--which has been considered exceedingly rare, in a fixed target population of children, the severely mentally retarded.
METHODS: We undertook a library-based study of the world literature to shed light on the causes of childhood blindness internationally and to put our data in context. We prospectively examined all consented children (159) at 2 institutions in the United States t

Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy is a non-granulomatous chorioretinitis of uncertain origin that occurs in healthy young adults. The prevailing opinion is that the disease has a good long-term prognosis for visual acuity because it is self-limiting and chorioretinal scars do not enlarge with time. A middle-aged adult male who had acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy in one eye has been followed for 22 years. After apparent clinical healing of the placoid epithelial lesions, widespread severe choroidal atrophy with visual loss occurred and progresse

BACKGROUND: Presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) refers to a choroidopathy that is characterized by the presence of multiple peripheral atrophic chorioretinal scars, peri-papillary atrophy, and choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM), usually in or adjacent to the fovea. In the United States, POHS is an important cause of loss of central visual acuity in patients between the ages of 20 and 50 years. A number of treatment options for subfoveal and juxtafoveal CNVMs in POHS have been under investigation, including laser photocoagulation, surgical excision of the CNVM, and radiation ther

Inflammatory eye diseases in Aids patients are common. For CMV-retinitis an incidence of up to 45% is reported in the literature. Other retinal diseases such as acute retinal necrosis are less common but are difficult to treat and often follow a disastrous course. Ocular lues may present very different clinical pictures and is the great "imitator" in AIDS patients as well. In toxoplasmosis the typical chorioretinal scars next to the acute inflammatory infiltrates are commonly absent. Infections with candida occur in i.v. drug-addicts in particular. Bacterial corneal ulcers and herpetic keratit

BACKGROUND: More than 83 cases of retinal laser injury were reported in the literature. Most of these cases involved direct exposure of the patient's retina to laser. The authors observed two patients who had laser injury to the retina caused by the reflected beams from a pulsed neodymium: YAG (Nd:YAG) laser.
METHODS: The clinical course of each patient after laser injury to the macular area with an Nd:YAG laser were followed for 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 months.
RESULTS: Both patients were graduate students and were injured by the reflected beams of short-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers (1064 nm). The affected

In this retrospective study we analysed the prevalence of retino-pathy of prematurity (ROP) and its sequelae in a sample of premature infants with birth weight less than 1500 grams. From 1 January 1990 to 31 October 1993, we studied 160 surviving premature infants with very low birth weight (< 1.500 g) referred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the I.R.C.C.S. Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy. Thirty percent of these infants suffered from ROP, and 13.7%, with severe ROP, underwent cryotherapy. These latter had very-very low birth weight (< 1.000 g) and low gestational age (< 28 weeks).

AIMS: The correlation between cryoscars and visual field defects following cryoablation was studied.
METHODS: A Humphrey 120 full field screening test was performed in 10 children (15 eyes) who were treated by cryotherapy between 10 and 14 years previously for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) stage 3.
RESULTS: In eight eyes treated by cryoablation through 360 degrees in zone I or II, a moderate circumferential peripheral visual field constriction was found. In seven other eyes, cryotreated up to 180 degrees only in the temporal retina (zone III), a nasal field constriction was noted. There w

The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of reactivation ocular toxoplasmosis in bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients and to propose guidelines for identification and chemoprophylaxis of high-risk patients. The study design was a series of cases from the tertiary care university hospital which has an active BMT program. The patients were two recipients of autologous BMTs with past histories of toxoplasma retinochoroiditis who developed symptomatic reactivation of ocular toxoplasmosis as documented by formal opthalmologic examination in the early post-transplant period.
