Altered cerebrospinal fluid-based clearance mechanisms in aging autistic adults.

BACKGROUND: Autistic adults demonstrate a 4-6-fold increased risk of unspecified dementia compared with the general population; however, the neurobiological substrates underlying this elevated risk remain unexplored. Alterations in cerebrospinal fluid-based mechanisms involved in brain metabolic waste clearance may represent a shared neuropathological pathway between autism spectrum disorder and dementia. Specifically, developmental deviations in cerebrospinal fluid-related imaging markers have been consistently reported in autistic infants, children, and adolescents, and brain amyloid and oth

Clinical features, diagnosis, management, and prognosis of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.

Because of its benign nature and rarity, circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) often receives limited attention, leading to a high rate of misdiagnosis and a lack of standardized treatment protocols. We provide a thorough clarification of the demographics, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and prognosis of CCH. We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, EMBASE, and Ovid databases up to December, 2023, to identify relevant studies. The study included 106 studies encompassing 3854 patients with CCH. The demographic profile revealed a male preponderance (62 %, 95 % CI 61-64 %) and

Anterior choroidal artery aneurysms: a systematic review and meta-analysis of outcomes and ischemic complications following surgical and endovascular treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior choroidal artery (AChA) aneurysms account for 2%-5% of all intracranial aneurysms. Treatment considerations include microsurgical clipping, flow diversion, or coiling with or without adjunctive devices. AChA aneurysms pose challenges in treatment due to the origination of the aneurysm from the origin or proximal segment of the AChA. The AChA is particularly susceptible to vasospasm and occlusion during treatment with devastating neurological deficits, including hemiparesis, hemianesthesia, lethargy, neglect, and hemianopia. In this study, the authors performed a meta-analys

Use of a flow diverter in a small-caliber end artery anterior choroidal dissecting pseudoaneurysm: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Anterior choroidal artery (AChA) fusiform aneurysms are exceedingly rare and associated with high rebleeding and mortality rates. Their difficult anatomy comes with a broad range of treatment options, including bypass, stent-assisted coiling, and flow diversion. Currently, flow diverters are approved for large-caliber internal carotid artery segment aneurysms. However, many institutions have expanded their use to distal small-caliber vessels, which raises questions regarding device sizing and long-term patency. The authors present a dissecting distal AChA fusiform pseudoaneurysm tr

Choroidal artery embolization in the management of cerebrospinal fluid overproduction: case report and review of the literature.

Diffuse villous hyperplasia of the choroid plexus (DVHCP) is a rare cause of communicating hydrocephalus. DVHCP may be diagnosed radiographically and through histological evaluation. It may be associated with genetic abnormalities, particularly involving chromosome 9. Due to CSF overproduction, patients with DVHCP often fail management with shunting alone and may require adjuvant interventions. The authors present the case of a child with partial trisomy 9p and delayed diagnosis of hydrocephalus with radiographic evidence of DVHCP who was successfully managed with ventriculoperitoneal shunt (V

The Incidence of Ocular Tuberculosis in Australia Over the Past 10 Years (2006-2015).

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence and clinical phenotype of ocular tuberculosis in Australia based on the mandatory jurisdictional health notification records for TB. METHODS: A whole population retrospective case series (Australia). Patients diagnosed with ocular tuberculosis were identified over the past 10 years (1 January 2006 to 31 December 2015) as recorded by individual Health Department jurisdictions per mandatory health notifications. The incidence rates were calculated based on the available Australian census data. Incidence rates were age and sex standardized. RESULTS: A total o

Differences in the Genetic Susceptibility to Age-Related Macular Degeneration Clinical Subtypes.

PURPOSE: We compared across age-related macular degeneration (AMD) subtypes the effect of AMD risk variants, their predictive power, and heritability. METHODS: The prevalence of AMD was estimated among active non-Hispanic white Kaiser Permanente Northern California members who were at least 65 years of age as of June 2013. The genetic analysis included 5,170 overall AMD cases ascertained from electronic health records (EHR), including 1,239 choroidal neovascularization (CNV) cases and 1,060 nonexudative AMD cases without CNV, and 23,130 controls of non-Hispanic white ancestry from the Kaiser

Choroidal lymphoma: clinical features and association with systemic lymphoma.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and histopathologic features of choroidal lymphoma (CL) and its association with systemic lymphoma. DESIGN: Observational case series. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-nine patients (73 eyes) with CL. METHODS: Retrospective chart review. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical features, histopathology, and systemic lymphoma. RESULTS: Of 59 patients with CL, systemic lymphoma was absent in 41 (primary CL; 69%) and present in 18 (secondary CL; 31%). Of 18 patients with systemic lymphoma at presentation, 14 (78%) had known systemic lymphoma and 4 (22%) were diagnosed with system

Evaluation of the gene encoding the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-3 in various maculopathies.

PURPOSE: Mutations in the gene encoding the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-3 (TIMP3) have been shown previously to cause Sorsby's fundus dystrophy, an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by extracellular matrix irregularities in Bruch's membrane. To assess the involvement of TIMP3 in a variety of other macular dystrophies, the authors have screened this gene for disease-causing mutations in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), adult vitelliform macular dystrophy (AVMD), central areolar choroidal dystrophy (CACD), syndrome-associated macular dystrophies, cone-rod dystrophy, and

A case of cerebellar hamartoma suggesting abnormal cell migration.

A rare case of hamartoma of the left cerebellar hemisphere was recognized in an 11-month-old male infant whose mother had a history of unspecified medication in the early gestational period and had a difficult delivery. A notably large head and marked developmental disorders, like hypotonic cerebral palsy, were observed soon after birth. A computed tomogram revealed an iso-minimally enhanced large mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere, which deformed the fourth ventricle and compressed the right cerebellum, as well as moderate cerebral atrophy. Histologically, the border between the cerebella
