Treatment of foveal-involving tractional retinal detachments from proliferative diabetic retinopathy with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of patients with fovea-off tractional retinal detachment (TRD) from proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) treated with serial anti-VEGF therapy. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients with fovea-off TRD from PDR treated with serial anti-VEGF therapy. Outcome measures included visual acuity, foveal reattachment, need for vitrectomy, number of intravitreal injections, and average interval between injections. RESULTS: 12 eyes of 10 patients were included. 75% of eyes (n = 9) had foveal reattachment with anti-VEGF therapy alone. The average time f

Longitudinal Progression of Horseshoe Retinal Tear-Associated Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Without Clinically Evident Complete Posterior Vitreous Detachment: A Case Report.

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is considered a key event in the pathogenesis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), and horseshoe retinal tears are generally associated with vitreoretinal traction during PVD evolution. We report the longitudinal progression of horseshoe retinal tear-associated RRD without clinically evident complete PVD. A 64-year-old nonmyopic man presented to a general ophthalmology clinic with floaters and preserved visual acuity. Retrospective review of baseline ultrawidefield (UWF) imaging demonstrated a horseshoe retinal tear with localized macula-on temporal R

Adjuvant Anti-VEGF Therapy During Ablative Treatment for Coats Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjunctive intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy combined with standard ablative treatment in Coats disease. METHODS: A search of PubMed, Embase, and SCOPUS was conducted to identify studies comparing ablative therapy alone versus ablative therapy with anti-VEGF for Coats disease. Five studies (136 eyes treated with ablation alone and 82 with combination therapy) were included. Data on treatment sessions, quiescence, visual acuity (VA) and tractional retinal detachment (TRD) were extracted. RESULTS: Adjunctive anti

Retinal Granuloma Progression After Scleral Buckling in Ocular Toxocariasis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Toxocariasis has a wide geographic distribution, with high prevalence in tropical and subtropical regions. Ocular larva migrans is one of the most common manifestations in China and classically presents with peripheral granuloma, posterior granuloma, and chronic endophthalmitis. This report describes an atypical case of ocular toxocariasis in an adolescent male patient, initially misdiagnosed as chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. CASE REPORT A 17-year-old male patient presented to our hospital with a 4-month history of progressive vision loss in his right eye, initially misd

cGAS‑STING pathway in digestive tract cancer: From molecular mechanisms to therapeutic applications (Review).

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis (LPR) is a common inflammatory disorder of the nasal cavity in dogs due to unknown etiology. It is characterised by non-specific clinical signs, including nasal discharge, epistaxis and breathing problems. Diagnosis is usually based on the histopathologic identification of infiltrating plasmocytes and lymphocytes in the nasal mucosa and the exclusion of other underlying diseases. Treatment strategies include glucocorticoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and antifungal medications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Outcome domains are aspects of a condition that matter to patients and clinicians and can be measured to assess treatment effects. For tinnitus, examples include 'tinnitus loudness' and 'ability to concentrate'. This study focuses on the first stage of agreeing which outcome domains should be measured in all clinical trials of tinnitus. Crucially, it involves identifying outcome domains, prior to a voting process. This article describes how we effectively involved patients in that study design process, and reflects on the impact of their input. The study first compiled a

Histologic features of Lange's folds: implications for diagnosing retinal folds due to vitreoretinal traction in pediatric eyes.

To describe the histologic features of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) on Lange’s folds, compare them with perimacular retinal folds, and determine whether these features indicate vitreoretinal traction from ocular acceleration-deceleration (shaking) in suspected abusive head trauma or shaken baby syndrome. We performed a retrospective, single-center autopsy case series of fifteen neonates, infants, and young children with hemorrhagic retinopathy identified by postmortem indirect ophthalmoscopy (2016–2024). Histological evaluation focused on ILM attachment at retinal fold apices and separ

Lactoferrin concentration in breast milk during the first postpartum year in Lima Norte, Peru.

Bile duct injuries (BDI) tend to be more complex in laparoscopic than in open cholecystectomy procedures, and frequently involve young adults with benign pathologies. The ultimate consequence may be a liver transplantation (LT), making this situation one of the most rare transplant indications. Fatal post-transplant outcome is extreme infrequently reported. Aim of this study is to report on our single-case experience and to review the literature concerning lethal outcome after LT for major BDI following cholecystectomy. A 36-year old obese caucasian woman underwent a laparoscopic cholecystecto

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Ocular Biometric Changes Following Scleral Buckle Surgery for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

INTRODUCTION: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is separation of neurosensory retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium, due to full-thickness retinal breaks. Scleral Buckling (SB) is extraocular procedure done to reattach retina by counteracting vitreoretinal traction and altering globe's geometry. OBJECTIVE: To study various ocular changes and visual outcomes after buckling among patients of RRD. METHODOLOGY: A longitudinal observational study was conducted with prospective data collection in a tertiary health care centre from 2019 November to 2021 December after ethical clearance. It in

CASE SERIES OF PROGRESSIVE RETINAL DETACHMENTS IN PERSISTENT FETAL VASCULATURE.

PURPOSE: Persistent fetal vasculature may be associated with tractional retinal detachment due to tractional contraction of the fibrovascular stalk. Persistent fetal vasculature is often believed to be congenital and nonprogressive. A rhegmatogenous component is far less common and is typically identified as a postoperative complication and has not been spontaneously reported. The authors present five cases illustrating potential progressive changes and complications that may arise in nonoperated persistent fetal vasculature. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of five patients who
