Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that can affect almost every organ. This article describes a middle-aged woman, previously diagnosed with untreated SLE, who during a severe SLE flare simultaneously presented with a superior nasal artery occlusion in the right eye and a central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in the left eye. Severe ocular complications, such as CRAO, can occur during an acute flare of the disease in previously asymptomatic SLE.

BACKGROUND: In line with modern aesthetic principles, a prominent and voluminous auricle is considered to enhance facial structure by making it appear smaller and more refined. Recently, there has been a growing trend toward using injectable treatments as an alternative to traditional surgical procedures for correcting lying ears. This shift has led to an increase in reported complications associated with these interventions.
OBJECTS: This report aims to investigate the mechanisms leading to vision loss following hyaluronic acid (HA) injections in the ear and to propose preventive measures an

BACKGROUND: Bilateral retinal artery occlusion (RAO) in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an extremely rare condition. Even with rigorous treatment, RAO often results in devastating visual impairment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female with Type 2 diabetes mellitus was referred to our hospital. Notably, she developed bilateral RAO sequentially within a mere five-month period. This rapid progression of the disease in both eyes is of particular interest.
OBSERVATIONS: Fundus examination confirmed branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) in her left eye and central retinal artery occ

IMPORTANCE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common, chronic, cardiac arrythmia in older US adults. It is not known whether AF is independently associated with increased risk of retinal stroke (central retinal artery occlusion), a subtype of ischemic stroke that causes severely disabling visual loss in most cases and is a harbinger of further vascular events.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an association between AF and retinal stroke.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study was performed between July 2023 and May 2024 using computerized inpatient, out

BACKGROUND: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a retinal stroke with poor visual prognosis and frequent association with life-threatening conditions. Clinical guidelines and treatment options are in evolution, and Canadian data regarding CRAO are limited.
METHODS: Patients with CRAO between June 1, 2019, and May 31, 2023, were included. The medical chart was reviewed for demographics, presentation factors, investigations, interventions, secondary prevention referrals and outcomes.
RESULTS: Seventy-six patients were included. Median age was 68.1 (61.4-81.8) years, and 60.5% were male.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) results in severe visual impairment. Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is a potential treatment for CRAO, but ambiguous data regarding efficacy and the possibility that the presence of cerebral infarctions may increase the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) raise concerns. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the safety of IVT in patients with CRAO.
METHODS: This multi-center, international registry study included 66 patients with CRAO that presented within 4.5 h from symptom onset. Patients that received

Here, we describe a rare presentation of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) under benralizumab therapy manifesting as bilateral central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). The patient, a 61-year-old man with chronic eosinophilic rhinosinusitis and severe asthma, experienced sudden bilateral visual loss and transient amaurosis. Ophthalmologic evaluations, including a fundus examination and optical coherence tomography, confirmed CRAO, and laboratory test results revealed elevated markers of inflammation and positive antimyeloperoxidase antibodies in the context of normal eosinoph

RATIONALE: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an ophthalmologic emergency that, without prompt reperfusion, is associated with a high risk of permanent blindness. There is currently no evidence-based, effective treatment for CRAO.
METHODS AND DESIGN: TenCRAOS is an investigator-initiated, international, multicenter, randomized controlled, double-dummy, double-blind, phase III trial testing tenecteplase (TNK) 0.25 mg/kg + placebo versus acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) 300 mg + placebo. The target population is patients diagnosed with CRAO and a best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of ⩾1.0 lo

BACKGROUND: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a potentially blinding disease, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is becoming increasingly popular with the support of scientific evidence. Despite the presence of various acute management measures, there is no clear evidence on the gold standard treatment for CRAO.
AIM: To identify factors and imaging parameters associated with good visual outcome, which guide ophthalmologists in the triage of CRAO patients for HBOT.
METHODS: Patients who suffered from CRAO and had a symptom onset ≤ 6 h were recruited for a course of HBOT in a tertia

Painless vision loss presents a diagnostic conundrum for Emergency Medicine physicians, encompassing a spectrum of differential diagnoses ranging from benign to potentially serious conditions. Among these, Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO) stands out as a critical diagnosis requiring prompt recognition and intervention. In the Emergency Department, identifying CRAO poses a unique challenge due to its reliance on a fundoscopic examination, a procedure that may not be routinely performed by emergency physicians. This case series highlights the utility of Point-of-Care Ultrasound in aiding

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features and natural history of branch retinal artery ischemia (BRAI)-an uncommon condition where chronic, partial branch retinal artery obstruction (also known as partial BRAO) by a nonocclusive arterial plaque causes sectoral retinal ischemia and hemorrhages.
DESIGN: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study.
SUBJECTS: Thirteen patients diagnosed with BRAI between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2023.
METHODS: We identified patients with BRAI based on the presence of (1) a retinal arterial plaque, (2) sectoral round hemorrhages in the distribution of
