Purpose: Glaucoma, a neurodegenerative condition of the optic nerve is driven by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) due to fibrotic changes of the trabecular meshwork (TM). Interferon beta (IFN-β), a pleiotropic cytokine is known for its neuroprotective and antifibrotic potential. Hence, we investigated the intraocular status of IFN-β in patients with primary glaucoma. Methods: Aqueous humor (AqH) from patients with primary glaucoma [107 eyes; primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), 59 eyes; primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), 48 eyes] and controls (70 eyes) were collected during cataract sur

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors that may affect the onset of glaucoma in the unaffected, contralateral eye of dogs with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG).
ANIMAL STUDIED: One hundred and seventeen dogs unilaterally affected by PACG.
PROCEDURES: Multicenter retrospective study. Patient factors, examination findings, prophylactic treatments, and treatment failure dates were recorded. Treatment failure was defined as glaucoma onset in the contralateral eye (IOP > 25 mmHg); death prior to a second diagnosis was treated as a competing risk. Cumulative incidence plots and Cox proportional haza

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness and is characterized by optic nerve atrophy and progressive visual field loss. Risk prediction models are crucial for early screening and personalized treatment by identifying high-risk individuals for timely intervention. Recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence have improved prediction accuracy by integrating complex multivariable data. Models incorporating clinical factors, such as intraocular pressure, optic nerve head morphology, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and family history, as well as imaging and geno

PURPOSE: This study explored changes in retinal microvasculature in patients with Acute Primary Angle Closure (APAC) before and after surgery, assessing their correlation with variations in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, while also examining the effects of acute intraocular pressure elevation on ocular microvasculature.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective longitudinal study that assessed 22 APAC eyes undergoing phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, and trabeculectomy, along with 22 healthy fellow eyes. Optic

INTRODUCTION: The mechanism of primary angle closure disease (PACD) has been extensively investigated, while some cases remain unexplained. Hypothesizing that chronic primary ciliary block (CB) may play a role in PACD pathogenesis and the contribution could be revealed by pharmacologic cycloplegia and mydriasis, this study analyzed changes in anterior segment biometric parameters following cycloplegic intervention.
METHODS: A total of 170 eyes of 170 Chinese subjects aged between 50 and 80 years were included: 90 in the primary angle closure suspect (PACS) group, 33 in the primary angle closu

BACKGROUND: To analyze the poor mental status of patients with primary closed-angle glaucoma(PACG), and to explore the correlation between mental status and ocular and systemic indices in patients with PACG.
METHODS: We collected patients' axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL), cup-to-disc ratio (C/D), antinuclear antibody (ANA), toxoplasmosis antibody (anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM), and anxiety and depression scores (HAMA and HAMD scales). Statistical analysis was utilized to analyze the data for each of the patients in the PACG and cataract patien

PRÉCIS: The average cumulative 2-year cost following first primary angle closure glaucoma diagnosis was $2960. Elderly and Black patients were at higher risk of being among the costliest 5% (>$9813) of cases, accounting for 21.3% of costs.
PURPOSE: To assess longitudinal eye care costs associated with newly diagnosed primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) in the United States.
METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of PACG between 2009 and 2017 were identified in Optum's deidentified Clinformatics Data Mart Database based on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. Newly diagnosed PA

Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a major cause of irreversible blindness, characterized by shallow anterior chambers and narrow angles. In our study, we used anterior segment photographs from a modified mobile camera to develop algorithms for identifying narrow anterior chamber angles (NACA). We calculated eight biological parameters after preprocessing the images, segmenting the corneal and iris light bands, and modeling the central anterior chamber. In the training dataset, the accuracy of NACA identification using these parameters ranged from 0.68 to 0.85, with an AUC of 0.76 to 0.9

METHODS: Retrospective, cohort, multi-centre study. The primary outcome was surgical success during follow-up, defining complete success(CS) as intraocular pressure(IOP) 6-18 mmHg without reoperations and ≥20% IOP reduction without medications, and qualified success(QS) as IOP 6-18 mmHg without reoperations and either ≥1medication reduction or ≥20% IOP reduction on the same medications. PURPOSE: To identify associated long-term risk factors of visual field (VF) progression among eyes of primary angle-closure disease (PACD), including primary angle-closure suspect (PACS), primary angle-closure (PAC), and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG).
METHODS: PACD eyes with at least a 10-year follow-up duration were included. VF was tested every 6 months using the 24-2 pattern standard on the Humphrey Field Analyzer. The initial intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation and initial visual field index (VFI) slope were calculated based on the first-year follow-up data. Univariable and mul

Keratoconus is one of the most common forms of corneal ectasia. In severe cases, patients experience significant visual impairment, which can be further exacerbated by the development of cataracts. This deterioration may not only impact their vision but also affect their emotional well-being and mental health. Here, we report a case of a patient with severe keratoconus who underwent cataract surgery in both eyes, leading to a remarkable transformation in her life. An 80-year-old woman with underlying hypertension initially presented with bilateral blurring of vision and elevated intraocular pr

BACKGROUND: Patients with glaucoma demonstrate significantly elevated prevalence rates of anxiety and depression compared to healthy controls, although these psychiatric comorbidities remain frequently underrecognised in clinical practice. This study evaluated serum neuropeptide Y (NPY) concentrations in patients with primary glaucoma to investigate potential associations with anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QOL).
METHODS: The study cohort comprised 45 healthy controls and 89 patients with primary glaucoma, including 55 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 34 patient
