Prevalence of comorbidities with the potential to increase the risk of nonadherence to topical ocular hypotensive medication in patients with open-angle glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of comorbidities that may limit or prevent adherence to topical ocular hypotensive therapy in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). METHODS: The UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database of primary and secondary care and prescription records was analyzed to identify patients with a first (index) diagnosis of OAG during 2016-2020. The primary care records of these patients were screened for diagnostic terms linked to prespecified (qualifying) comorbidities considered to have the potential to impact patients' ability to instill eye drops. Pediatric corneal transplantation: techniques, challenges, and outcomes.

Pediatric corneal transplant is a highly demanding and technically challenging procedure for the cornea surgeon in today's era. These cases pose unique challenges in clinical and surgical management. The indications of pediatric corneal transplant can be therapeutic, tectonic, optical, and cosmetic. Pediatric patients undergoing corneal transplants are at a high risk of graft infection, failure, rejection, dehiscence, and amblyopia due to young age, robust immune system, increased incidence of trauma, and compliance issues. The other factors contributing to graft failure can be allograft rejec

Lunar lenses - Acquired lens colobomas.

Acquired lens colobomas secondary to ocular surgeries are scarcely described in the literature. We describe two cases of acquired lens coloboma in two infants with glaucoma who underwent ocular surgery. The coloboma in the first case was likely because of direct trauma to the lens zonules during an optical iridectomy with a vitrectomy cutter, resulting in localized loss of zonules and consequently localized lens coloboma. The coloboma in the second case was noticed during examination under anesthesia after scleral buckling and cryopexy for retinal detachment. The cause for coloboma development

Tetrapodal ZnO-Based Composite Stents for Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery.

The glaucoma burden increases continuously and is estimated to affect more than 100 million people by 2040. As there is currently no cure to restore the optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma, the only controllable parameter is the intraocular pressure (IOP). In recent years, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has emerged as an alternative to traditional treatments. It uses micro-sized drainage stents that are inserted through a small incision, minimizing the trauma to the tissue and reducing surgical and postoperative recovery time. However, a major challenge for MIGS devices is foreig

Differential Responses of Retinal Neurons and Glia Revealed via Proteomic Analysis on Primary and Secondary Retinal Ganglion Cell Degeneration.

To explore the temporal profile of retinal proteomes specific to primary and secondary retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss. Unilateral partial optic nerve transection (pONT) was performed on the temporal side of the rat optic nerve. Temporal and nasal retinal samples were collected at 1, 4 and 8 weeks after pONT (n = 4 each) for non-biased profiling with a high-resolution hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry running on label-free SWATHTM acquisition (SCIEX). An information-dependent acquisition ion library was generated using ProteinPilot 5.0 and OneOmics cloud bioinformatics. Combi

Patch endothelial keratoplasty for corneal perforations secondary to ocular surface disease: case series.

BACKGROUND: Corneal perforation is an ophthalmic emergency. The conventional management of corneal perforation can be associated with severe complications especially in patients with ocular surface disease. Endothelial keratoplasty has been suggested as an alternative surgical technique for the management of corneal perforations. We present a case series of nine patients with corneal perforation and ocular surface disease managed with secondary patch endothelial keratoplasty. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of nine patch endothelial keratoplasties performed between 2016 and 2022

Bilateral Angle Recession and Chronic Post-Traumatic Glaucoma: A Review of the Literature and a Case Report.

Ocular trauma affects millions of people worldwide and is a leading cause of secondary glaucoma. Angle recession is the main cause of post-traumatic glaucoma after blunt eye trauma, and it is usually unilateral. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possible causes of angle recession with a bilateral presentation. Airbag activation during traffic accidents is a likely cause to be ruled out, along with repeated head or eye trauma, due to contact sports or a history of physical abuse. These aspects can aid in early detection, appropriate management, and improved outcomes for patients with

Appropriate patient population for future visual system axon regeneration therapies.

A number of blinding diseases caused by damage to the optic nerve result in progressive vision loss or loss of visual acuity. Secondary glaucoma results from traumatic injuries, pseudoexfoliation or pigmentary dispersion syndrome. Progressive peripheral vision loss is common to all secondary glaucoma irrespective of the initial event. Axon regeneration is a potential therapeutic avenue to restore lost vision in these patients. In contrast to the usual approach of having the worst possible patient population for initial therapies, axon regeneration may require consideration of appropriate patie

The Risk of Sympathetic Ophthalmia Associated with Open-Globe Injury Management Strategies: A Meta-analysis.

TOPIC: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a sight-threatening granulomatous panuveitis caused by a sensitizing event. Primary enucleation or primary evisceration, versus primary repair, as a risk management strategy after open-globe injury (OGI) remains controversial. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This systematic review was conducted to report the incidence of SO after primary repair compared with that of after primary enucleation or primary evisceration. This enabled the reporting of an estimated number needed to treat. METHODS: Five journal databases were searched. This review was registered with Intern

From bench to clinic: Emerging therapies for corneal scarring.

Corneal diseases are one of the leading causes of moderate-to-severe visual impairment and blindness worldwide, after glaucoma, cataract, and retinal disease in overall importance. Given its tendency to affect people at a younger age than other blinding conditions such as cataract and glaucoma, corneal scarring poses a huge burden both on the individuals and society. Furthermore, corneal scarring and fibrosis disproportionately affects people in poorer and remote areas, making it a significant ophthalmic public health problem. Traditional medical strategies, such as topical corticosteroids, ar
