Ultrasound findings in a case of Eales' disease and ocular trauma with anterior chamber cholesterolosis.

BACKGROUND: Anterior chamber cholesterolosis is a rare phenomenon which occurs mostly in chronically blind eyes. We present the anterior and posterior ultrasound findings in a case of anterior chamber cholesterolosis secondary to Eales' disease and ocular trauma, which may contribute to the understanding of the potential mechanism of this phenomenon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old man presented with "sparking" right eye, which appeared soon after the ocular trauma. Both eyes were confirmed Eales' disease in our center 8 years ago, and right eye remained no light perception since then. Intra

Visual impairment and the prevalence of ocular pathology in homeless children and adults globally: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a global issue in developing and developed countries. This article is the first systematic review to explore its impact on visual health globally. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on OVID MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Peer-reviewed English-language studies with a focus on homeless children or adults that reported on ocular outcomes were included. Primary outcomes and secondary endpoints were reported via weighted averages. Primary outcomes between homeless children and homeless adults were compared using the Fisher exact test. RESULTS

Burkholderia cenocepacia keratitis.

A 33-year-old lady with history of failed keratoplasty for decompensated cornea due to childhood trauma and secondary glaucoma, post glaucoma drainage implant, with pseudophakia in the right eye, developed bacterial keratitis following foreign body trauma to corneal graft. Corneal cultures yielded Burkholderia cenocepacia identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF- MS, bioMerieux, France). She healed with topical antibiotics (moxifloxacin 0.5%) in 1 month. Ours is the first report of ocular Burkholderia cenocepacia infection, possibly

Bilateral Spontaneous Hyphema in Juvenile Xanthogranuloma: A Case Report.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is an idiopathic granulomatous inflammatory condition that usually affects children. Intraocular involvement, especially bilateral, is rare in JXG. Most patients with ocular lesions are typically infants and usually present with hyphema, iridocyclitis, and secondary glaucoma. We report a case of a 3-month-old baby girl who presented to our emergency department with bilateral hyphema that started 3 weeks ago. She was medically free with no history of any recent trauma or preceding febrile illness. General physical examination showed a quiet baby with multiple hype

Indirect choroidal neovascularization secondary to a posterior-segment intraocular foreign body - case report.

BACKGROUND: We reported a rare case of indirect choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to a posterior-segment intraocular foreign body (IOFB) that was not located in the area of direct injury but in the fovea. After intravitreal injections (IVIs) of aflibercept, the choroidal neovascularization (CNV) lesion disappeared and vision improved. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old male patient suffered from a fast-shot metallic IOFB in his right eye. He underwent primary corneal repair, pars plana vitrectomy, IOFB removal and an IVI of antibiotics in the right eye. Two weeks later, cataract surg

Nocardia endophthalmitis in a child: Distinct clinical and imaging features on orbital CT scan.

Nocardia is a rare cause of endophthalmitis in immunocompetent individuals with poor visual outcomes. We, herein report a 15 month otherwise healthy child, who presented with hyphema, vitreous hemorrhage and secondary glaucoma following a vague history of trauma in the left eye 2 months before presentation. He presented a week later with features of panophthalmitis which were confirmed on B-scan and orbital CT scan. CT scan with contrast revealed the presence of multiple ring enhancing abscesses in the vitreous cavity and also in the intraconal space. Evisceration was done and smear and cultur

Changes in intraocular pressure control in the first year after secondary intraocular lens implantation in children.

PURPOSE: To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) control before and during the first year after secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of children who received secondary IOL implantation. We analyzed IOP and antiglaucoma medications before and after implantation. The latest exam with IOP measurement found within the 2-15 month period after IOL implantation was used for the postoperative data. Failure to maintain IOP control was defined as either the addition of antiglaucoma medication(s) or a rise in IOP > 4 mm Hg. Statistical a

Eye care in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ocular complications in critical care patients are common. There has been a surge in intensive care admissions following the COVID-19 outbreak. The management of COVID-19 exposes patients to a number of specific risk factors for developing ocular complications, which include non-invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation and prone positioning. Consequently, it is likely that there will be an increase in the number of ocular complications secondary to the management of COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit setting, and these complications could lead to permanent visual loss and blindne

[Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty in complex eyes].

BACKGROUND: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) has become the standard surgical treatment for Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) in Germany. In addition to classical FECD, there are endothelial disorders amenable to DMEK associated with complex changes in the anterior segment of the eye, such as anterior synechia of the iris, larger iris defects, after glaucoma surgery, after vitrectomy and after trauma. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the possibilities to treat patients with complex anterior segment situations in the presence of corneal endothelial dec

[CHILDHOOD GLAUCOMA].

"Childhood glaucoma" is a heterogenic group of diseases, characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with optic-disc damage and other ocular comorbidities. Diagnosis requires two or more of the following: elevated IOP, optic nerve damage, enlarged cornea or Descemet's membrane ruptures, enlarged eye, high myopia and visual field defects. Childhood glaucoma is classified as primary if it occurs as an isolated ocular disease, and secondary, when the disease occurs along with other ocular anomalies or systemic diseases such as Neurofibromatosis and Sturge-Weber, or with acquir

Brittle cornea syndrome: Disease-causing mutations in ZNF469 and two novel variants identified in a patient followed for 26 years.

AIMS: Brittle cornea syndrome (BCS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. The aim of this study was to review ZNF469 mutations associated with BCS type 1 to date and to describe an additional case of Czech/Polish background. METHODS: Whole genome sequencing was undertaken to identify the molecular genetic cause of disease in the proband. Sequence variants in ZNF469 previously reported as BCS type 1-causing were searched in the literature, manually curated and aligned to the reference sequence NM_001127464.2. RESULTS: The proband has been reviewed since childhood with progressive myopia and
