BACKGROUND: Inflammatory glaucoma is still a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma and surgical intervention is always associated with a high risk of failure or reactivation of the inflammatory disease. A case of spontaneous absorption of a cataractous lens is presented. A 37-year-old woman with Down's syndrome presented with bilateral cataracts. On follow-up, the cataract in her right eye was found to be absorbed with no secondary uveitis or glaucoma. Surgical capsulotomy was performed on the remnant anterior and posterior capsules. Such absorption is known in juveniles and in hypermature cataract, but is rare in adults in the absence of injury or inflammation. Absorption occurred over a period of one year.

Leaking blebs may be encountered in the early postoperative period, or months to years after filtering surgery. PURPOSE: To determine the long-term success rate after trabeculectomy without antimetabolites in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: Review of data from all patients with uveitis who underwent trabeculectomy for uncontrolled intraocular pressure secondary to intraocular inflammation between May 1990 and December 1994. Results were compared with those from a group of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma matched for sex and surgeon.
RESULTS: The uveitis group consisted of 32 eyes (20 patients). Maximum control of intraocular inflammation was achieved for a minimum of 2 months before surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the suitability and safety of a black diaphragm posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL).
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, United Kingdom.
METHODS: Seven patients who had secondary implantation of a Morcher 67G black diaphragm posterior chamber IOL were identified. All patients were men with a mean age of 42 years who had previous ocular trauma resulting in extensive loss of iris tissue (traumatic aniridia). PURPOSE: To determine if measurement of lens protein in serum is a feasible means to gain information on the physiologic status of the lens in human subjects.
METHODS: The gamma-crystallin concentration was measured by a sandwich radioimmunoassay in the sera of 280 subjects aged 25-94 years. Medical records were reviewed for diagnoses of cataract and aphakia.
