Impact of SGLT2 inhibitors on the risk of age-related ocular diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A target trial emulation study.

AIMS: Chronic ocular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are leading causes of vision loss in older adults. While sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are widely prescribed in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), their effects on ocular disease risk remain largely unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the association between SGLT2i use and the risk of AMD and other age-related ocular conditions in adults aged ≥60 with T2DM, using a target trial emulation framework based on the TriNetX global health research n

Neovascular glaucoma associated with central retinal vein occlusion in a young patient with hyperlipidemia.

This case report presents a rare instance of neovascular glaucoma secondary to central retinal vein occlusion in a previously healthy man in his early 30s who exhibited acute unilateral vision loss, ocular pain, and elevated intraocular pressure. Ophthalmic imaging, including ultra-widefield fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, revealed retinal hemorrhages, intraretinal fluid, and iris neovascularization consistent with ischemic central retinal vein occlusion and secondary neovascular glaucoma. Notably, systemic evaluation revealed severe hyperlipidemia associated with the pati

Updates in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma: From conventional approaches to novel therapies.

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a severe and refractory form of secondary glaucoma characterized by the proliferation of abnormal vessels in the anterior segment, leading to a progressive rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic nerve damage. It is most commonly associated with ischemic retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion, and ocular ischemic syndrome. This review aims to provide an updated overview of the current management strategies for NVG, including recent advancements in medical, laser, and surgical treatment modalities. While anti-vascular e

Efficacy of Canaloplasty for the Management of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma forms the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with a disproportionately rising prevalence in Asian and African countries. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) accounts for the majority of cases. Medical therapies for POAG are not without side effects, and surgical treatments carry high complication rates. Ab interno canaloplasty promises a safer, minimally invasive, yet effective treatment option for mild-to-moderate POAG, as well as a cost-effective technique for low-resource countries. However, no systematic review currently exists to verify this procedure's

Prognostic factors associated with progression of open-angle glaucoma in adults.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, and the second leading cause of blindness in high-income countries. It is a chronic optic nerve disease that can lead to loss of vision, although it is usually asymptomatic until it progresses (worsens) to an advanced stage. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma, and it is recognized as a multifactorial disorder. Pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXFG) is a common form of secondary open-angle glaucoma and has a higher rate of progression. The understanding of prognostic factors is useful fo

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists: What ophthalmologists need to know.

Initially designed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) are multifaceted agents with promising neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. The majority of the research exploring the relationship between GLP-1RA use and ophthalmic disease comes from large database studies or secondary-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigating GLP-1RAs in cardiovascular disease and obesity. Current evidence regarding the impact of GLP-1 receptor agonists on ophthalmic diseases remains inconsistent, with studies reporting both protective and
