OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the development of cataract and the results of cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with chronic uveitis associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A hospital-based retrospective case series consisted of 25 patients with JIA-associated uveitis. The mean age of the patients was 5.8 years at the onset of arthritis and 6.8 years at the onset of uveitis. We report surgical removal of a droplet of intraocular chloramphenicol ointment in a 70-year-old man who had routine small-incision phacoemulsification. A spherical droplet of ointment adherent to the intraocular lens was noted 2 months postoperatively. The source was considered to be the immediate postoperative conjunctival fornix chloramphenicol ointment. Gonioscopy revealed tiny droplets adherent to the peripheral iris and angle. BACKGROUND: In glaucoma eyes in which the pressure regulation was not possible with drugs and surgery or which were blind already, we treated the patients with a Molteno implant by von Denffer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 10 years (1995 to 2004) we treated 19 eyes with a glaucoma drainage device -- the Molteno implant developed by von Denffer.
