Relationship Between Parapapillary Microvasculature Dropout and Visual Field Defect in Glaucoma: A Cross-Sectional OCTA Analysis.

Background: Glaucoma is a multifactorial optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Vascular mechanisms, including impaired perfusion of the optic nerve head, are increasingly recognized as contributors to disease progression. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables non-invasive assessment of retinal and choroidal microvasculature, including peripapillary microvasculature dropout (MvD), which may serve as a marker of glaucomatous damage. Methods: A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted, including patients with primary open-angle glauc

Rodent Models of Glaucoma: How Mice and Rats Can Help Human Vision Move Out of the Woods and Into the Light.

Glaucoma represents a social and economic burden due to both its increasing incidence and the lack of knowledge about its physiopathology and treatment strategies. The main factor hindering progress in glaucoma research is the disease's heterogeneity, which depends on both genetic and environmental factors. This limitation directly affects glaucoma research, posing obstacles to the elucidation of risk factors, disease mechanisms, and treatment strategies. Therefore, the need emerges to integrate pre-clinical experimental observations from different experimental models to recapitulate different

Performance and Safety of Minimally Invasive Nasal Trabeculostomy (MINT™) in Open-Angle Glaucoma: A 12-month Open-Label Study on Patients with No Other Glaucoma Surgeries.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive nasal trabeculostomy (MINT™) is an ab interno, stent-less, trabecular-opening glaucoma procedure designed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). This 12-month, prospective, single-arm, open-label study aimed to evaluate the performance and safety of the MINT device in patients with OAG with uncontrolled IOP. METHODS: Eligible patients had uncontrolled OAG (IOP ≥21 mmHg with maximum tolerated glaucoma medications). The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving ≥20% IOP reduction from baseline on the

Comparison of intraocular pressure fluctuation and glaucoma progression rate between phakic and pseudophakic eyes in pseudoexfoliation glaucoma.

The management of patients with concurrent pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) and cataract is challenging given its worse prognosis compared to other glaucoma types and the increased risk associated with cataract surgery. In this retrospective study, we investigated the long-term outcomes of cataract surgery in patients with PXG. We enrolled patients with PXG who had undergone cataract surgery at least 2 years previously and compared them with mean deviation (MD) matched patients with phakic eyes. The results showed that both groups experienced a decrease in MD, with the group of pseudophakic ey

Minimally Invasive Bleb Surgery for Glaucoma: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the term for a group of eye disorders that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to visual impairment and, potentially, irreversible blindness. Minimally invasive bleb surgery (MIBS) reduces eye pressure through the implantation of a device that creates a new subconjunctival outflow pathway for eye fluid drainage. MIBS is a less invasive alternative to conventional/incisional glaucoma surgery (e.g., trabeculectomy). We conducted a health technology assessment of MIBS for people with glaucoma, which included an evaluation of effectiveness, safety,

Peripheral Blood B-Cell Subsets Frequency and Distribution and the BSF-2(IL-6) to CSIF:TGIF(IL-10) Ratio as Severity-Associated Signatures in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Case-Controlled Study.

UNLABELLED: Although primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a major cause of blindness worldwide, patients' immune response and its relation to the disease course have not been fully unraveled in terms of analyses of circulating B-cell subsets, as well as the association of these subsets with the severity of POAG clinical features. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Flow cytometry was used to determine B-cell subset frequencies from 30 POAG patients grouped by hierarchical cluster analysis or the mean deviation (MD) of the visual field (VF) and correlated with the patients' clinical and pathological data,

TLR4 deficiency does not alter glaucomatous progression in a mouse model of chronic glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a pattern-recognition transmembrane receptor that induces neuroinflammatory processes in response to injury. Tlr4 is highly expressed in ocular tissues and is known to modulate inflammatory processes in both anterior and posterior segment tissues. TLR4 activation can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic deficits in inflammatory disorders. Due to its effects on inflammation and metabolism, TLR4 is a candidate to participate in glaucoma pathogenesis. It has been suggested as a therapeutic t

Potential Involvements of Anterior Segment Dysgenesis-Associated Genes in Primary Congenital Glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: The anterior segment of the eye plays a crucial role in maintaining the normal intraocular pressure and vision. Developmental defects in the anterior segment structures lead to anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD) and primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), which share overlapping clinical features. Several genes have been mapped and characterized in ASD, some of which are also involved in other glaucoma phenotypes. PCG exhibits genetic heterogeneity like ASD, but the known genes do not account for the entire genetic basis of the disease. Considering the significant phenotypic and genotypi

Racial and Gender Disparities for Glaucoma Treatment Rates in Upstate New York.

Introduction: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness around the world. Black individuals are two times more likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma compared to White individuals. In 2019, the prevalence of glaucoma in Monroe County was highest amongst older individuals aged 85 and non-Hispanic Blacks. This study seeks to explore differences in glaucoma treatment rates that may be exacerbating disease severity and prognosis for individuals most acutely affected by glaucoma in Monroe County, NY. Methods: We used data from the Center for Disease Control's National Vision and

Systematic Literature Review of Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Outcomes Following Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty for the Treatment of Open-Angle Glaucoma with or Without Cataract Extraction.

INTRODUCTION: Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) are increasingly used options for mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma (OAG) care. While most MIGS devices are indicated for use in combination with cataract surgery only, with phacoemulsification playing a role in lowering IOP, newer technologies can also be used as standalone glaucoma surgery. METHODS: This systematic literature review (SLR) aimed to assess the clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes of MIGS and SLT for the treatment of OAG and was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines.

Topical Application of Bunazosin Hydrochloride Suppresses Myopia Progression With an Increase in Choroidal Blood Perfusion.

PURPOSE: The incidence of myopia has rapidly increased in recent decades, making it a growing public health concern worldwide. Interventions to suppress the progression of myopia are needed; one suggested strategy is the prevention of choroidal thinning, which can improve choroidal blood perfusion (ChBP). Bunazosin hydrochloride (BH) is an alpha1-adrenergic blocker and commercialized glaucoma eye drop that increases in blood circulation in the eye. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of BH in suppressing the progression of myopia in a lens-induced murine model. METHODS: Lens-induced myop
