Dislocation of the PreserFlo MicroShunt During a Postsurgical Needling Procedure.

We report a case of PreserFlo MicroShunt (PFM) dislocation following a postsurgical needling procedure. A 58-year-old woman underwent PFM implantation for exfoliation glaucoma in her left eye (OS). There were no intraoperative complications. Preoperatively, her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.6, and her intraocular pressure (IOP) was 25 mmHg with three antiglaucoma medications in the OS. On postoperative day 21, the IOP was 21 mmHg OS, and the filtration bleb had shrunk. A needling procedure was performed using a sharp 26-gauge needle to lower the IOP. On postoperative day 29, the BC

Association of Smoking Patterns with Vision-Related Disability According to Glaucoma Subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between smoking and onset of glaucoma has been inconsistent. However, there is a gap in understanding whether tobacco smoking is linked to a worse visual impairment in different glaucoma subtypes. The objective of this study was to examine the association between smoking behavior and vision-related disability in people who have different glaucoma subtypes. METHODS: A total of 283 people with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and pseudo-exfoliative (PEX) were included in this cross-sectional stu

Topical ophthalmic beta-blockers are associated with ocular pseudopemphigoid: A pharmacovigilance study of antiglaucoma medications utilising the FDA adverse event reporting system.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The association between antiglaucoma medications and the development of ocular pseudopemphigoid (OPP) has been described; however, the independent risk of each medication has not been quantified. METHODS: Case/non-case analyses were performed in the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) using data from 2010-2020 to examine the reporting odds ratio (ROR) signal for OPP for all classes of antiglaucoma medications under multiple conditions: (i) comparison to all other drugs in FAERs, (ii) comparison to other antiglaucoma medications, (iii) comparison to vehicle/hydrat

Background polygenic risk modulates the association between glaucoma and cardiopulmonary diseases and measures: an analysis from the UK Biobank.

AIMS: To assess whether associations of cardiopulmonary conditions and markers with glaucoma differ by background genetic risk for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: We constructed a POAG polygenic risk score (PRS) using genome-wide association study summary statistics from a large cross-ancestry meta-analysis. History of glaucoma (including self-report and codes for POAG, 'other glaucoma' or unspecified glaucoma), history of common cardiopulmonary conditions and cardiopulmonary measures were assessed in the UK Biobank. Stratifying by PRS decile 1 (lowest risk) versus decile 10 (hig

Rho kinase inhibitor for primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathies characterized by progressive degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells, axonal loss and irreversible visual field defects. Glaucoma is classified as primary or secondary, and worldwide, primary glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Several subtypes of glaucoma exist, and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common. The etiology of POAG is unknown, but current treatments aim to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), thus preventing the onset and progression of the disease. Compared with traditional antiglaucomatous tr

Glaucoma and cognitive function trajectories in a population-based study: Findings from the health and retirement study.

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies on the association of glaucoma and cognitive function have reported mixed results. METHODS: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a nationally representative panel survey of Americans age ≥ 51 years. HRS-linked Medicare claims data were used to identify incident glaucoma cases (by glaucoma type). Cognitive function was measured using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS), administered in each wave (every 2 years). Separate linear mixed models were fitted with either prevalent or incident glaucoma as a predictor of TICS trajectories and adjusting fo

Detection of Nonglaucomatous Macula Findings With Ganglion Cell Analysis Printouts vs Full Macular Cube Scans.

IMPORTANCE: Ganglion cell analysis (GCA) of ocular coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is routinely used to detect and monitor glaucomatous damage of the ganglion cell complex in the macula. The GCA printout provides qualitative and quantitative data about the macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer and a single B-scan of the retina through the fovea. However, the full macular cube scan, including all 128 B-scans, is available for review. The macular cube scan provides considerable information about nonglaucomatous ocular pathology that may be missed if clinicians review only the GCA printo
