Eye injury and demographic parameters associated with poor visual outcome.

BACKGROUND: Eye injuries can result in long-term disability, and healthcare providers need better tools to predict outcomes. Few prognostic models for poor visual acuity have been examined using variables usually present in very severe injuries, which creates a gap in prognosis. Therefore, a model associated with severe and less severe injuries is examined. METHODS: Eye injuries hospitalized in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2006 through 2014 were included. A total of 258 eye injuries met the inclusion criteria of being an acute mechanical, chemical or physical eye injury. Prognostic variables w

Scleral avulsion after Ahmed valve M4 removal.

We report a case of intraoperative scleral avulsion that occurred during explantation of an Ahmed M4 valve. A 79-year-old female with open angle glaucoma with a history of glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation presented for routine follow-up. The ophthalmic examination indicated a focal implant exposure. The patient was scheduled for explanation of tube and plate and placement of alternate GDD. During implant removal, a horse-shoe shaped scleral avulsion was noted with softening of the globe and uveal and vitreous prolapse. The case was converted to an open globe repair and further glauc

Influence of an intentionally induced posterior lens capsule rupture on the real-time intraocular pressure during phacoemulsification in canine ex vivo eyes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes in the intraocular pressure (IOP) following an intentionally induced posterior lens capsule rupture (PLCR) during phacoemulsification in enucleated canine eyes. Furthermore, to compare the IOPs between different stages of phacoemulsification for two different bottle heights (BH). PROCEDURES: Coaxial phacoemulsification was performed using a venturi-based machine at a 60 or 90 cm BH. A pressure transducer, inserted into the anterior chamber through the peripheral cornea, monitored real-time IOP. For one half of the lens, the sculpt-segment removal (SS) was fo

[CATARACT SURGERY COMPLICATIONS IN MALES TREATED WITH ALPHA-1 ANTAGONISTS FOR BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA].

Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) was first described by Chang and Campbell in 2005. The characteristics of this syndrome include: 1. Floppy iris that billows in reaction to intraocular fluid currents during standard phacoemulsification procedure; 2. Flaccid iris stroma that tends to prolapse through well-constructed surgical incisions; 3. Insufficient pupillary mydriasis despite proper pharmacologic preparation and progressive pupillary constriction during the operation. Surgical procedures with IFIS have since been noted to have an exceptionally high rate of complications, some of w

Serous retinal detachment after trabeculectomy in angle recession glaucoma.

An 18-year-old male with 360 degree angle recession after blunt trauma in his right eye developed uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) despite four antiglaucoma medications (AGM) with advancing disc damage. He underwent trabeculectomy with intraoperative mitomycin-c (MMC) application. There was an intraoperative vitreous prolapse which was managed accordingly. On post-surgery day 1, he had shallow choroidal detachment superiorly with non-recordable IOP. This was deteriorated 1 week postoperatively as choroidal detachment proceeded to serous retinal detachment. He was started with systemic s
