A rare case of aphakia associated with anterior segment malformation in a cocker spaniel puppy.

This report describes a rare case of bilateral congenital aphakia with anterior segment malformation in a 12-week-old male cocker spaniel puppy. The puppy was initially suspected of having glaucoma and was subsequently diagnosed with anterior segment dysgenesis and aphakia resulting in blindness. Ophthalmic examination showed corneal opacity, absence of pupillary openings, and negative pupillary light reflexes. B-mode and high-frequency ultrasonography showed absence of the lens, poorly defined anterior chambers, and hyperechoic tissue adherent to the cornea, consistent with anterior segment d

Interocular symmetry of ocular rigidity and related ocular parameters in isometropia.

PURPOSE: Driven by scleral stiffness, ocular rigidity (OR) is emerging as a critical factor in refractive development. Although a common assumption is that OR is symmetric in a healthy individual's eyes, empirical data remains scarce. This study directly tests this assumption by quantifying intereye OR differences in healthy, isometropic subjects. METHODS: Isometropia was defined as intereye differences in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of <0.50 diopters (D) and axial length (AL) of <0.15 mm. OR was measured using a validated method based on video-rate optical coherence tomography imag

Under the magnifying glass: a wave of drug price transparency.

OBJECTIVES: Underserved populations often have difficulty accessing care for diabetic eye disease, including screening, referral, and treatment. Although barriers to diabetes care management have been well documented, less is understood about barriers specific to rural and underserved populations. In this study, we interviewed health care professionals to identify barriers to and facilitators of screening for diabetic eye disease and specialty care among underserved patients in Alabama. METHODS: We conducted 12 semistructured interviews with experts in ophthalmology, diabetes care management,

Epithelium-on Corneal Cross-linking Using a Modified Penetration Enhancer Without Supplemental Oxygen or Iontophoresis.

PURPOSE: To present the 1-year results of a novel epitheliumon corneal cross-linking (epi-on CXL) protocol for the treatment of progressive keratoconus that does not require supplemental oxygen or iontophoresis and that involves the use of a modified penetration enhancer solution to enable riboflavin to saturate the corneal stroma transepithelially. METHODS: Thirty-eight eyes from 29 patients with progressive keratoconus were included. Patients were treated with epi-on CXL using accelerated pulsed high-fluence ultraviolet-A irradiation. The main outcome measures included the thinnest corneal

Rod photoreceptors have a dual dependency on both aerobic glycolysis and OXPHOS and diverge metabolically from other retinal neurons.

The retina metabolizes glucose into lactate, a hallmark of aerobic glycolysis known as the Warburg effect. Although evidence points to rod photoreceptors as the primary source of aerobic glycolysis, a comparison of the energy metabolism in different retinal neurons has yet to be performed. We combined two-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging of biosensors with pharmacological protocols to analyze metabolic dynamics in healthy and diseased rod photoreceptors and RBPMS-positive ganglion and calretinin-positive amacrine cells. Our data reveal distinct metabolic profiles among retinal neurons, ide

Evaluating the effect of spectacle correction for refractive errors and presbyopia on cognitive function in rural older adults in China: protocol for a randomised, parallel-group, superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Vision impairment and mild cognitive impairment are highly prevalent in ageing rural populations of low- and middle-income countries. Observational studies suggest that vision correction may slow cognitive decline, but robust causal evidence-particularly from rural China-is lacking, despite an ongoing randomised controlled trial (RCT) in India. Our RCT will evaluate whether providing near and/or distance vision correction can slow cognitive decline among older adults in rural China, generating context-specific evidence to guide national policy and global healthy ageing strategies.

Time to improve laboratory protocols in microbial keratitis: broad-range Internal Transcribed Spacer sequencing in refractory culture-negative keratitis.

A woman in her 60s who was a soft contact lens wearer presented with rapidly progressive microbial keratitis unresponsive to intensive empirical therapy. Despite extensive investigations - including conventional cultures, impression cytology, in vivo imaging, and repeated targeted PCR from corneal and aqueous samples - the aetiology remained unclear, with all tests persistently negative. Progressive inflammation, enlarging hypopyon, stromal melt and rising intraocular pressure necessitated anterior chamber (AC) washout followed by therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty with extracapsular catarac

Subcortical correlates of sleep in aging and Alzheimer's disease: an in vivo study.

Sleep disturbances are frequently observed in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, but in vivo evidence linking subcortical sleep-wake structures to sleep phenotypes is limited. We aim to examine associations between MRI-derived measures of subcortical sleep-wake regulating regions and polysomnographic sleep parameters in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and cognitively healthy controls. Fifty-seven adults (45 with biomarker-confirmed Alzheimer's disease and 12 cognitively healthy controls with normal pTau217 plasma levels) were recruited at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. All parti

Factors associated with diabetic retinopathy: a cross-sectional study of 1477 patients across four cities in Anhui, China.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. With the rising prevalence of diabetes, the burden of DR continues to escalate, substantially impairing patients' quality of life. Identifying clinical factors associated with prevalent DR may help refine risk-based ophthalmic assessment. Using a large cross-sectional dataset, this study examined associations between routinely available clinical indicators and the presence of DR. Particular attention was given to heart rate (HR), an understudied and readily available vital sign, and to diabet

Spontaneous organ-specific eye autoimmune disease resulting from two engineered gene mutations compromising immune tolerance.

In order to address the question of how genetic compromises in multiple immune tolerance mechanisms might confer susceptibility to autoimmune disease development, we have bred together a partial loss of function in Aire, which is important for central tolerance of T cells, with a deficiency of the intracellular protein tyrosine kinase Lyn, which is important for function of inhibitory receptors of dendritic cells, B lymphocytes, and myeloid cells. These AireGW/+Lyn-/- mice spontaneously develop severe eye autoimmunity, characterized by retinal destruction and damage to the surrounding uvea, re

Healthcare professionals' experiences of providing care for patients with Graves' disease: a qualitative interview study in Swedish secondary care.

OBJECTIVE: Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune thyroid disease, mainly affecting women of working age. The hyperthyroidism in GD is characterised by physical symptoms (tachycardia, weight loss, sweating and tremors) as well as cognitive and psychological problems that have a major impact on the daily lives of patients. Mental symptoms are particularly distressing, with patients expressing a desire for more communication and support for the mental aspects of their care. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of healthcare professionals (HCPs) when providing care and treatment to

Dopamine suppresses pathological retinal oscillations and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio.

Infantile nystagmus is a debilitating involuntary eye movement disorder often associated with retinal diseases such as congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB). The oscillating eye movements of infantile nystagmus come with reduced visual acuity and strongly impair quality of life. No cure exists for this condition. Previously, we demonstrated that nystagmus in the CSNB mouse model Nyxnob has a retinal cause. Specifically, we found that synchronized oscillations of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are transmitted to the accessory optic system, triggering compensatory eye movements. The RGC os

Regeneration and Cancer-The Two Sides of a "Stem Cell" Coin: The 2025 Mildred Weisenfeld Award Lecture.

Stem cells endowed with properties of self-renewal and differentiation have opened new avenues for restoration and regeneration of damaged tissues. The same adult stem cells, when they undergo irreversible mutations, transform into cancer cells and generate a tumor. In this lecture, I present our work on these two aspects of stem cells: one focuses on regeneration of the ocular surface, whereas the other targets cancer stem cells (CSCs) in retinoblastoma (Rb). In regeneration, I present our experience of transplantation of the cultured limbal epithelial cells to restore the ocular surface in s
