Risk of transmission of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by surgical procedures: systematic reviews and quality of evidence.

BACKGROUND: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is potentially transmissible to humans. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to summarise and rate the quality of the evidence of the association between surgery and sCJD. DESIGN AND METHODS: Firstly, we conducted systematic reviews and meta-analyses of case-control studies with major surgical procedures as exposures under study. To assess quality of evidence, we used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Secondly, we conducted a systematic review of sCJD case reports after sharing neurosurgical

Amblyopia Associated with Congenital Facial Nerve Paralysis.

The association between congenital facial paralysis and visual development has not been thoroughly studied. Of 27 pediatric cases of congenital facial paralysis, we identified 3 patients who developed amblyopia, a visual acuity decrease caused by abnormal visual development, as comorbidity. These 3 patients had facial paralysis in the periocular region and developed amblyopia on the paralyzed side. They started treatment by wearing an eye patch immediately after diagnosis and before the critical visual developmental period; all patients responded to the treatment. Our findings suggest that the

Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in a low income country: The Haitian experience.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known regarding the diagnosis and management of pediatric surgical conditions of the head and neck in low-income countries. Haiti, the western hemisphere's poorest country, recently developed its first Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) department at the Hopital de L'Universite d'Etat d'Haiti (HUEH). This manuscript assesses the caseload at HUEH with a special emphasis on pediatric cases, with the aim of characterizing ORL related conditions and their treatments in low-income countries. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of surgical case logs at HUEH for the calend

Sporadic occurrence of non-diagnosed IgG4-related disease in lymphoma patients with a previous Sjögren's syndrome diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a recently recognized fibro-inflammatory disorder, which may affect many organs, and often comes to clinical attention due to tumor-like organ swelling or is identified incidentally by specific biopsy findings. Typical histopathology of IgG4-RD is lymphoplasmacytic infiltration rich in IgG4 + plasma cells (PCs), storiform fibrosis, and obliterative phlebitis. Patients with sicca symptoms can be misdiagnosed as primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) instead of IgG4-RD because of clinical and histopathological similarities. Moreover, an association with ly

Prevalence of Mental Health Illness among Patients with Adult-Onset Strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with some forms of strabismus were recently found to have an increased risk of developing mental illness by early adulthood. The purpose of this case-controlled study was to determine if adults with non-paralytic forms of strabismus are similarly at an elevated risk for developing mental illness. METHODS: The medical records of all patients diagnosed as adults (≥ 19 years of age) with convergence insufficiency (CI) (n = 118), divergence insufficiency (DI) (n = 80), and small angle hypertropia (HT (n = 99) from January 1, 1985, through December 31, 2004, were ret

Funding flows to global surgery: an analysis of contributions from the USA.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, funds for global health have risen substantially, particularly for infectious diseases. Although conditions amenable to surgery account for 28% of the global burden of disease, the external funds directed towards global surgical delivery, capacity building, and research are currently unknown and presumed to be low. We aimed to describe external funds given to these efforts from the USA, the world's largest donor nation. METHODS: We searched the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), National Institute of Health (NIH), Foundation Center, and re

Cellular neurothekeoma of the eyelid: a unique internal palpebral presentation.

A 50-year-old woman presented with a mass lesion of the inferolateral palpebral conjunctiva similar in appearance to a chalazion, but unusual enough in presentation that excisional biopsy was initially performed. Histopathologic analysis revealed a dermal fibrohistiocytic neoplasm consistent with cellular neurothekeoma. Neurothekeoma is a benign tumor; the cellular variant is rare and of unclear histogenesis. Completely internal eyelid location is particularly rare, with other identifiable case reports of cellular neurothekeoma palpebrae referring to external or unspecified eyelid location. Th
