Finite Element Analysis of Extraocular Muscle and Adipose-Dominant Pathogenesis in Thyroid Eye Disease With Clinical Implications.

PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical mechanisms of muscle-predominant and adipose-predominant thyroid eye disease (TED) using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) model and validate findings through clinical outcomes. METHODS: A 3D orbital FEA model was reconstructed from healthy computed tomography imaging. Extraocular muscle hypertrophy and adipose proliferation were simulated under fixed volumetric expansion. Optic nerve (ON) stress and globe displacement were measured across six simulation groups. For clinical validation, 36 patients with TED were retrospectively catego

Atypical mechanisms of visual statistical learning in children with developmental language disorder: An fMRI study.

Symptoms of developmental language disorder (DLD) may in part result from an underlying deficit in statistical learning (SL). This learning deficit may be related to the ability to extract probabilistic properties of events in the environment, which is linked to the functions of cortical and subcortical brain regions underlying SL. Using a behavioral SL task and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we tested sequential SL ability in the visual domain and its neural correlates in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers. During fMRI, children performed SL tasks invol

Seeing more than schemas: the vmPFC represents imagery-rich mental scenarios.

Mental imagery varies dramatically across individuals, from vivid scene construction to the complete absence of visual experience, as seen in aphantasia. While the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is traditionally associated with abstract, schematic representations, emerging theories suggest it also contributes to constructing perceptually rich, temporally extended mental scenarios. To test this, we developed a 7T fMRI experiment that varied imagery demands across conditions: participants memorized richly detailed scenarios, more constrained stationary objects, and semantic definitions f

Serum NfL predicts visual recovery and neuronal loss after optic neuritis.

Optic neuritis, a common manifestation of multiple sclerosis, involves acute axonal injury and variable visual recovery. We evaluated whether serum neurofilament light chain predicts visual and structural outcomes after first-episode optic neuritis. Fifty-one patients (mean age = 33 years, 71% women) were followed for 24 ± 6 months with low-contrast letter acuity testing and optical coherence tomography. Adjusting for age and sex, higher baseline serum neurofilament light chain predicted greater inter-eye differences in retinal nerve fibre layer (-4.65 µm per SD, p = 0.02), ganglion cell/inner

MRI Characteristics of Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody-Associated Disease: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a demyelinating disease distinct from multiple sclerosis (MS) and aquaporin-4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4+NMOSD). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is central to confirming attacks, defining lesion distribution, and excluding alternative diagnoses and is a key component of the 2023 MOGAD diagnostic criteria. However, its imaging spectrum and lesion evolution remain underrecognized in practice, and variability in imaging parameters can contribute to delayed diagnosis and subo

Effects of Pre-MRI Multimodal Psychosocial Nursing Intervention on Anxiety and Examination Compliance in Patients With Optic Neuritis.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for diagnosing and monitoring optic neuritis. However, the procedure itself may induce significant anxiety in patients, potentially compromising examination compliance and image quality. This study retrospectively evaluated the effects of a structured, multimodal pre-MRI psychosocial nursing intervention on anxiety and compliance in patients with optic neuritis. METHODS: A total of 106 patients diagnosed with optic neuritis who underwent MRI at Jiaozhou Central Hospital of Qingdao between June 2021 and June 2024 were included. Pat

The Salience of Psychotic Experiences: Neural Correlates in the General Population.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Psychotic experiences (PEs) frequently occur at a subclinical level in the general population, including symptoms like hallucination and delusion. An important hypothesis is the aberrant salience hypothesis, according to which the salience network (SN) plays a decisive role coordinating between inner and outer world, anchored in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and anterior insula (AI). Given SN's central role in PE development and maintenance, investigating its functional connectivity (FC) in a population-based sample is critical for understanding its eti

Region-specific variations in the cerebrovasculature underlie disease progression in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction, dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein Lewy bodies. Research suggests that the cerebrovascular system plays a role in fluid dynamics, waste clearance and removal of abnormal proteins. Imaging studies show that this waste clearance system, known as the glymphatic system, is disrupted in Parkinson's disease, highlighting its involvement in the disease. This immunohistochemical human brain tissue study quantified changes in the cerebrovascular sy

Altered long-range visual hierarchical connectivity in internet gaming disorder: reduced V1-LOC connectivity and its association with addiction severity.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies of internet gaming disorder (IGD) have primarily focused on reward-related and executive-control networks. However, sensory processing of addiction-related cues, particularly visual processing, may also contribute to IGD. Whether the intrinsic hierarchical organization of the visual system is altered remains unclear. METHODS: The study included 35 individuals with IGD and 30 healthy controls (HCs), with an overall age range of 9-33 years. The sample was predominantly composed of adolescents. An a priori three-level visual hierarchy model comprising the primary

Source-level α periodic power in visual and default mode networks predicts topiramate treatment response in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is highly heterogeneous, and patients exhibit substantial variability in their responses to preventive treatment. The dose-escalation strategy of topiramate further complicates early evaluation of therapeutic efficacy. Identifying neurobiological markers that can predict treatment response is therefore essential for individualized therapy. In this study, we constructed predictive models based on individualized periodic and aperiodic power features derived from source-reconstructed electroencephalography (EEG) to identify electrophysiological indicators associated with topi

MIND-based cortical similarity networks reveal distinct cortical alterations in motor subtypes of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a biologically heterogeneous disorder, yet conventional motor classifications may not fully reflect underlying cortical organization. We combined Morphometric INverse Divergence (MIND) networks, data-driven clustering, and explainable machine learning to investigate cortical morphometric heterogeneity in 219 patients with PD and 146 healthy controls. HYDRA clustering of regional MIND strength identified two stable cortical subgroups characterized by globally lower (Cluster 1) versus higher (Cluster 2) morphometric similarity, which only partially overlapped with tre

Expression of miR-802 in glaucoma and its diagnostic significance.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Glaucoma ranks as the second leading cause of blindness globally. The key factors leading to glaucoma are increased intraocular pressure and retinal ganglion cell apoptosis. Glaucoma is an irreversible disease that causes blindness in the eye, characterized by progressive optic nerve damage and visual field defects. The expression of miR-802 is abnormal in the plasma of glaucoma patients, but its function and mechanism remain unclear. The aim of the study is to investigate the expression of miR-802 in glaucoma and retinal ganglion cells, and the effect of miR-802 on
