BACKGROUND: Infections classified as group 1 biological carcinogens include the helminthiases caused by Schistosoma haematobium and Opisthorchis viverrini. The molecular mediators underlying the infection with these parasites and cancer remain unclear. Although carcinogenesis is a multistep process, we have postulated that these parasites release metabolites including oxysterols and estrogen-like metabolites that interact with host cell DNA. How and why the parasite produce/excrete these metabolites remain unclear. A gene encoding a CYP enzyme was identified in schistosomes and opisthorchiids.

An unexpected inflammatory cecal mass of uncertain etiology encountered during surgery for presumed appendicitis poses a dilemma to the surgeon when deciding the appropriate operative management. A retrospective study was performed to review the pathology and surgical management of this condition. Among 3224 patients who had emergency surgery for a diagnosis of acute appendicitis between January 1990 and December 1997, a group of 52 patients (1.6%) underwent either ileocecal resection or right hemicolectomy for an inflammatory cecal mass of uncertain etiology. The final pathologic diagnosis wa

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma is a type of peripheral T-cell lymphoma that is clinically characterized by high fever and generalized lymphadenopathy with or without cutaneous involvement. A 55-year-old Japanese man presented with red papular lesions on the trunk and limbs, oedema, and generalized lymphadenopathy. Histological findings in the lymph nodes showed destructive germinal centres, proliferation of arborizing postcapillary venules, and atypical medium-sized lymphocytes. The cutaneous lesions also contained atypical lymphocytes. Immunohistochemical studies indicated that the neopla
