Association Between Strabismus and Risk of Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: To evaluate the longitudinal association between strabismus and the subsequent risk of developing open-angle glaucoma (OAG), ocular hypertension (OHT), and antiglaucoma agent (AGA) initiation or OAG interventions in patients aged 65 years and older. Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2022. Patients aged 65 years or older with an ophthalmic encounter and a first recorded diagnosis of paralytic or other strabismus were compared with patients without strabismus. Individ

Promotion of neuroinflammation in select hippocampal regions in a mouse model of perimenopausal Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is characterized by age-dependent amyloid beta (Ab) aggregation and accumulation, neuroinflammation, and cognitive deficits. Significantly, there are prominent sex differences in the risk, onset, progression, and severity of AD, as well as response to therapies, with disease burden disproportionately affecting women. Although menopause onset (i.e., perimenopause) may be a critical transition stage for AD susceptibility in women, the role of early ovarian decline in initial disease pathology, particularly key neuroinflammatory

Development of Ocular Muscle Stimulation Systems and Optimization of Electrical Stimulus Parameters for Paralytic Strabismus Treatment.

Paralysis of the extraocular muscles can lead to complications such as strabismus, diplopia, and loss of stereopsis. Current surgical treatments aim to mitigate these issues by resecting the paralyzed muscle or transposing the other recti muscles to the paralyzed muscle, but they do not fully improve the patient's quality of life. Electrical stimulation shows promise, while requiring further in vivo experiments and research on various stimulation parameters. In this study, we conducted experiments on rabbits to stimulate the superior rectus (SR) muscles using different parameters and stimulati

Dose-Effect Relationship of Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Management of Strabismus: A Review.

Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) is a well-accepted non-surgical therapy for strabismus. However, its dose and technique vary widely. We reviewed published evidence on the dose effect of BTXA in treating various types of strabismus. Articles on BTXA therapy outcomes were reviewed to study doses and brands of BTXA used and their efficacy for specific types of strabismus. Researchers indicated that greater dosages may be used safely without increasing the risk of complications. The review suggested a positive dose-response relationship of BTX to success but with a higher risk of complications. No s

Combined recession-resection in the management of paralytic strabismus: simplification of the complex (a case report).

Oculomotor nerve palsy presents the greatest challenge in clinical treatment among the other cranial nerves that innervate extraocular muscle. With a complex technique of periosteal fixation using Callahan suture commonly used, a simpler and more effective technique is demanded to be proven. Here we present a case of paralytic exotropia due to oculomotor nerve palsy on a 32-year-old male along with evidence supporting our decision of surgical management. A 32-year-old male with a chief complaint of squint in both eyes was examined at an outpatient eye clinic. The patient had congenital isolate

Surgical Management of Acquired Strabismus Resulting From Ocular Trauma.

Strabismus is a disorder in which the eyes are incorrectly lined up with each other. Either eye is always or infrequently looking inward (esotropia) or outward (exotropia). A 19-year-old male patient came to the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department (OPD) with complaints of outward deviation of the left eye for five years. It was associated with a diminution of vision in the left eye for three years. The patient reported a history of a road traffic accident (RTA) five years ago before the development of deviation of the left eye. On examination, the Hirschberg test showed a corneal light reflex

TUBB3 E410K Syndrome With Childhood-Onset Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis.

CONTEXT: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a major issue worldwide, even in children. Multiple parallel hits hypothesis has been suggested as progress of NAFLD, but the mechanism of NAFLD is not completely understood. β-Tubulin is essential in mitoses, neuronal migration, and axon guidance during neuronal development. Pathogenic variants in the TUBB3 gene were shown to be associated with a wide spectrum of neurological abnormalities, but not accompanied by hepatic complications, such as NAFLD. OBJECTIVE: This work aims to examine the association between TUBB3 mutation and n

Acute-onset paralytic strabismus in toddlers is important to consider as a potential early sign of late-infantile Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a fatal lysosomal storage disease characterized by progressive demyelination within the central and peripheral nervous system. Rapid diagnosis is crucial in view of evolving therapeutic options. Strabismus has anecdotally been described as a feature in children with MLD. Our first aim was to examine the prevalence of strabismus as an early or even presenting sign of MLD in two nationwide cohorts. Second, we aimed to investigate the temporal relation between the onset of strabismus and gross motor deterioration, other early onset eye movement di

Candidate Genes in Testing Strategies for Linkage Analysis and Bioinformatic Sorting of Whole Genome Sequencing Data in Three Small Japanese Families with Idiopathic Superior Oblique Muscle Palsy.

Idiopathic superior oblique muscle palsy is a major type of paralytic, non-comitant strabismus and presents vertical and cyclo-torsional deviation of one eye against the other eye, with a large vertical fusion range and abnormal head posture such as head tilt. Genetic background is considered to play a role in its development, as patients with idiopathic superior oblique muscle palsy have varying degrees of muscle hypoplasia and, rarely, the complete absence of the muscle, that is, aplasia. In this study, whole genome sequencing was performed, and single nucleotide variations and short inserti

Acute comitant strabismus in anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome.

Ophthalmoplegia is the diagnostic hallmark of anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome. This study aimed to define the patterns of acute comitant strabismus in patients with anti-GQ1b antibody syndromes. We retrospectively analyzed the ocular motor findings in 84 patients with anti-GQ1b antibody-associated ophthalmoplegia during the acute phases. Of the 84 patients, 11 (13%) showed acute comitant strabismus. Compared to those without, patients with acute comitant strabismus frequently showed abnormal ocular motor findings that included gaze-evoked (n = 8), spontaneous (n = 4) and positional nystagmus (n =

Axonal Growth Abnormalities Underlying Ocular Cranial Nerve Disorders.

Abnormalities in cranial motor nerve development cause paralytic strabismus syndromes, collectively referred to as congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders, in which patients cannot fully move their eyes. These disorders can arise through one of two mechanisms: (a) defective motor neuron specification, usually by loss of a transcription factor necessary for brainstem patterning, or (b) axon growth and guidance abnormalities of the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves. This review focuses on our current understanding of axon guidance mechanisms in the cranial motor nerves and how disea

Dental management of a patient with Moebius syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a nonprogressive and rare congenital neuromuscular disorder involving the facial nerve and abductor nerve; it mainly manifests as facial paralysis and eye strabismus paralytic symptoms. Tissues in the oral cavity are also compromised, characterized by microstomia, micrognathia, tongue malformation, cleft lip, high arched palate or cleft palate, bifid uvula, and dental malocclusion. Therefore, dentistry plays a fundamental and crucial role in caring for these individuals. However, there is limited available data on MBS treatment, particularly regarding dent
