Time to strabismus surgery among racial and ethnic groups: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Racial variations in surgical care are known to exist. This study evaluates time to strabismus surgery among different racial groups by examining demographic and health factors. METHODS: We reviewed pediatric strabismus surgery patients' medical records at three academic institutions: Seattle Children's Hospital (2012-2022), Dean McGee Eye Institute (2012-2022), and Duke Eye Center (2013-2021). Patients with complete race classification and no previous strabismus surgeries were included. Demographic, insurance, and medical information were collected. Multivariable Cox regression a

A new oculomotor model demystifies "Remarkable Saccades".

Hering's Law of binocular eye movement control guides most oculomotor research and supports diagnosis and treatment of clinical eye misalignment (strabismus). It states that all eye movements are controlled by a unitary conjugate signal and a unitary vergence signal that sum. Recent evidence of temporally asynchronous eye rotations during vergence (Chandna et al., 2021) challenges the viability of a unitary vergence signal. Helmholtz proposed an explanation of binocular control that does not require a vergence system, that the eyes are controlled independently. Yet independent control fails to

Responsiveness and minimal important change of the Dutch Adult Strabismus-20 Questionnaire (Dutch-AS-20).

PURPOSE: The Dutch Adult Strabismus-20 questionnaire (Dutch-AS-20) is a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) developed to assess the strabismus-specific quality of life (QoL) in adult patients with strabismus in the Netherlands. This 18-item questionnaire comprises a psychosocial and visual function subscale. The aim of this prospective, multicenter, longitudinal study was to evaluate the responsiveness and determine the minimal important change (MIC) of the Dutch-AS-20 in patients undergoing strabismus surgery. METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for strabismus surgery were enrolled. The Du

Systematic review of simulation-based education in strabismus assessment and management.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus is a dynamic condition for which simulation-based training is valuable, given the variable complexity and relatively reduced exposure compared with other ophthalmic presentations. This study assessed the performance of simulation models available for medical training in the assessment and management of strabismus. METHODS: A systematic review of relevant peer-reviewed academic databases was conducted, without publication date restrictions. English-language publications evaluating the performance of simulation models for education on strabismus were included. Risk of bia

Interventions for convergence insufficiency: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Convergence insufficiency is a common binocular vision disorder in which the eyes have a strong tendency to drift outward (exophoria) with difficulty turning the eyes inward when reading or doing close work. OBJECTIVES: To assess the comparative effectiveness and relative ranking of non-surgical interventions for convergence insufficiency through a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA). SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed and three trials registers up to 20 September 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ex

Adjustable versus non-adjustable sutures for strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus, or squint, can be defined as a deviation from perfect ocular alignment and can be classified in many ways according to its aetiology and presentation. Treatment can be broadly divided into medical and surgical options, with a variety of surgical techniques being available, including the use of adjustable or non-adjustable sutures for the extraocular muscles. There exists an uncertainty as to which of these techniques produces a better surgical outcome, and an opinion that the adjustable suture technique may be of greater benefit in certain situations. OBJECTIVES: To de

Botulinum toxin for the treatment of strabismus.

BACKGROUND: The use of botulinum toxin as an investigative and treatment modality for strabismus is well reported in the medical literature. However, it is unclear how effective it is in comparison to other treatment options for strabismus. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to examine the efficacy of botulinum toxin therapy in the treatment of strabismus compared with alternative conservative or surgical treatment options. This review sought to ascertain those types of strabismus that particularly benefit from the use of botulinum toxin as a treatment option (such as small angle strabismu

A Wnt-planar polarity pathway instructs neurite branching by restricting F-actin assembly through endosomal signaling.

Spatial arrangement of neurite branching is instructed by both attractive and repulsive cues. Here we show that in C. elegans, the Wnt family of secreted glycoproteins specify neurite branching sites in the PLM mechanosensory neurons. Wnts function through MIG-1/Frizzled and the planar cell polarity protein (PCP) VANG-1/Strabismus/Vangl2 to restrict the formation of F-actin patches, which mark branching sites in nascent neurites. We find that VANG-1 promotes Wnt signaling by facilitating Frizzled endocytosis and genetically acts in a common pathway with arr-1/β-arrestin, whose mutation results

Interventions for dissociated vertical deviation.

BACKGROUND: The term "strabismus" describes misalignment of the eyes. One or both eyes may deviate inward, outward, upward, or downward. Dissociated vertical deviation (DVD) is a well-recognized type of upward drifting of one or both eyes, which can occur in children or adults. DVD often develops in the context of infantile- or childhood-onset horizontal strabismus, either esotropia (inward-turning) or exotropia (outward-turning). For some individuals, DVD remains controlled and can only be detected during clinical testing. For others, DVD becomes spontaneously "manifest" and the eye drifts up

The planar polarity gene strabismus regulates convergent extension movements in Xenopus.

The signaling mechanisms that specify, guide and coordinate cell behavior during embryonic morphogenesis are poorly understood. We report that a Xenopus homolog of the Drosophila planar cell polarity gene strabismus (stbm) participates in the regulation of convergent extension, a critical morphogenetic process required for the elongation of dorsal structures in vertebrate embryos. Overexpression of Xstbm, which is expressed broadly in early development and subsequently in the nervous system, causes severely shortened trunk structures; a similar phenotype results from inhibiting Xstbm translati

Paralytic strabismus.

In the past 12 months there have been many interesting publications on paralytic strabismus. Many investigators have reported on various imaging techniques helping both the clinician and the basic scientist better evaluate the causes and effects of paralytic strabismus on the extraocular muscle environment. Some interesting cases of neurologic and systemic associations have also been reported, including a unilateral pupil-sparing third nerve paralysis developing after the use of sildenafil citrate (Viagra; Pfizer, New York, New York). Advances in genetics are now helping us further understand

[Elevation in adduction. Relation to congenital strabismus and other types of ocular motility disorders].

This retrospective study shows the clinical data of 81 patients with elevation in adduction. The relationships between the elevation in adduction and various ocular anomalies, such as horizontal deviations, refractive errors, nystagmus, torticollis, superior oblique muscle paralysis and dissociated vertical deviation, have been studied in order to specify the clinical characteristics of this phenomenon. The age of onset of the elevation in adduction and of the dissociated vertical deviation has also been considered, and a typical temporal progression of these symptoms has been found. In this s
