Refraction in Preschool Children in Kazanlak, Bulgaria.

INTRODUCTION: The refractive state of the eye changes as the eye's axial length increases and the cornea and lens flatten. In general, eyes are hyperopic at birth, become slightly more hyperopic until the age of 7, which at this point we see a myopic shift toward plano until the eyes reach their adult dimensions, usually by about the age 16. AIM: To determine the prevalence of refractive error in preschool children aged 3 - 6 in the city of Kazanlak, Bulgaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a kindergarten based school within the city of Kazanlak, Bul-garia. O

Refractive surprise after cataract surgery secondary to smeared optics of swept-source optical coherence tomography biometer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Inaccurate biometry can lead to the wrong intraocular lens implantation and result in refractive surprise following cataract surgery. It is important to be sceptical of biometry results that do not match the refractive or clinical picture and ask for it to be repeated. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique cause of refractive surprise in a patient undergoing cataract surgery. Pre-operative refraction demonstrated hypermetropia, yet swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometry repeatedly calculated the axial length as > 35.00 mm in both eyes. The patient underwent p

p.Gly743Val Mutation in COL4A1 Is Responsible for Familial Porencephaly and Severe Hypermetropia.

COL4A1 is an essential component for basal membrane stability. Exon mutations of the COL4A1 genes are responsible for a broad spectrum of cerebral, ocular, and systemic manifestations. We describe here the phenotype of a likely pathogenic gene variant, p.Gly743Val, which is responsible for a missense mutation in the COL4A1 gene exon 30 in a three generation family with severe hypermetropia and highly penetrant porencephaly in the absence of systemic manifestations. This report highlights both the broad spectrum of COL4A1 mutations and the yield of testing the COL4A1 gene in familial ophthalmol

Do all children need a cycloplegic refraction? A comparison of Mohindra's versus cycloplegic refraction.

PURPOSE: In 1-12 years old children, we assessed correlation, regression, and agreement between spherical equivalents (SE) obtained on Mohindra's near retinoscopy (MNR) and the post cycloplegic refraction (PCRef), performed 72 h after a cycloplegic refraction (CRef) using cyclopentolate 1% drops. METHODS: In this prospective comparative study, Mohindra's near retinoscopy (MNR) was performed on 202 eyes of 101 children, from 50 cm with a streak retinoscope, in a dimly lit room, subtracting 1.25 from the trial lens used for neutralization, to obtain the final refraction. Subsequently we underto
