Ocular rigidity in eyes with experimental myopia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate ocular rigidity in experimentally induced myopic eyes compared to contralateral control eyes in young rhesus monkeys. METHODS: Eight rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were reared with monocular form-deprivation from 24 days to 150 days of age. Refraction, axial length, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured biweekly. After 150 days, ocular rigidity was assessed in both eyes via anterior chamber cannulation, in which controlled changes in anterior chamber volume were used to calculate the coefficient of ocular rigidity using Friedenwald's equation. Paired t-tests were

Rapid anterior segment and divergent corneal shape remodeling drive astigmatic compensation in the chick model.

This study investigated early temporal dynamics of ocular compensation to imposed astigmatic blur, specifically anterior segment alterations in a chick model. Fifty-four chickens were equally randomized to treatment or control groups at post-hatching day 5 (baseline, T0). Crossed-cylindrical lens (+4.00 DS/-8.00 DC) was used to induce astigmatic blur on the right eye for two weeks: With-the-rule (WTR, axis 90°) and Against-the-rule (ATR, axis 180°) astigmatism. Ocular axial dimensions and objective refraction were measured daily for the first four days (T0-T3), and at one (T7) and two weeks (T

The effectiveness of atropine 0.05% eye drops versus placebo on controlling myopia progression among school children in randomized controlled trials: a systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: Particularly in children, atropine eye drops have demonstrated encouraging results in reducing the progression of myopia. Nevertheless, there is insufficient data regarding the single dose atropine 0.05% eye drop’s ability to stop the progression of myopia, despite several studies published in various treatment types and combined comparisons of myopia progression controls. Randomized clinical trial studies measuring spherical equivalent and axial length change outcomes in school-age myopic children without any other health issues that used atropine 0.05% therapy with a placebo cont

Ocular phenotypes associated with autism and atypical neurodevelopment: Insights from electronic health records.

Atypical visual perception is often described in autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, few studies have characterized ocular conditions in ASD using basic vision metrics such as those collected in routine eye exams. The current study uses electronic health record (EHR) codes to establish ocular phenotypes across individuals with and without neurodevelopmental diagnoses, including ASD. Using a population health approach, we assessed ocular conditions (identified based on medical codes from the EHR) in N = 7518 pediatric patients across 4 groups: n = 1196 with ASD, n = 156 with Intellectual D

Challenges in Glaucoma Management in High Myopia After Refractive Surgery: A Case Report.

Managing glaucoma in highly myopic patients who have had prior refractive surgery is particularly complex. The altered corneal biomechanics in these eyes interfere with standard intraocular pressure (IOP) assessment, making conventional measurement less reliable. This report presents a 52-year-old male athlete with high myopia, who underwent radial keratotomy 25 years ago and evolved to iatrogenic ectasia on the OD (right eye), treated with intra-stromal ring implantation. Several years later, he underwent bilateral cataract surgery, followed by laser retinopexy and vitrectomy for sequential r

Effective cataract surgical coverage in adults aged 50 years and older: empirical estimates from population-based surveys in 68 countries and modelled estimates for 2000-30.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide despite treatment being very cost-effective. To stimulate efforts to address the large unmet need for affordable, good-quality cataract services, member states at the 74th World Health Assembly endorsed a global target of a 30 percentage-point increase in effective cataract surgical coverage (eCSC) by 2030. In this Article, we report on progress towards that target. METHODS: We did a secondary analysis of 233 participant-level population-based survey datasets (Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness [RAAB] surveys and other popu

Splicing variants in MYRF cause partial loss of function in the retinal pigment epithelium leading to nanophthalmos.

Improper light focus on the retina, refractive error, is primarily caused by eye size differences and is the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. C-terminal variants in the Myelin regulatory factor (MYRF) gene, a retinal pigment epithelium-derived (RPE-derived) transcription factor, lead to isolated nanophthalmos characterized by a small, though structurally sound eye. However, other MYRF loss-of-function variants cause syndromic disease. To address this discrepancy, in vitro and animal studies were performed on a pathogenic C-terminal variant dG-MYRF (p.Gly1126fs30*, c.3376-1G>A). Human RP

The Effect of Dry Eye Disease Treatment Prior to Cataract Surgery on Refractive Error Reduction.

Background/Objectives: Dry-eye disease (DED) is a disorder of the eye surface associated, among other things, with tear film instability. It can lead to abnormal biometry results, especially with respect to keratometry. DED is more common in the elderly population. Its prevalence is often underestimated. Failure to provide adequate treatment prior to biometry may result in refractive errors after cataract surgery. The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of DED on refractive predictability in cataract surgery and assess whether short, preoperative ocular-surface optimization reduce
