Cold Exposure to the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve: A Porcine Continuous Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Model Study.

BACKGROUND: Tissue exposure to cold temperatures is common in clinical practice, yet the safety of exposing the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) to cold remains unclear. This study evaluated temperature-dependent effects of cold exposure on RLN function. METHODS: A porcine continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (C-IONM) model was used to assess electromyographic (EMG) changes in 16 RLNs exposed to four temperature conditions: room temperature water, cold water, ice water, and ice block. Each exposure lasted 1 min, followed by 20 min of EMG monitoring. RESULTS: Room temperature and cold wat

A cerebrospinal fluid blood-brain barrier dysfunction score is associated with progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Blood-brain barrier permeability-related alterations are increasingly recognised as an early process in Alzheimer's disease, but their prognostic value and candidate molecular markers remain unclear. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), we derived a cerebrospinal fluid BBB permeability-related score and evaluated its association with progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease dementia using Kaplan-Meier and multivariable Cox analyses. We additionally performed two-sample Mend

Unveiling full mechanistic picture of Mo-catalysed nitrogen fixation driven by SmI2-H2O system.

Ammonia is an essential chemical that underpins modern agriculture and industry, but the direct conversion of dinitrogen to ammonia under mild conditions remains highly challenging. To this end, molybdenum nitride complexes bearing 1,3-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)benzimidazole-2-ylidene pincer ligands have been shown to catalyse ammonia formation from dinitrogen using samarium diiodide and water. However, the catalytic mechanism remains poorly understood owing to limited information on the key intermediates and the solution-state speciation of the samarium reductant. Here we show a full c

Don't Get It Twisted: A Case of Pediatric Sigmoid Volvulus Presenting as Lower Back Pain.

Sigmoid volvulus (SV) is a closed‑loop large bowel obstruction that is exceedingly uncommon in children and adolescents.Early diagnosis is essential, as progressive torsion of a redundant sigmoid colon around its mesentery leads to venous congestion, arterial compromise, and eventual bowel necrosis and perforation if untreated.Pediatric SV presents with crampy abdominal pain, distension, vomiting, and obstipation; however, low back pain has not previously been described as a primary presenting symptom. This report describes the case of a 17‑year‑old boy who presented with a chief complaint of

Successful treatment of pseudoepitheliomatous keratotic and micaceous balanitis with topical 5-fluorouracil.

Pseudoepitheliomatous keratotic and micaceous balanitis (PKMB) is a rare penile condition usually seen in elderly uncircumcised men. We report a case of PKMB in a 41-year-old circumcised male presenting with a hyperkeratotic plaque on the glans penis. Histopathology showed features of PKMB with mild cellular atypia. The patient refused surgery and was treated successfully with topical 5% 5-fluorouracil using a short-contact regimen, resulting in complete lesion clearance without recurrence. This case highlights a rare presentation and effective nonsurgical management of PKMB.

Shape-Based Partially Linear Single-Index Cox Model for Alzheimer's Disease Conversion.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the major cause of dementia in the elderly, and characterizing the time to conversion to AD is crucial in preventative treatment. While existing statistical methods have proven effective in modeling AD conversion involving various clinical, genetic, and neuroimaging predictors, limited research has explored scenarios where these predictors are shapes derived from the shape space, a nonlinear Hilbert space. In addition, the linear relationship assumption in existing methods may be violated, leading to substantial efficiency losses in real-world applications. To addre

Altered olfactory adaptation of primary olfactory cortex-hippocampus-parietal lobe in Alzheimer's disease continuum: An olfactory task fMRI study.

Olfactory adaptation, the progressive reduction of neural responses to repeated odor stimulation, is closely linked to cognitive function and is altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its evolution across biomarker-defined stages and relationship with plasma p-tau217 remain unclear. We studied 168 participants classified by plasma p-tau217: cognitively normal (p-tau217-NC, n = 37; p-tau217+NC, n = 8), subjective cognitive decline (p-tau217-SCD, n = 57; p-tau217+SCD, n = 16), and mild cognitive impairment (p-tau217-MCI, n = 40; p-tau217+MCI, n = 10). A deep learning approach to mild cognitive impairment detection from electroencephalogram signals.

UNLABELLED: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an important condition that may progress to Alzheimer disease (AD) or other types of dementia. If MCI can be detected early, timely interventions may be implemented. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on neuropsychological tests and imaging studies but have limitations in terms of efficiency and accessibility. Therefore, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based deep learning approaches represent promising developments that may offer new frameworks for the early diagnosis of MCI. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a long short-term memory (LSTM)-base

Site-Specific Protein Bioconjugation Through Cellular Incorporation of Noncanonical Amino Acids.

Traditional methods for protein bioconjugation, such as those targeting canonical amino acid residues, often suffer from a lack of site-specificity, yielding heterogeneous conjugates. Genetic code expansion (GCE) technology offers an exciting alternative, enabling site-specific incorporation of noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) bearing uniquely reactive chemical groups into recombinant proteins expressed in diverse host cells. The resulting proteins can be chemoselectively labeled at the installed ncAA residues under mild conditions to generate homogeneous, site-specific conjugates. In addition
