Twenty-five asymptomatic patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1), aged 6-21 years, underwent the following examinations: intracranial magnetic resonance testing (MRI), visual acuity testing, ophthalmoscopy, and visual field and pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs). MRI showed enlargement of one or both optic nerves in six children, with bilateral involvement in three. Experimental exposure of four volunteers to 40-50 mg/m3 of dimethylethylamine (DMEA) for eight hours caused irritation of the mucous membrane of their eyes, subjective visual disturbances (haze), and slight oedema of the corneal epithelium. The thickness of the cornea showed a slight but consistent increase in all four subjects at these exposures and in two subjects exposed to 10 mg/m3. Concentrations of 80 and 160 mg/m3 for 15 minutes caused eye irritation but no visual disturbances or corneal oedema. Occupational exposure for eight hours to about 25 mg/m3 of DMEA (with peaks above 100 mg/m3)

Two volunteers were exposed to various airborne concentrations of triethylamine. Levels of 18 mg/m3 for eight hours caused subjective visual disturbances (haze and halos) and objective corneal oedema. The effects faded within hours after the end of exposure. The visual disturbances are unpleasant and may cause accidents at work and in traffic after the end of work.

Neurological involvement occurred in every one of a series of 30 patients with an insulinoma. The episodic nature of the hypoglycaemia caused symptoms and signs to fluctuate and often led to delay in diagnosis (mean length of history was 3 years). The commonest feature at first presentation was confusion (20 instances), but as the illness evolved, coma (16 instances) and convulsions (8 instances) became more frequent. Objective weakness was found in 7 patients, with 3 examples of hemiparesis and 2 each of paraparesis and monoparesis; in all, the weakness resolved over a period of 1 hr to 3 day
