The presence of disorders of eye movements is today regarded as 'the strongest candidate for a genetically transmitted biological trait marker of schizophrenic disorders' (1). The present study is based on the experience, rather than the behaviour, of one patient in a search for a method of objectifying his visual problems. This method was found to be a simple test, which demonstrates a disturbance of fixation: while one eye accommodated on the figure without vergence, the other, vergent, eye fused with the image of the related background. The disorder had been misdiagnosed as 'exophoria' in c

INTRODUCTION: Optic neuritis is rare in childhood. Frequently (35-52% of all cases depending on the series) they have, during their clinical course, foci of demyelination leading to the clinical picture of multiple sclerosis (MS). Since 1993, the optic neuritis study group has recommended treatment with high doses of corticosteroids, since this seemed to stop progression, improve long-term results and delay the appearance of MS. The course of our patient was better than we expected.
CLINICAL CASE: A 10 year old prepubertal girl complained of progressive loss of vision and slight pain in the r

PURPOSE: To show how to progress from the deviation of the visual axis (provided the diagnosis of concomitant strabismus is certain) to the classification of the squint in one out of the different squint syndromes and consequently to adopt the appropriate therapeutic strategy.
METHOD: Every sign correlated with the deviation contributes to progress step by step to the diagnosis of a given squint syndrome. The age on onset of strabismus, either convergent or divergent, and its characteristic, intermittent or constant, allow in a first step to evaluate the potential binocularity, as well in ear

Dissociated vertical divergence (DVD) is an ocular motor disorder characterized by a slow, upward drift of 1 eye when the other eye is fixating a target. I propose that DVD is a dorsal light reflex in which asymmetrical visual input to the 2 eyes evokes a vertical divergence movement of the eyes. This primitive visuo-vestibular reflex functions as a righting response to restore vertical orientation in lower lateral-eyed animals by equalizing binocular visual input. The dorsal light reflex is suppressed in humans but can manifest as DVD when early-onset strabismus precludes normal binocular dev

PURPOSE: There are at least two possible ways to detect motion-in-depth binocular without monocular cues: the binocular disparities at different times and a mechanism that detects interocular velocity differences. The perception of interocular velocity differences (Binocular depth-from-motion [BDFM]) depends on the relative velocity of the images on the retina of the left and right eyes, and this information can be experienced by normal and some strabismic patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of esotropic patients who have BDFM but have poor stereopsis.

BACKGROUND: Ocular motility defects and loss of binocularity are well-recognised problems following retinal detachment surgery. It is presumed that scleral buckling is primarily responsible for these effects. The increasing use of vitrectomy in the management of retinal detachment might be expected to reduce the incidence of these defects.
METHOD: Two groups of patients presenting with primary uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachments were examined following a single surgical repair. The first group underwent vitrectomy (n = 17), the second group, scleral buckling/external surgical tec

The authors are registered nurses (RNs) and members of an Interdisciplinary Vision Screening Research Group investigating how best to screen children's vision, incorporating the assessment of binocular visual function. The aims of this pilot study were: to detect any visual skill problems of children in a Reception class (n = 28) using the Oyarzun Vision Screening Kit; to describe the behaviour of the children during the screening; to calculate the time taken to screen each child and to establish the interrater reliability (IRR) between the RNs and an optometrist. Thirteen of the children (46%

OBJECTIVES: Monocular blepharospasm (MBLS) is precipitated by ipsilateral ocular pathology and becomes bilateral over time. Two patients are reported with monocular visual disturbance exhibiting monocular involuntary eyelid closure (MIEC), resembling MBLS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 31-year-old female with hyperthyroidism developed monocular polyopia with left eye vision on binocular fixation followed by ipsilateral visual extinction. Monocular vision was otherwise normal. A 57-year-old male with renal failure developed monocular blindness secondary to retinal hemorrhage.

It is known that some Virtual Reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) can cause temporary deficits in binocular vision. On the other hand, the precise mechanism by which visual stress occurs is unclear. This paper is concerned with a potential source of visual stress that has not been previously considered with regard to VR systems: inappropriate vertical gaze angle. As vertical gaze angle is raised or lowered the 'effort' required of the binocular system also changes. The extent to which changes in vertical gaze angle alter the demands placed upon the vergence eye movement system was explor

Despite years of research into bipolar disorder (manic depression), its underlying pathophysiology remains elusive. It is widely acknowledged that the disorder is strongly heritable, but the genetics are complex with less than full concordance in monozygotic twins and at least four susceptibility loci identified. We propose that bipolar disorder is the result of a genetic propensity for slow interhemispheric switching mechanisms that become 'stuck' in one or the other state. Because slow switches are also 'sticky' when compared with fast switches, the clinical manifestations of bipolar disorde

Psychogenic disturbance of vision includes various abnormalities such as low vision, abnormal visual field, abnormal color sense and disturbance of binocular function, although there are no abnormalities either in the eyeball or optic nerve, and no organic changes in brain computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To clarify these abnormalities, it is necessary first to study the mechanism of visual information processing. In this report, the mechanism of visual information processing such as visual acuity, visual field, vision and attention and binocular function was studi

Infants with cerebral palsy (CP) frequently present cerebral visual impairment (CVI) often caused by damage to retrochiasmatic pathways. This is particularly true of subjects with damage to the periventricular white matter. Thirty-eight preterm infants with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) diagnosed by MRI were examined to correlate binocular visual acuity with neuroradiological findings. Binocular visual acuity was evaluated using Teller Acuity Cards and a complete ophthalmological examination was also performed. Three infants with ROP III were excluded from the sample. Behavioural responses to objects in the binocular field were examined in frogs with one regenerate and one intact optic nerve. Data were compared to those for normal controls and for frogs with vision via one intact optic nerve. During prey acquisition, frogs with regenerated optic nerves underestimated the distance to the prey on their first strike; as a consequence, the regenerate series made several attempts to achieve a successful prey capture. By contrast, normal frogs and those using only one eye struck accurately at the prey and usually captured it on the first attempt. However, frogs u

Ocular pathology can be associated with inter-ocular asymmetry of conduction latency. We describe a relatively low-cost psychophysical method of quantifying this asymmetry of delay, an 'inter-ocular temporal asynchrony' (IOTA) system. Testing of 28 visually normal young adults gave IOTA results with a mean of 0.11 ms (SD +/- 2.4 ms). These results correspond to 95% confidence limits of -4.6 ms and +4.8 ms. Inter-ocular differences in retinal illumination, induced by using monocular neutral density filters in visually normal subjects, significantly affected IOTA in accord with an imposed percep

The diagnosis of malingering and functional visual loss should be proven by specific tests-after the exclusion of differential diagnoses such as optical disturbances, amblyopia, early stages of macula and optic nerve disease and cortical lesions. Malingering and functional visual loss are based on different causes and pathogenetic mechanisms. However, they produce the same symptoms and can therefore be examined by the same methods. The strategy consists of three parts: 1) check the reproducibility of the results, 2) specific procedures: provocation of reflectory responses, deception, measureme
