Associations of hearing and visual loss with cognitive decline and dementia risk: a 25-year follow-up of the Maastricht Aging Study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss (HL) and visual loss (VL) are recently identified as promising dementia risk factors, but long-term studies with adequate control of other modifiable dementia risk factors are lacking. This 25-year follow-up study investigated the association between objectively measured HL and VL with cognitive decline and incident dementia. METHODS: 1823 participants (age 24-82 years) of the Maastricht Aging Study were assessed at baseline, 6, 12 and 25 years. Baseline HL was defined as pure-tone hearing loss ≥20 dB at frequencies of 1, 2 and 4 kHz and VL as binocular, corrected vis

A brief effective screening protocol for identifying cataract patients with binocular vision anomalies.

BACKGROUND: To compare the effectiveness of a brief binocular vision screening protocol to a comprehensive examination for detecting binocular vision anomalies before and after cataract surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive binocular vision test battery as a gold standard were administered on recruited patients before the first surgery and at the third visit after surgery on the second eye. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to illustrate the diagnostic ability of each test. In addition, a univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to further determine the cont

Binocular Visual Field Loss and Crash Risk: An eFOVID Population-Based Study.

PURPOSE: Visual field loss poses a high personal cost to those affected, significantly impacting activities of daily living, including driving. However, there is conflicting evidence on the association between visual field loss and crash risk. This study examined the association between severity and location of binocular visual field loss and motor vehicle crashes in older adults aged 50+, using linked population data over a 29-year study period. METHODS: Using a database of visual field tests obtained from ophthalmologists in Western Australia (WA) between 1990 and 2019, deficits in field se

From Cats to the Cortex: Unravelling the Hierarchical Processing System of Vision and Brain Plasticity.

The groundbreaking research conducted by neurophysiologists David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel during the late 1950s and 1960s revolutionized the field of visual neuroscience. Through single-unit recordings in the visual cortex of cats, they made several key discoveries that fundamentally changed our understanding of visual processing. Their work introduced the concept of orientation selectivity, revealing that neurons in the visual cortex are specifically tuned to line orientations, thereby illustrating how the brain constructs visual representations through edge detection. Additionally, they dis

Effect of the chromaticity of stimuli on night vision disturbances.

The perception of halos and other night vision disturbances is a common complaint in clinical practice. Such visual disturbances must be assessed in order to fully characterize each patient's visual performance, which is particularly relevant when carrying out a range of daily tasks. Visual problems are usually assessed using achromatic stimuli, yet the stimuli encountered in daily life have very different chromaticities. Hence, it is important to assess the effect of the chromaticity of visual stimuli on night vision disturbances. The aim of this work is to study the influence of the chromati

Blast injury: Impact to the cornea.

Visual disorders are common even after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or blast exposure. The cost of blast-induced vision loss in civilians, military personnel, and veterans is significant. The visual consequences of blasts associated with TBI are elusive. Active military personnel and veterans report various ocular pathologies including corneal disorders post-combat blasts. The wars and conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Ukraine have significantly increased the number of corneal and other ocular disorders among military personnel and veterans. Binocular vision, visual fields, and

Case report: Infectious mononucleosis with bilateral retinal haemorrhages under myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral optic neuritis associated with optic disc swelling is a common feature of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). However, extensive deep retinal haemorrhages have not been described in the context of MOG-associated optic neuritis. Here, we report a case of infectious mononucleosis with marked binocular peripapillary and perivascular haemorrhages as well as extensive deep retinal haemorrhages in the presence of MOGAD. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old Chinese woman presenting with subacute binocular vision reduction with no light perception was

Visual processing in genetic conditions linked to autism: A behavioral study of binocular rivalry in individuals with 16p11.2 deletions and age-matched controls.

Close phenotypic characterization of individuals with genetic conditions linked to autism provides a promising approach to navigating the heterogeneity of autism spectrum conditions. The current study investigated sensory processing in individuals with a rare genetic event that is highly penetrant for autism, 16p11.2 deletions, using a well-characterized visual paradigm, binocular rivalry, which is thought to be a non-invasive index of excitatory/inhibitory balance in the visual cortex. We characterized rivalry dynamics in 45 adolescent and adult individuals (19 individuals with 16p11.2 deleti

Stereoptic serious games as a visual rehabilitation tool for individuals with a residual amblyopia (AMBER trial): a protocol for a crossover randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is the most common developmental vision disorder in children. The initial treatment consists of refractive correction. When insufficient, occlusion therapy may further improve visual acuity. However, the challenges and compliance issues associated with occlusion therapy may result in treatment failure and residual amblyopia. Virtual reality (VR) games developed to improve visual function have shown positive preliminary results. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of these games to improve vision, attention, and motor skills in patients with residual amblyop

Amblyopic stereo vision is efficient but noisy.

People with amblyopia demonstrate a reduced ability to judge depth using stereopsis. Our understanding of this deficit is limited, as standard clinical stereo tests may not be suited to give a quantitative account of the residual stereo ability in amblyopia. In this study we used a stereo test designed specifically for that purpose. Participants identified the location of a disparity-defined odd-one-out target within a random-dot display. We tested 29 amblyopic (3 strabismic, 17 anisometropic, 9 mixed) participants and 17 control participants. We obtained stereoacuity thresholds from 59% of ou

Large depth differences between target and flankers can increase crowding: Evidence from a multi-depth plane display.

Crowding occurs when the presence of nearby features causes highly visible objects to become unrecognizable. Although crowding has implications for many everyday tasks and the tremendous amounts of research reflect its importance, surprisingly little is known about how depth affects crowding. Most available studies show that stereoscopic disparity reduces crowding, indicating that crowding may be relatively unimportant in three-dimensional environments. However, most previous studies tested only small stereoscopic differences in depth in which disparity, defocus blur, and accommodation are inc

The effect of training on sensitivity and stability of double fusion in Panum's limiting case.

Panum's limiting case is a phenomenon of monocular occlusion in binocular vision. This occurs when one object is occluded by the other object for one eye, but the two objects are both visible for the other eye. Although previous studies have found that vertical gradient of horizontal disparity and cue conflict are two important factors for double fusion, the effect of training on the sensitivity and stability of Panum's limiting case remains unknown. The current study trained 26 participants for 5 days with several of Panum's configurations (Gilliam, Frisby, and Wang series). The latency and d

Additional measures of macular function beyond visual acuity.

PURPOSE: Visual function is a complex process in which external visual stimuli are interpreted. Patients with retinal diseases and prolonged follow-up times may experience changes in their visual function that are not detected by the standard visual acuity measure, as they are a result of other alterations in visual function. With the advancement of different methods to evaluate visual function, additional measurements have become available, and further standardization suggests that some methods may be promising for use in clinical trials or routine clinical practice. The objectives of this ar

Current Developments in the Management of Amblyopia with the Use of Perceptual Learning Techniques.

Background and Objectives: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by interocular suppression of visual input, affecting visual acuity, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity, and other visual functions. Conventional treatment comprises occlusion of the sound eye. In recent years, novel therapies that deploy perceptual learning (PL) principles have been introduced. The purpose of this study is to assess the latest scientific data on this topic. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, we conducted a literature search for relevant studies published during the previous 4 years (2020-2023). R
