Double vision in Parkinson's Disease: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of diplopia in Parkinson's disease (PD) ranges from 10% to 30%. Diplopia is usually limited to specific situations such as reading and looking around, however, it can also be constant. The aim of this review, supplemented by two case studies, was to summarise current knowledge on the frequency, possible causes, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment approaches to double vision in PD patients. METHODOLOGY: An electronic search (PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science) to identify studies regarding diplopia in PD patients was performed in May 2020.

Internet-Based Hearing Assessment During COVID era in Indian Population: Practical and Safe Option.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by sustained proliferation of megakaryocytes leading to high platelet counts. ET confers risk of thrombosis and vascular complications, which are the main causes of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to describe disease features, identify thrombosis predictors, and determine prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) in ET patients. This retrospective study analyzed 156 patients with ET diagnosis based on WHO criteria between 2016 and 2021 at Hacettepe University Hospitals. Demographic, clinical, laboratory

Interventions for convergence insufficiency: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Convergence insufficiency is a common binocular vision disorder in which the eyes have a strong tendency to drift outward (exophoria) with difficulty turning the eyes inward when reading or doing close work. OBJECTIVES: To assess the comparative effectiveness and relative ranking of non-surgical interventions for convergence insufficiency through a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA). SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed and three trials registers up to 20 September 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ex

Objective Assessment of Disparity Vergence after Treatment of Symptomatic Convergence Insufficiency in Children.

SIGNIFICANCE: This first report of the use of objective measures of disparity vergence as outcome measures for symptomatic convergence insufficiency in children provides additional information that is not accessible with clinical tests. The study results also demonstrate that objective measures of vergence could be used in future randomized clinical trials of binocular vision disorders with children. PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate changes in objective measures of disparity vergence after office-based vergence/accommodative therapy (OBVAT) for convergence insufficiency in childre

Management of Duane retraction syndrome: A simplified approach.

Duane retraction (or co-contraction) syndrome is a congenital restrictive strabismus which can occur either as an isolated entity or in conjunction with other congenital anomalies and is now listed as a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder. It is characterized by co-contraction of horizontal recti on attempted adduction causing globe retraction along with variable amounts of upshoots or downshoots. It may have limited abduction or adduction or both and present as esotropic, exotropic, or orthotropic Duane. The diagnosis of this disease is usually clinical. However, recent research has pr

Latanoprost could exacerbate the progression of presbyopia.

PURPOSE: Prostaglandin analogues (PG) reduce intra-ocular pressure by enhancing uveoscleral flow at the ciliary body, which controls accommodation via the ciliary muscle. We investigated the effect of PG on accommodation and presbyopia progression in glaucoma patients. METHODS: We conducted a clinic-based, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria were bilateral phakic patients aged 40-69 years with best corrected visual acuity better than 20/30. Exclusion criteria were any disease affecting vision other than glaucoma and history of ocular surgery. Subjects with no prescription

Acute Visual Disorders-What Should the Neurologist Know?

Normal vision requires coordination of precisely controlled and coordinated eye movements and normal function of a large cortical and subcortical sensory network. Given the required precision of the system and wide anatomic distribution of the motor and sensory visual systems, vision can be disrupted by a variety of central and peripheral nervous system disorders. While many of these may be relatively benign or have no proven therapy, several may be isolated presentations or harbingers of more serious neurologic conditions. Both monocular and binocular vision losses may be isolated presentatio

Identification of a Novel COL4A4 Variant in Compound-Heterozygous State in a Patient With Alport Syndrome and Histological Findings Similar to Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).

Alport syndrome (AS) is a rare and inherited renal disorder with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. AS patients usually manifest with hematuria and progressive renal disorder also occasionally accompanied by hearing loss and ophthalmic disease. Germline variants in collagen type IV α-4 (COL4A4) gene lead to autosomal recessive Alport syndrome. In the present study, we investigated a Chinese family with Alport syndrome. The index patient is a 24-year-old Chinese woman who has been suffering from proteinuria. Renal biopsy and renal pathology were performed and found focal segmental glom

Interocular transfer of visual memory - Influence of visual impairment and abnormalities of the optic chiasm.

Due to an increased crossing of the optic nerve fibers at the optic chiasm in albinism, the visual cortex receives largely monocular input from the contralateral eye. Here we investigated whether this obstruction of binocular integration at the cortical input stage also impacts on interocular information exchange at the high processing level of visual memory. Interocular transfer (IOT) of visual memory retrieval was tested psychophysically after monocular encoding in 8 albinotic participants and 24 healthy controls. The retrieval performance (hit rate, reaction time, d') was determined when us

Stereopsis and ocular alignment in Parkinson's disease patients with and without freezing of gait symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease patients are classically described by having motor disorder symptoms. Freezing of gait is one of these motor symptoms that presents in some of these patients. Even though freezing of gait is classically considered as motor dysfunction, it is now widely accepted that deficits in other sensory systems, for example visual system, may lead or contribute to freezing of gait. The purpose of this study is to characterise some of the binocular vision functions in freezing of gait patients, non-freezing of gait Parkinson's disease patients and age-matched healthy control

Topical Review: Retinally Induced Aniseikonia.

We review retinally induced aniseikonia, an underrecognized condition resulting from common retinal conditions that has a significant effect on quality of life. Optometrists can influence the timing of surgical intervention to mitigate the damage from delaying surgical intervention in patients whose other findings do not meet a surgeon's treatment threshold.Aniseikonia due to optical differences between the eyes occurs in 1 to 3.5% of the population and can hinder the quality of binocular vision. The less noted retinally induced aniseikonia is due to mechanical distortion and displacement of t
