Practice Effects and the Lanthony D15.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have shown that subjects with congenital colour vision deficiency (CVD) can pass the saturated Farnsworth D15 (FD15) through practice. The Lanthony D15 (LD15) uses desaturated colours and is a difficult test even for patients with mild CVD. This study investigated if subjects could improve their performance on the LD15 with intentional practice. METHODS: Twenty-one male subjects (mean/SD age = 30.2/8.9 years) with congenital CVD were enrolled in the two-visit study. Their CVD status was evaluated with colour vision book screening, anomaloscope, and FD15 tests. The recr

Perception and communication of relevant colours in paintings by observers with colour vision deficiencies.

In a previous work, we empirically analysed the so-called "relevant colours" in paintings. These relevant colours describe the number of colours that stand out for an observer when glancing at a painting. On average, 19 relevant colours were identified, enabling reliable segmentation of colour images via a small palette of colours. The purpose of this study was to analyse how observers with different colour deficiencies (specifically, 11 deuteranopes, 11 protanopes, 3 deuteranomalous and 4 protanomalous observers) perceive the most representative colours in paintings. To achieve this, a set of

A Comparative Study of the Sensitivity and Specificity of the Ishihara Test With Various Displays.

OBJECTIVES: Visual colour differentiation in clinical research requires colour-competent (CC) participants. The Ishihara colour charts (ICC) have established themselves as the standard for CC screening of colour vision deficiencies (CVD). However, the extent to which the results can be compared with a presentation of the colour charts on a smartphone display (SD) is currently unknown. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the Ishihara colour deficiency test depending on the presentation mode. METHODS: Dental students (female n = 28; male n = 10; me

Chromatic visual evoked potentials: A review of physiology, methods and clinical applications.

Objective assessment of the visual system can be performed electrophysiologically using the visual evoked potential (VEP). In many clinical circumstances, this is performed using high contrast achromatic patterns or diffuse flash stimuli. These methods are clinically valuable but they may only assess a subset of possible physiological circuitries within the visual system, particularly those involved in achromatic (luminance) processing. The use of chromatic VEPs (cVEPs) in addition to standard VEPs can inform us of the function or dysfunction of chromatic pathways. The chromatic VEP has been w

Elaborate Evaluation of Farnsworth Dichotomous D-15 Panel Test Can Help Differentiate between Best Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy and Autosomal Recessive Bestrophinopathy.

INTRODUCTION: The colour vision in bestrophinopathies has not been assessed in detail so far. The aim of this study was to explore the extent to which distinct types of bestrophinopathies differ in regard to colour vision deficiencies using Farnsworth Dichotomous D-15 and Lanthony Desaturated D-15 panel tests. METHODS: Both D-15 tests were performed in 52 eyes of 26 patients with Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) and 10 eyes of 5 patients with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB). Two methods were used for a quantitative assessment of the colour vision deficiencies: moment of in

Rapid measurement and machine learning classification of colour vision deficiency.

Colour vision deficiencies (CVDs) indicate potential genetic variations and can be important biomarkers of acquired impairment in many neuro-ophthalmic diseases. However, CVDs are typically measured with tests which possess high sensitivity for detecting the presence of a CVD but do not quantify its type or severity. In this study, we introduce Foraging Interactive D-prime (FInD), a novel computer-based, generalisable, rapid, self-administered vision assessment tool and apply it to colour vision testing. This signal detection theory-based adaptive paradigm computed test stimulus intensity from

Colour perception develops throughout childhood with increased risk of deficiencies in children born prematurely.

AIM: To quantify the impact of prematurity on chromatic discrimination throughout childhood, from 2 to 15 years of age. METHODS: We recruited two cohorts of children, as part of the TrackAI Project, an international project with seven different study sites: a control group of full-term children with normal visual development and a group of children born prematurely. All children underwent a complete ophthalmological exam and an assessment of colour discrimination along the three colour axes: deutan, protan and trytan using a DIVE device with eye tracking technology. RESULTS: We enrolled a to

Limitation of standard pseudoisochromatic plates in identifying colour vision deficiencies when compared with genetic testing.

PURPOSE: The Ishihara pseudoisochromatic (PIC) plate test is the most used test for identifying red-green colour-deficient individuals, but it is not known how the Ishihara results compare with that of genetics testing. Here, the outcome of genotype analysis of OPN1LW and OPN1MW was compared with that of the Ishihara (24-plate ed., 1964) and the Hardy-Rand-Rittler (4th ed. 2002) PIC plate tests. METHODS: Healthy participants with normal habitual visual acuity (n = 454, 16-24 years; 193 males; logMAR ≤ 0.00) gave saliva samples for opsin gene analysis and performed the two PIC plate tests as p

True colours or red herrings?: colour maps for finite-element analysis in palaeontological studies to enhance interpretation and accessibility.

Accessibility is a key aspect for the presentation of research data. In palaeontology, new data is routinely obtained with computational techniques, such as finite-element analysis (FEA). FEA is used to calculate stress and deformation in objects when subjected to external forces. Results are displayed using contour plots in which colour information is used to convey the underlying biomechanical data. The Rainbow colour map is nearly exclusively used for these contour plots in palaeontological studies. However, numerous studies in other disciplines have shown the Rainbow map to be problematic

The misuse of colour in science communication.

The accurate representation of data is essential in science communication. However, colour maps that visually distort data through uneven colour gradients or are unreadable to those with colour-vision deficiency remain prevalent in science. These include, but are not limited to, rainbow-like and red-green colour maps. Here, we present a simple guide for the scientific use of colour. We show how scientifically derived colour maps report true data variations, reduce complexity, and are accessible for people with colour-vision deficiencies. We highlight ways for the scientific community to identi

Testing a Popular Smartphone Application for Colour Vision Assessment in Healthy Volunteer Subjects.

We aimed to compare the Ishihara pseudoisochromatic colour vision test with a colour vision test from a popular smartphone application (EyeHandBook [EHB]) using digital image processing to simulate colour vision deficiencies. Three digital versions of the Ishihara and EHB slides were created: full colour; 32 bit- greyscale (removing all colour information); and blue channel (to simulate red-green colour vision deficiencies). Twenty healthy volunteers were shown each colour-edited plate. The answers they reported were compared with what would be expected for that colour-simulation scenario base

Individualised Halo-Free Gradient-Domain Colour Image Daltonisation.

Daltonisation refers to the recolouring of images such that details normally lost by colour vision deficient observers become visible. This comes at the cost of introducing artificial colours. In a previous work, we presented a gradient-domain colour image daltonisation method that outperformed previously known methods both in behavioural and psychometric experiments. In the present paper, we improve the method by (i) finding a good first estimate of the daltonised image, thus reducing the computational time significantly, and (ii) introducing local linear anisotropic diffusion, thus effective

Review of the main colour vision clinical assessment tests.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital colour vision deficiencies affect 8% of the male and 0.5% of the female population. The study of colour vision is a complex process due to several factors: the psychophysics of vision itself, the difficulty to establish mathematical models for its analysis, the vague correlation of results between different tests, and the influence of external factors such as lighting, the tests condition, or the experience of the examiner and the patient. In the present document, a simplified review was carried out on the main colour vision tests available in clinical practice. MATER

[Visual Acuity, Contrast Sensitivity, Colour Vision: Thoughts on Psychophysical Exams in Neuro-ophthalmology].

Despite many technical advances, psychophysical testing of perceptual performance continues to play an important role in ophthalmic diagnostics, including neuro-ophthalmology. The present article considers methodological and clinical aspects of examining visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and colour vision. In contrast to acuity, contrast sensitivity is at present rarely tested, despite often being a more sensitive marker of disease. In general, standardised procedures have the advantage of a high degree of comparability. However, tests that deviate from the standard might be better adapted
