Pediatric and Adult Craniopharyngioma: A 37-Year Experience at a National Referral Center.

INTRODUCTION: Craniopharyngioma (CP) is a rare, recurrent central nervous system tumor with significant hormonal, visual, and metabolic sequelae. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective cohort study analyzes 37 years of experience managing pediatric and adult CP patients at a specialized referral center in Chile, stratified by age at onset. Clinical, biochemical, imaging, and neurosurgical data from 1986 to 2023 were reviewed. RESULTS: A total of 87 patients (1-68 years) were included, with 65 (75%) presenting in childhood (≤ 18 years) and 22 (25%) in adulthood. Mean follow-up was 9.3 years (IQR 3.7

Investigating the Complexity of Multidimensional Symptom Experiences in Patients With Cancer: Systematic Review of the Network Analysis Approach.

BACKGROUND: Advances in therapies have significantly improved the outcomes of patients with cancer. However, multidimensional symptoms negatively impact patients' quality of life. Traditional symptom analysis methods fail to capture the dynamic and interactive nature of these symptoms, limiting progress in supportive care. Network analysis (NA) is a promising method to evaluate complex medical situations. OBJECTIVE: We performed a systematic review to explore NA's contribution to understanding the complexity of symptom experiences in patients with cancer. METHODS: The research question was a

Surgical management and visual outcomes of optic-pathway cavernous malformations: A comprehensive literature review of 80 reported cases (1979 - 2025).

OBJECTIVE: Cavernous malformations (CMs) of the optic chiasm, optic tract, and hypothalamus are exceedingly rare. Most patients present with acute or progressive visual loss, and surgery aims to maximize visual recovery while minimizing neural manipulation. We describe an updated review of all reported operated optic-pathway cavernomas to clarify surgical strategies and visual outcomes. METHODOLOGY: PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar were searched with the terms optic pathway cavernoma, optic chiasm cavernoma, hypothalamic cavernoma, and surgical outcomes. Eighty published cases (1979 - May

Association between RS3763040 polymorphism of the AQP4 and idiopathic intracranial hypertension in a Spanish Caucasian population.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition of increased intracranial pressure of unknown aetiology. Principal symptoms are headache, visual disturbances, and obesity, together with elevated intracranial pressure. Unspecified MRI, despite normal ventricle size, suggests alterations in the water flux cellular mediated by the brain water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4). The association among IIH, cerebral spinal fluid malfunction, reabsorption, and functional or regulatory modifications of AQP4 is a hypothesis not confirmed. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 72 Spa

Observation of the far peripheral retina of normal eyes by ultra-wide field fluorescein angiography.

PURPOSE: The appearance of the far peripheral retina in normal eyes was observed using an Optos ultra-wide field fluorescein angiography imaging system. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of ultra-wide field pseudocolor and angiography images obtained using the Optos 200Tx. Four different non-vascular and six vascular-associated fluorescence features in far peripheral retina were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 166 eyes in 83 patients met the inclusion criteria. The mean patient age was 40.78 ± 10.94 years (range: 20-65 years) with a female-to-male ratio of 0.98. Slight cataract were present in

[Neuro-ophthalmology: the eye as a window to the brain].

Neuro-ophthalmology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders related to the neurological system rather than the globe itself. Being a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology, it requires specialized training and expertise in diseases of the eye, brain, nerves and muscles. Commonly encountered pathologies in neuro-ophthalmology include: optic neuropathies (such as optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy), visual field loss (transient, constant, unexplained), transient visual loss, unspecified visual disturbances, diplopia, abnormal eye movements, thyroid eye dise

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: a review of its effects on intraocular pressure.

The increase in serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission is considered to be one of the most efficacious medical approach to depression and its related disorders. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) represent the most widely antidepressive drugs utilized in the medical treatment of depressed patients. Currently available SSRIs include fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram and escitalopram. The primary SSRIs pharmacological action's mechanism consists in the presynaptic inhibition on the serotonin reuptake, with an increased availability of this amine into the sy

Presentation of childhood CNS tumours: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suspicion of a CNS tumour is classically raised by symptoms of raised intracranial pressure, focal deficits (including seizures), or papilloedema. Development of guidelines is needed for the identification and referral of children who might have a CNS tumour. We did a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to identify the clinical presentation of childhood CNS tumours to provide evidence to support the development of guidelines to assist with the identification and referral for imaging of children who might have a central nervous system tumour. METHODS: Medline, Embase, an

Disorganized search on cancellation is not a consequence of neglect.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have suggested that in stroke patients, spatial inattention on the cancellation test is closely related to disorganized visual search. However, methods to assess spatial aspects of search organization on cancellation tests have not been well developed. In this study the authors design and evaluate new methods to quantify strategies of spatial exploration on the cancellation test in stroke patients who showed a broad range of spatial attentional abilities, and test whether disorganization and inattention are related. METHODS: Twenty stroke patients were videotaped whil

Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease: a review and phenomenological survey.

OBJECTIVES: Between 8% and 40% of patients with Parkinson's disease undergoing long term treatment will have visual hallucinations during the course of their illness. There were two main objectives: firstly, to review the literature on Parkinson's disease and summarise those factors most often associated with hallucinations; secondly, to carry out a clinical comparison of ambulant patients with Parkinson's disease with and without visual hallucinations, and provide a detailed phenomenological analysis of the hallucinations. METHODS: A systematic literature search using standard electronic dat

Optic aphasia: a process of interaction between vision and language.

A neurological syndrome, called in the literature ether optic aphasia or visual anomia, is defined in principle as the inability to name visually presented objects, together with the preservation of both the ability to identify them by sight correctly and to name them when they are presented in another sensory modality. This syndrome was first described by Freund in 1889, but since then its existence has been continually questioned. When it is accepted, the most common interpretation of it is in terms of an anatomical visuo-verbal disconnection. However, the precise level of the psychological
