Polysulfides play an important role in regulating many physiological processes, making their study relevant in health and disease. This study aims to improve their evaluation method by determining alkaline-labile sulfane sulfur (ALSS) and to test it on various biological samples, as well as on models of hyperhomocysteinemia and oxidative/reductive stress. The ALSS assay is based on the photometric determination of H2S, which is generated from polysulfides under alkaline conditions. The limit of quantitative detection was 3.3 nmol, interday reproducibility was 5.7% (blood plasma), and the yield

Post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury are highly comorbid and share overlapping cognitive and affective symptoms linked to frontolimbic circuitry. However, it remains unclear whether symptom severity reflects shared neural mechanisms across diagnoses or whether mild traumatic brain injury modifies these relationships. We used functional MRI to examine transdiagnostic associations between brain activity, functional connectivity and symptom burden in 109 combat veterans. Because symptom measures were highly intercorrelated, analyses were interpreted within a symptom-dime

A 15-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was presented for examination due to chronic corneal opacity in the right eye, which had been noted for several years. An ophthalmic evaluation revealed dense, irregular corneal opacity; an absence of the direct pupillary light reflex; and a positive dazzle reflex. Fluorescein staining was negative and cytology of a corneal conjunctival swab identified nucleated squamous epithelial cells, but no inflammatory cells. Slit-lamp examination failed to visualize intraocular structure, and the lesion was deemed to be chronic and irreversible. An obstacle-avoidance t

INTRODUCTION: The cardinal symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are highly nonspecific, and are shared with other prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders. Moreover, rates of psychopathological co-occurrence are high with ADHD. Given symptom non-specificity may confound differential diagnosis of ADHD, this study assessed the effect of elevated emotional dysfunction on endorsement of current and childhood ADHD symptoms.
METHOD: Study sample included 527 adults referred for neuropsychological evaluation of suspected or known ADHD. The Clinical Assessment of Attention Deficit-

This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of vision screening of children in Greenland, focusing on the efficacy of the current programme for six-year-old schoolchildren, the prevalence of vision impairment, amblyopia and refractive errors among six- and four-year-old children and the evaluation of a new screening method for preschool children. Additionally, it underscores the challenges of delivering consistent healthcare services in Greenland due to its vast and sparsely populated areas and the lack of prior research on vision health in Greenlandic children. The thesis involved three pop

Camurati-Engelmann Disease (CED) is a rare sclerosing bone dysplasia in which skull-base hyperostosis may result in neuro-ophthalmic complications. We report a 21-year-old woman with presumed CED and known bilateral choroidal osteomas who presented with bilateral optic nerve swelling. Neuroimaging demonstrated diffuse cranial hyperostosis with optic canal narrowing but no definitive optic nerve compression or venous sinus thrombosis. Lumbar puncture confirmed raised intracranial pressure with an opening pressure of 33 cm H₂O. Optical coherence tomography revealed right eye subretinal fluid wit

Background/Objectives: Visual dysfunction is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's Disease (PD), as evidenced by deficits in color vision (CV) and binocular vision (BV). Computerized CV tests, such as the Cambridge Color Test (CCT), are underutilized in this patient population despite the known limitations of common CV tests. Methods: In total, 19 PD and 12 control participants underwent a comprehensive eye exam, including ocular motility testing and the CCT, utilizing thresholds obtained along 12 contrast vectors to fit a discrimination ellipse. Findings were compared across groups, and t

BACKGROUND: Pediatric chronic pancreatitis (CP) is associated with significant morbidity and nutritional challenges, yet the impact of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) on clinical and nutritional outcomes in children remains incompletely defined. This study aimed to evaluate age associated outcomes following ERCP in children.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 154 pediatric patients who underwent 360 ERCP procedures between 2019 and 2024 with age-stratified analyses. The primary outcomes included the rate of pre-discharge pain relief, defined as a disch

Acquired oculomotor nerve palsy is most commonly due to microvascular ischaemia, while symptomatic non-aneurysmal neurovascular compression remains exceedingly rare and often underdiagnosed. We report the case of a woman with a 2-year history of left-sided ptosis and binocular horizontal diplopia. Imaging revealed a neurovascular conflict secondary to a fetal-type posterior communicating artery. Conservative treatments failed, and the patient underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) via a left pterional approach. Decompression was achieved using a dural sling affixed to the internal carotid

BackgroundDifferentiating individuals with mild cognitive impairment who convert to dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (MCI-C) from those who do not convert (MCI-NC) is increasingly important. Functional connectivity (FC) derived from resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) has been investigated as a potential biomarker. However, improved data analysis strategies are needed. One underexplored approach is pairwise voxel-to-voxel analysis.ObjectiveTo describe differences in FC between amyloid positive MCI-C and MCI-NC using a whole-cortex voxel-to-voxel pairwise approach.MethodsBaseline rs-fMRI

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a diverse group of conditions characterized by multiple joint contractures. Although individually rare, these disorders are estimated to affect 1 in 3000-5000 live births. Their common pathophysiological mechanism is fetal akinesia, a sustained reduction of fetal movement that may arise from intrinsic disturbances-such as central nervous system malformations, motor neuronopathies, neuropathies, neuromuscular junction defects, congenital myopathies, muscular dystrophies, or metabolic diseases-or from extrinsic factors including uterine constraint, mat

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an immune-mediated neuropathy that may cause persistent disability despite immunoglobulin treatment. Ion channel dysfunction has been demonstrated in CIDP, but no therapies specifically target this mechanism. We investigated whether fampridine improves clinical function and electrophysiological measures in CIDP patients with residual symptoms.
METHODS: In this two-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, patients with CIDP receiving stable subcutaneous or intravenous immunoglobulin we

Japanese spotted fever (JSF) is a tick-borne rickettsial infection caused by Rickettsia japonica. Although most cases occur sporadically, familial clusters may arise when multiple individuals are exposed to infected ticks in the same environment. In this report, we describe two sequential cases of JSF, representing, to our knowledge, the first reported parent-child familial cluster. Case 1 involved a 61‑year‑old man who developed fever, rash, and multiple eschars one day after a tick bite. Laboratory testing revealed thrombocytopenia and elevated inflammatory markers. Intravenous minocycline,

Background/Objectives: Unilateral Spatial Neglect (USN) is a disabling attentional syndrome occurring after cortical or subcortical stroke, including thalamic lesions. EEG-based neurofeedback (EEG-NF) may support cortical self-regulation, but evidence in spatial neglect remains limited. This case report describes the clinical, neuropsychological, functional, and electrophysiological (quantitative EEG, qEEG) evolution of a patient with USN after a right thalamic hemorrhagic stroke who underwent multidisciplinary rehabilitation including EEG-NF. Methods: A 70-year-old patient underwent a 3-week

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible visual loss in the elderly. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy has improved the visual prognosis of exudative AMD, a considerable proportion of patients still develop severe vision loss. However, real-world data on the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD remain limited. This study investigates the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD.
METHODS: This nationwide, popu

We report the case of a 60-year-old male who developed parkinsonism following approximately 32 years of methamphetamine (MA) use. The patient had used MA since age 18. He initially noted a mild resting tremor in his right upper limb around age 50, which remained relatively stable for nearly a decade. However, at age 59, gait disturbances emerged and progressed over the following six months. While brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed no remarkable findings, 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy demonstrated a reduction in the heart-to-mediastinum ratio. Additional

MEGF10 biallelic variants cause early-onset myopathy, areflexia, respiratory distress and dysphagia (EMARDD), congenital myopathies with cores, and later-onset myopathies with respiratory failure. As MEGF10 plays a key role in satellite cells proliferation and differentiation, these disorders are considered primary Satellite Cell-opathies. We present clinical, genetic, and laboratory findings from three patients with MEGF10-related myopathy from two families: a 6-year-old boy with EMARDD, and two siblings with a milder myopathy with respiratory involvement. Patient 1, male, showed decreased fe

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Facial asymmetry often results from discrepancies between the maxilla and mandible. As the maxilla contributes to the orbital floor and lateral wall, variations in its inclination may affect orbital morphology and volumetric symmetry. This study investigated the relationship between orbital volume (OV) and vertical maxillary asymmetry (VMA) and evaluated influencing factors such as sex, age, height, and skeletal pattern.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans of 94 participants (47 men and 47 women) were analyzed. OV, right-left OV discrepancy (DOV), ma
