Slow Binocular Reading in Amblyopic Children Is a Fellow Eye Deficit.

SIGNIFICANCE: Amblyopic children read 25% slower than their peers during binocular silent reading. PURPOSE: We compared binocular reading to fellow eye reading to determine whether slow reading in amblyopic children is due to binocular inhibition; that is, the amblyopic eye is interfering during binocular reading. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 38 children with amblyopia and 36 age-similar control children who completed grades 1 to 6 were enrolled. Children silently read grade-appropriate paragraphs during binocular reading and fellow eye reading while wearing ReadAlyzer eye-tracking g

Case Report: Papilledema Secondary to Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis after Severe COVID-19 Infection.

SIGNIFICANCE: This case highlights ocular adverse effects of a rare, potentially life-threatening complication from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Papilledema can occur because of increased intracranial pressure caused by cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, the incidence of which may be more likely in patients with a history of COVID-19 because of an induced hypercoagulable state. PURPOSE: This case report presents a case of papilledema secondary to cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in a patient with a recent history of severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19). CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old man

What you need to know about assessing a patient with diplopia.

Diplopia occurs when two images are subjectively seen of a single object. It has a variety of causes, which range in severity from benign to sight or life threatening if left untreated. Clinical assessment of diplopia includes taking a comprehensive history to delineate the exact type of visual disturbance experienced by the patient and examination to pinpoint the aetiology, which is crucial for further management. This article discusses the causes of diplopia, along with risk factors and other associated symptoms, to facilitate diagnosis and management. Efficient and effective diagnosis is im

Vision impairment is common in non-hospitalised patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vision-related problems can be part of longstanding sequelae after COVID-19 and hamper the return to work and daily activities. Knowledge about symptoms, visual, and oculomotor dysfunctions is however scarce, particularly for non-hospitalised patients. Clinically applicable tools are needed as support in the assessment and determination of intervention needs. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate vision-related symptoms, assess visual and oculomotor function, and to test the clinical assessment of saccadic eye movements and sensitivity to visual motion in n

Factors associated with visual acuity improvement with a binocular digital therapeutic for amblyopia.

We combined data from 121 amblyopic children enrolled in two prospective open-label pilot studies and a randomized trial of a binocular digital therapeutic to identify factors associated with positive response to amblyopia treatment. Visual acuity improved ≥1 line in 81% of participants after 12 weeks of therapy. Treatment response was not found to be associated with age, severity of amblyopia, or prior treatment status. Although these findings may suggest broad efficacy for this treatment approach, further investigation in larger cohorts is needed to identify factors associated with treatment

The Relationship between Anxiety, Visual Function, and Symptomatology in University Students.

Mental health concerns have emerged at the university level, with the psychological well-being of students being increasingly affected. This cross-sectional study investigated the proportion of university students having anxiety, and its effects on their visual function and symptomatology. We included 41 students (26.1 ± 4.8 years), and their visual function was assessed through several tests to produce a general visual performance index (VPI). The visual symptomatology was studied using the Conlon Visual Discomfort Survey and the Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire. The students were classi

State-dependent alterations of implicit emotional dominance during binocular rivalry in subthreshold depression.

Binocular rivalry, a visual perception phenomenon where two or more percepts alternate every few seconds when distinct stimuli are presented to the two eyes, has been reported as a biomarker in several psychiatric disorders. It is unclear whether abnormalities of binocular rivalry in depression could occur when emotional rivaling stimuli are used, and if so, whether an emotional binocular rivalry test could provide a trait-dependent or state-dependent biomarker. In the current study, 34 individuals with subthreshold depression and 31 non-depressed individuals performed a binocular rivalry task

Observation of the effect of posterior scleral reinforcement combined with orthokeratology and 0.01% atropine in the treatment of congenital myopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Myopia has recently emerged as a significant threat to global public health. The high and pathological myopia in children and adolescents could result in irreversible damage to eye tissues and severe impairment of visual function without timely control. Posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) can effectively control the progression of high myopia by limiting posterior scleral expansion, improving retrobulbar vascular perfusion, thereby stabilizing the axial length and refraction of the eye. Moreover, orthokeratology and low concentrations of atropine are also effective in slowing myo

Optical-Quality Assessment of a Miniaturized Intraocular Telescope.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes severe vision impairments, including blindness. An option to improve vision in AMD patients is through intraocular lenses and optics. Among others, implantable miniaturized telescopes, which direct light to healthy lateral regions of the retina, can be highly effective in improving vision in AMD patients. Yet, the quality of the restored vision might be sensitive to the optical transmission and aberrations of the telescope. To shed light on these points, we studied the in vitro optical performance of an implantable miniaturized telescope, namely, t
