Dual Mechanisms of Impaired Visual Processing in Glaucoma: Insights From Resting-State and Task-Related EEG.

PURPOSE: To examine both resting-state and task-related electroencephalography (EEG) changes associated with visual processing in glaucoma. METHODS: Thirty glaucoma patients (mean age, 63 ± 8.26 years; visual field mean deviation, -15.41 ± 6.34 dB) and 28 age-matched controls (62.86 ± 9.19 years) underwent resting-state EEG for 3 minutes under eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. Alpha suppression, calculated as the difference between conditions, was assessed as a measure of cognitive state transition capacity. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded using a 64-channel EEG system durin

Abemaciclib and lenalidomide presenting with central retinal artery occlusion in a patient with breast cancer and multiple myeloma: a possible treatment-related association.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a vision-threatening vascular emergency that often causes permanent monocular visual loss. We report a woman in her late seventies with metastatic hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer and multiple myeloma who developed sudden, painless right monocular vision loss while receiving long-term abemaciclib and lenalidomide. Funduscopic examination showed diffuse retinal whitening, attenuated retinal arterioles and a cherry-red spot, confirming CRAO. She presented approximately 20 hours after symptom onset, outside the window for hyperacute

Retinal Embolization after Carotid Artery Stenting in a Monocular Patient: Clinical and Ethical Implications.

Severe carotid artery narrowing is a well-recognized cause of ischemic stroke, and carotid artery stenting (CAS) is frequently used to restore blood flow and prevent recurrence. Although embolic protection devices are designed to reduce the risk of distal embolization, ocular complications can still occur. When treating patients with vision in only one eye, any compromise in ocular circulation can have devastating consequences. A 63-year-old male presented with an acute ischemic stroke caused by severe narrowing of the Right internal carotid artery. He underwent CAS. Shortly after the procedur

"Best Pick and Hold" with "Wrap and Roll" technique for extreme subluxated crystalline lens.

BACKGROUND: A severely subluxated crystalline lens refers to significant displacement of the eye's natural lens from its normal position, often due to zonular weakness or rupture.[1] This condition can result from trauma, connective tissue disorders like Marfan syndrome, or advanced pseudoexfoliation.[2,3] Visual symptoms include blurred vision, monocular diplopia, and glare. On examination, lens edge may be visible within the pupil, and phacodonesis (lens wobbling) may be noted. Severe subluxation increases the risk of complications such as angle-closure glaucoma, lens-induced uveitis, or ret

Physics-Guided Learning for Monocular Visual Object Localization in Indoor Environments.

Accurate object localization is essential for enabling autonomous operation of indoor robotic systems. As a low-cost, compact, and flexibly deployable solution, monocular visual object localization (MVOL) is highly applicable to lightweight embedded robotic platforms. However, conventional data-driven MVOL methods suffer from inherent limitations of 2D-to-3D ill-posed mapping, which is caused by the incapability of constraining the spatial physical logic of real scenes, resulting in severe depth ambiguity, inaccurate scale estimation, and physically unreasonable predictions. To address these i

Intelligent Visual Prioritization for Retinal Prostheses via Context-Aware Object Ranking and Depth-Aware Phosphene Generation.

Images from high-resolution cameras are mapped onto a sparse pattern of low spatial resolution and intensity in the retina, which limits visual perception in retinal prosthetic vision. When the entire scene is converted into phosphenes, it may allow unnecessary background information to be retained and may cause visual clutter, which may make it hard for prosthetic vision users to interpret the scene. In order to tackle this issue, this paper presents a context-, depth-, and user-preference-aware method for selecting the objects of interest in the generation of phosphene images. The proposed m

Saccadic Reaction Times and Computational Modelling Reveal Heterogeneous Binocular Summation in Glaucomatous Visual Fields.

Binocular summation enhances visual performance. This enhancement may be disrupted in visual conditions that introduce interocular asymmetries, e.g., glaucoma. Reaction times provide a direct index of visual processing efficiency. However, they have not been studied systematically under binocular conditions in glaucoma. This investigation quantified monocular and binocular saccadic reaction times (RTs) across the visual field using eye-movement perimetry (EMP), compared binocular summation between healthy and glaucoma participants and evaluated correspondence with computational models. Saccadi

Abnormal Binocular Rivalry Dynamics in Amblyopia: A Potential Diagnostic Marker.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by monocular deficits and interocular suppression. Binocular rivalry, where perception alternates between dissimilar images, is a powerful tool to probe this suppression. However, the dynamics of sustained binocular rivalry remain poorly characterized in amblyopia. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize these dynamics in individuals with amblyopia compared to visually-normal controls. METHODS: Eleven adults with amblyopia and eight controls continuously reported their perception during a binocular rivalry task through

Vision screening of Greenlandic children evaluating efficacy, coverage and future directions.

This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of vision screening of children in Greenland, focusing on the efficacy of the current programme for six-year-old schoolchildren, the prevalence of vision impairment, amblyopia and refractive errors among six- and four-year-old children and the evaluation of a new screening method for preschool children. Additionally, it underscores the challenges of delivering consistent healthcare services in Greenland due to its vast and sparsely populated areas and the lack of prior research on vision health in Greenlandic children. The thesis involved three pop

A split decision based on vision: an empirical approach to classify short-distance sprinters with a vision impairment.

Athletes with vision impairment (VI) competing in track athletics typically compete in one of three 'classes' based on the severity of their VI. The creation of these classes, however, was arbitrary and not based on evidence. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between monocular visual acuity (VA) and sprinting performance in athletes with a VI to establish the optimal cut-off point(s) between competition classes. Historical data including VA and sprinting performance were collected through the International Paralympic Committee's Sport Data Management System. Pearson cor
